Title: William Scott/Mary Best - who were their parents?
Post by: Moyboy1 on Friday 22 February 13 02:26 GMT (UK)
William Scott married Mary Best in South Shields in December 1859.
I am desperately seeking any information about their parents or siblings - both Mary and William.
I have information on their children, but not too much about them. I believe Mary may be the daughter of George & Jane Train, but that is only very circumstantial at this stage.
Many thanks in advance for your help/sharing your knowledge.

It might help if you give dates and places of birth for these two.  Where/when do you have them on census

Hi Rosie, Many thanks for your efforts.
I think I told you about my computer woes in another post - hence my late replies.
In regard to Census info, I dont have a lot more than in my original details - much of that has been anecdotal, but I have found a little info over the last few days (only since I got the computer on again).
I think Jane (Train?) may have had a sister, Prudence b. June 1809.
William may have been born 1839 (but need to verify this)
William and Mary seem to have 7 children but not certain about this - Catherine, Isabella, William, John, George, Henry & Sarah - there may be more.
That is pretty much the sum total of the info I have on these people.
Any further help appreciated, but a genuine thanks for your help thus far.
Cheers,
Wayne

Hi Wayne

You originally asked for the marriage of William Scott & Mary Best which I gave in my other post. This marriage gives Mary's father as Samuel Best. Why do you think her parents are George & Jane Train.

I see that you have another post on the family of George Best & Mary Train
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,636875.msg4857918.html#msg4857918

From this post I assumed you were looking for  Mary Best dtr of George Train  ::)

So starting again,  the marriage I found for Mary Best/William Scott is obviously not the daughter of George which I assume is who you are looking for  :)

Best to start with what you DO know for sure, And work back just one step at a time confirming each step as you go.

Is this the family that you are following?
1871
38 crescent row Bishop wear mouth, Durham

William Scott 32 Rivetter bn south shields
Mary Ann 33 bn Northumberland
Isabella 10 bn north shields
Catherine 6 bn hendon durham
William 2 bn sunderland

One of the children's birth certs would confirm mums maiden name.

If t is Best, then the marriage Rosie has found looks good.

When and only when you have established if this is the right couple or not, then you can start thinking about their parents. If this does prove to be the right marriage, then you have her dad as Samuel Best and can work from there.

But no point in even thinking about that yet, till you have confirmed if this is the right track - ie if mums maiden name for the children is Best.

If you can confirm that William Scott and Mary Best (eldest child Isabella) are definitely the family you are tracing back have found out quite a bit confirming that her father was indeed a Samuel Best.

A bit involved so don't want to type it all out until you confirm this is the couple you are tracing.

Hi Liz and Annette, Yes, I can now confirm that I was on the wrong track when I was tracing "George" Best - it should indeed have been "Samuel" Best, eldest child Isabella (it appears George may well have been Samuels brother). Thank you both for the effort you have gone to. Annette, I would be more than happy to receive any additional info you may have as noted below. Kind regards, Wayne  :)

Since I posted almost 2 months ago, when there was no response I discarded the notes I had!!   So I've effectively done the research twice now.

Samuel Best married Isabella Thompson 19/10/1834 St. John's, Newcastle upon Tyne, Northumberland.   They had 5 known children born Walker, Northumberland - alas, the parish records for the relevant time frame are not online:

George bc.1835
Mary bc.1837
Samuel b.1839
Isabella b.1841
Thomas b.1844.

Samuel senior died in 1846 and his widow Isabella remarried to Joseph Sample in 1847.

1861 Census - North Shields, Northumberland - Ref.RG9 - 3837 - 75 - 44

William Scott    23     Iron Ship Builder       b. South Shields, Durham
Mary Scott       23                                     b. Walker, Northumberland
Isabella Scott   3 mos.                              b. North Shields, Northumberland
George Best brother in law  26                  b. Walker, Northumberland
Samuel Best     ditto           20                            ditto
Isabella Best    sister in law   19                          ditto

1851 Census - Pemberton Street, Houghton le Spring, Durham - ref.HO107-2393-452-34

Joseph Sample    30
Isabella Sample   35  (knocked a few years off her age)
George Best   16     wife's son
Samuel Best   12       ditto
Thomas Best   7        ditto
Frances Sample   3
Elizabeth Sample  16 mos.

Mary Best is in Hetton le Hole, Durham - ref. HO107 - 2393 - 437 - 5.   She is shown as a visitor to a John Birkbeck and his dau. Margaret.

Isabella Best, together with maternal grandmother Isabella Thompson, is shown as niece to a Henry and Jane Thompson in Willington, Northumberland

1841 - Longbenton, Northumberland - ref. HO107 - 822 - 5 - 13 - 18

Samuel Best    30       Coal Miner
Isabella Best    25
George Best   6
Samuel Best  2

Their daughter Mary was also in Longbenton but with her maternal grandparents, George and Isabella Thompson - ref. HO107 - 822 - 5 - 51 - 24.   Probably because mother Isabella was about to give birth to daughter Isabella born shortly after census (birth reg'd Sept.qtr.1841).

William Scott b.23/3/1838, bp.22/4/1838 St. Hilda's, South Shields, dau. of William and Jane.

Samuel Best's parents were Samuel Best and Mary Hall who married 8/5/1802 Christ Church, Tynemouth.   They had 5 known children:

James b.25/1/1803, bp.17/4/1803 Christ Church, Tynemouth, Northumberland
George bp.24/7/1805 Chester Le Street, Durham
Samuel bp.5/5/1811 Christ Church, Tynemouth, Northumberland
Mary  bp.20/8/1815 St. Hilda, South Shields, Durham
Thomas bp.9/12/1818             ditto

This information should set you on the path to work back.    The church events are all to be found on familysearch.org.
