Title: Luke and Mary Madden nee Jenkins
Post by: trenaf on Saturday 23 February 13 01:34 GMT (UK)
I have been trying to trace my Great Grandfather Thomas Patrick Madden and his parents Luke Madden and Mary Madden nee Jenkins. I have finally found Luke and Mary marriage certificate and I am waiting for it to be sent out. I have searched all the census records from 1881 with no luck of finding them. Thomas died in 1926 in Australia and was believed to be 45 years old however I think he may have been born 1878 rather than 1881 as first thought. I have no other family for  Thomas. I have no idea when his parents died. I believe Thomas went AWOL when he arrived in England during the war, possibly to see his parents. Luke and Mary were married in West Derby and stories from my grandmother Thomas was born in Liverpool. If anyone can help with this family I would sincerely appreciate it.

www.liverpoolhistoryprojects.co.uk  Roman Catholic Marriages show that
1878  ref No 708 St James church,Bootle,
Luke Madden married Mary Ann Jenkins ....so although you thought that they married in West Derby - they in fact married in Bootle ...6 miles from West Derby - in this case West Derby was the registration office ..
hope this helps

1912 death for Luke Madden aged 72   N Preston NP/15/77  could this be your Luke ? ..was he born 1850/51 ...do you have him in 1881 census stating his age ?

I have found in Bootle (where they married ) in 6 Tudor Court
Luke Madden aged 33 b Ireland
Mary Ann Madden aged 18 b england
no children - with the McCourt family and it says Luke is son in law - this would make Mary Ann a McCourt UNLESS Marys mother had re-married
can some kind soul have a look in 1881 census for Luke and Mary Ann OTHER than this transcription ??...this may be the wrong Luke /Mary Ann - but because they are  in Bootle , I think it could be our Luke /Mary Ann
allan...ps ...this record would have meant Mary Ann was 15 when she married Luke in 1878 and he would have been 30 ....cradle snatcher ...lol

Thank you so much everyone who replied. I certainly can't thank you enough for helping. I have Thomas death certificate for 1926 Victoria Australia and his military records which state his mothers maiden name was Jenkins. You have all  given me some brilliant information here. Hopefully now I can move forward with this side of my family.

Thanks Down Under ....I wasn`t sure if we had the right Luke and Mary Ann - you confirmed we had .
So Luke  died between 1891 - 1901 ? ....Ships Fireman = a Stoker ...I wonder if he died at sea ?
no sign of his death on freebmd 1891 -1901

I have researched this family all day and found that Rebecca McCourt's maiden name was Watts. I am still no closer to finding the Jenkins surname apart from her children, maybe they were illegitimate? I haven't found Luke Madden's death cert either perhaps he did die at sea?  :)

I don't know whether I am off the track but how about this? Why couldn't Rebecca have been married previously and Ellen and Mary be by the first husband. Have I lost the plot?
RG9 piece 2641 folio 48 page 30

William Jenkinson 24 dock labourer born Claythorpe Westmoreland
Rebecca 24 wife born Ilfracombe Devon
Eleanor dau age 2 born Birkenhead Cheshire

Rebecca's birth place correct as is Eleanor's (Ellen?) Jenkinson wrong in this census or shortened to Jenkins in following censuses.

I have just taken a look on ancestry to see if there are any public trees on there.  There are but I think they have gone back down the wrong line. This is their 1851 census
HO107/1858/649/29
Cattistock Dorset.
John Watts 58 born Dorset
Elizabeth Watts 51
Mary Ann Watts 19
Charles Watts 17
Henry Watts 15
Thomas Watts 8

There is no mention of Rebecca's first marriage either.
They also have John Watts born Dorset marrying an Elizabeth Dunford in Dorset on 1 July 1816.
Needs to be examined closely.

Hi, I hope that this info is helpful for your search. I am Rebecca McCourt's (nee Watts 1st married name Jenkins), great x 3 grand daughter. Rebecca was born in August 1834 to William and Mary Ann Watts in Berrynarbour, Ilfracombe, Devon. She was one of 6 children. William died in 1839 and Mary Ann in 1844, both in Devon. William left a will providing for his family, a house and orchard. I don't know what happened but Rebecca and her brother Joseph lived as house servants to a John Watts in 1851 on West Hagginton Farm, Ilfracombe. In 1858 Rebecca married William Jenkins (aka Jenkinson), in Llandaff, Glamorganshire. William was born in Westmorland in 1832 to James Jenkinson and Margaret (nee Swainson). William was an agricultural labourer then Husbandman (1851 census). On the 1861 census they were living in Birkenhead and had one daughter Ellen, (aka Eleanor) born in 1859. William was a dock labourer. They had another daughter in c1863, Mary Ann Jenkins. William died in 1864. Rebecca married Peter McCourt in 1867 and had 4 children, Catherine b 1868;William& James b 1870; and Emily b1874. Mary Ann married Luke Madden and had a son Thomas. Luke was born in Ireland c 1848.
Rebecca lived in Bootle at the time of her death in 1923, she lived with her daughter Emily, married name Summers) and her family. Thanks for posting and if by any chance you have any more info please let me know. I know it's a long shot but do you have any early photos? I would love to see any photos of Rebecca and her family, if you do please post them, that would be great. As for my line back to William and Rebecca, their other daughter Ellen married my great x2 grandfather Michael Joseph Bracken, in 1877 in Liverpool and had 7 children.
