Title: Bere Ferrers
Post by: Trees on Tuesday 19 February 13 12:15 GMT (UK)
Please has anyone access to the records for Bere Ferres. Some of us are trying to piece together a family from Cornwall on a  thread on the Cornwall board (RULE, BRYANT and REED)but we know that one of the family was examined for settlement in Bere Ferrers in 1790 so I wonder if there was any evidence of the missing family there
James and Sarah RULE had two children baptised in N. Molton before he was examined for settlement in 1765 His son William born 1764 N. Molton was examined for settlement in Bere Ferrers in 1790 We think James and Sarah then had a son in Illogan Cornwall in 1779 and have no other sighting of the family to prove it is the same couple. Now as William was in Bere Ferres in 1790 was this where James and Sarah went after 1767?
Are there any baptisms for children to a James and Sarah RULE between 1767 and 1779 please?
and as a long shot is there a baptism for a Sarah DUD about 1735? ( James married a Sarah DUD so did she have a connection with the town?
As James was a miner was there an mine active in 1767 in the area?
Hope you can help

Yes, Bere Ferrers was well known for mining - see http://genuki.cs.ncl.ac.uk/DEV/BereFerrers/index.html and there were many miners who came from Cornwall.

Many thanks for that DOB7 I can't see an OPC  or find any information on Baptisms and burials in Bere/Beer Ferrers Do you know how i can find any Rule baptisms or burials there? I have found a later directory listing a Richard Rule as a farmer I wonder if he was a decendent of James and Sarah  ???

You will need to hire a researcher for pre 1813 events. The Devon FHS has transcribed events 1813-1837/9 and these are also available via FindMyPast.

Its a shame the records will be in Exeter RO I can access Barnstaple easier. Last time we tried to get to Exeter our vehicle would not get into the Park and Ride as it did not have a high vehicle bay and had hieght restriction to get into the park which you had to cross to get to the RO There were barriers over the only other entrence too. It made me very cross The North Devon RO is so friendly and much easier to get to. Its just to far to go just to find you can't get near the RO.

The settlement Examination is on A2A in the Exeter catalogue and not in the N Devon one but it will be great to find the Baptism and Burial records there Many thanks for the straw to clutch  :) Now when can we get to Devon I doubt before Easter but any excuse to get to such a lovely county is great. :)

Family Search has Moriah daughter of William REID and Mary Foote     23 Nov 1814
John Reid 28 May 1817 son of William REID and Mary Foote     Higher Chapel Independent Bere Alston is this possibly the same family? The villages are close and an independent chapel would serve a wide area.

Thanks .. never thought to try a spelling variation for Reed to Reid... the name Moriah does not repeat but will see if I can find her .. There should be a Selina someplace as every family has one bit cannot find the first .. more looking to do!

Reed, Read, Reid, and the rarer Rede are all variants of the same name.
