I am after help in gaining information in regard to Robert Rutherford and Margaret Stead. I believe they were married on 29 November 1846 at Pannal, York. I am not quite convinced this date of marriage is correct, or in fact applicable to this couple. In particular, I am after any information pertaining to either of their parents or siblings. I believe Margaret may have been born in Shefforth in 1812, but this too is unconfirmed. The info contained in this post is the sum total of what I have, so any help would be gratefully received.

Using FreeBMD and entering the Robert Rutherford choosing Dec 1/4 only and for the whole of England this is the result
Marriages Dec 1/4 1846
James Collett
William Dodds
Mary Garside
Elizabeth Greenwood
Thomas Greenwood
Eliza Hedley
Robert Rutherford
Sarah Senior
Elizabeth Westerman
More names than the usual 4 but there are an equal number of brides and grooms. All leeds reg dist. except for Dodds who is Otley but it is in italics which means it is not the usual vol or page number for that area.
Do you have Robert in any census. How do these names fit in to your tree? What is your starting point for looking for them?
I can't see a marriage for them on familysearch.org either.
There is a Robert Rutherford on the 1851 census with wife Eliza so did Robert marry Eliza Hedley as the names above.

1851
HO107/2390/119/12
King Street Cross gate Durham
Robert Rutherford 40 Tailor born Durham
Margaret Rutherford 37 born Shefforth
Charles Rutherford 10 born Shanmill Yorkshire
Hannah Rutherford 2 born Leeds
Still no marriage on FreeBMD to a Margaret Stead. using the ages of the children I searched the whole country 1839 to 1849. Three Robert Rutherford's came up with a Margaret on the same page, just not with the surname Stead. Of course they could have married before 1838 so it won't be on FreeBMD

Could this be her baptism? Shefforth/Spofforth - 2 different places or one.
Margaret Stead
baptism
28 Sep 1812
at Spofforth York
father - Matthew Stead
A birth certificate for one of the children would confirm Margaret's maiden name and to establish that he did marry a Stead. I can't even find a birth record for Charles at the moment. I wonder if he was baptised as a Stead because there is a big gap between his and Hannah's births

Hi Crisane, Thanks for your help - sorry I havent replied sooner, but have had computer problems that have hurt in both time and money.
The info I have re; the Rutherfords is pretty much contained in the original posting, but I have learnt in the last few days (as I have nly got the computer going again) that her name MAY have been Margaret Hailes (Hayles).
Robert and Margarets daughter Hannah - refered to below is my G.G. Grandmother (maternal line). Hannah married William Appleton.
Thanks again for the help you have provided - it is appreciated. :)

Hadn't even realised you hadn't been back :)
You can order birth certificates from the GRO here
http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/
stating that you only want it if the parents names are Robert Rutherford, occupation possibly tailor and mother Margaret surname unknown. No charge if not.
Births Jun 1/4 1848
Hannah Rutherford
Leeds
vol 23 page 529
There is a Charles Baker Rutherford birth in Stockport in March 1/4 1840 which is a little early for your Charles according to the 1851 census so if ordering a birth cert to be sure of hannah's parents ordering hers would be the way to go.
No results for a Robert Rutherford marrying a Margaret Stead or a Margaret Hayles/Hailes anytime, anywhere on FreeBMD

Hi Crisane, Thanks for the info in regard to costs.
I live in Australia, and need to start getting hold of UK Birth Certificates to a) confirm knowledge and b) give me the next leads, so your tip may be a saving for me.
Thanks for your time and info - appreciated. All of the bits add up and help as I am sure you know.
Thanks again, Wayne

Hello, I have also been researching Margaret Stead and Robert Rutherford for my own family tree. Roberts daughter Hannah married William Appleton in August 1871 & the marriage certificate states that Robert (who was then deceased) was indeed a tailor. I have a copy of this marriage certificate.
I have also found a marriage for Robert William Rutherford to Maragaret Stead on 29th Nov 1846 in the parish of Pannal, St Robert. He was a bachelor & tailor aged 33 and Margaret a spinster aged 34. Their fathers names were Robert Rutherford who was also a tailor & Matthew Stead a stone?. I cannot quite make this word out.
Our family trees obviously cross somewhere as Hannah Rutherford is my great great grandmother. I have been trying to gather information about her children and their families but am finding it very difficult.
I hope this is of help to you & would be so happy if you can be of any help to me. I would be more than willing to help any way I possibly can although I am very new to this and as yet it's all a little hit and miss.
