Going by the image, I would go with Turner.

Hi Claire,
I think it is him but wanted to make sure that I was reading the name correctly. I first read the occupation as Farmer and when I looked at the census Turner so I wanted to make sure I was not just trying to make it all fit to suit my family. Also the census is Crewe which is where the John in the letter lived!
Thank you

He probably worked at the Crewe works of the London and North Western Railway Co. :)

Thanks Pels.
Geoff, that is interesting. I happened to go through Crewe yesterday on my way back from a research trip to Liverpool. Was that the main place of work for a Turner in Crewe? What is a Turner?
Thank you for all the help

Thanks Pels.
What is a Turner?
Thank you for all the help
A turner is a person who uses/operates a lathe to turn round objects made usually of wood or metal, although a lot of other materials can and are turned.

It's almost true to say that there was no Crewe till the railway arrived.
"At its height, Crewe Works employed over 20,000 people" :o http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crewe_Works
The works had its own gasworks, brickworks, foundry etc - you can get some idea of its extent here (select on right the 1898 1:2500 map) http://www.old-maps.co.uk/maps.html?coords=369600,355800
I image all the terraced streets to the north of the works would have been built by the railway.
:)
