I know that it possibly not uncommon but I have two family members not listed on the 1911 census,a greatgrandfather and on a different family branch a grandmother who was a widow and her son is also missing. They all did not die till way after the census and I dont think they would have been out of the country on census night, any suggestions???/
-
Usually some ambiguity in spelling of the surname.
-
also worth checking by address, based on where they and other family lived in 1901, addresses or townland from certs etc...

Hi Shane,
Have done both of your suggestions but so far have not come up with anything.....

do you want to try posting some details (e.g. names, ages, occupation, details of 1901 returns etc) to see if anyone can find them for you ?
-
Yeah must be worth a try.My greatgrandfather was Patrick Woods of 8 Ecles Street in Dublin and he died in 1915 aged 77.My grandmother was Elizabeth Gurrr nee Cullen a widow, actually twice widowed born in 1875 and her son James Darragh aged about 11,they lived in the North Dock area of Dublin at various addresses. These people were on the 1901 census but do not appear on the 1911 one.Any help would be greatly appreciated....

census return for reference :
Woods household, Eccles St. (http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Dublin/Inns_Quay/Eccles_Street/1324287/)
Patrick Woods age 50, occupation carrier, born King's county
wife Rose age 40 born Co. Meath
daughter Katie age 21 born 'Dublin'
have you located Rose or Katie in 1911 ?
-
Rose(Roseanna)Patricks wife was still living at 8 eccles Street while Kate(MaryKate)had married and was living in Dorset Street.
-
I'm thinking Patrick's occupation as carrier might have taken him out on the road ... maybe he was away for work on census night, and missed out wherever he was staying ?
-
Could be a possibility or perhaps in hospital??

Could be a possibility or perhaps in hospital??
exactly - workhouses, prisons etc also used initial. I think away from home working might be more likely. Maybe he tied up the horse somewhere and setup something to sleep under the cart ?
There are a small number or King's County born Woods in 1911, but no sign of a Patrick anywhere..
....My grandmother was Elizabeth Gurrr nee Cullen a widow, actually twice widowed born in 1875 and her son James Darragh aged about 11,they lived in the North Dock area of Dublin at various addresses. These people were on the 1901 census but do not appear on the 1911 one.....
I see some Gurrys in 1901, but no Gurrs......what address is your Elizabeth at ?

In 1901my grandmother was a Darragh living in Seville Place North Dock, after the death of her husband she married a William Gurr in 1906 and he died in 1910..Last address on marraige cert was Shamrock Terrace
-
this household ?
Darragh Household, Sevillve Place Cottages (http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Dublin/North_Dock/Seville_Place_Cottages__3rd_Avenue/1277307/)
so she could be listed in 1911 as Gurrr, Darragh or Cullen...
I think James might be the one to search for - Did Elizabeth marry again after the death of William ?
-
Thats the household, she married my grandfather in 1913 so yeshe could be a Darragh Gurr or Cullen,
-
wonder would the death or burial for William give a clue ... maybe another address ?
-
according to the BMD Index he died Dublin South - so other side of the city...
-
he's buried in Glasnevin... it's not always possible, but I'll see if I can figure out any part of the address... (it's like playing hangman, you have to guess letters a couple at a time)
-
his address includes the following letters :
b,d,e,f,i,l,n,o,r,s,t,u and y
so there's no a,c,g,h,j,k,m,p,q,v or z
unsurprisingly one of the words in the address is street.
I think the u and the y might help - dont think they would be common in street names..
(p.s. there may be more than one of each of the letters)
-
three fragments of the address... (not ness. in this order)
du ey lin
EDIT : doh - Dublin
-
Almost every address at Glasnevin has DUBLIN in it!
Sorry, ignore!
-
got it - Foley Street !
-
which is here in 1911 (http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Dublin/North_Dock/Foley_St_/)
North Dock - so possibly William died in an accident, or in a hospital and Foley street was his home address
-
Actually he did die in an hospital, what number in Foley Street???
-
the only digits that are matching for me are 2 and 7....
-
the address seems to be 27 Foley Street, which is occupied by a Joyce family in 1911
Joyce household, 27 Foley St. (http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Dublin/North_Dock/Foley_St_/31360/)
looks like Elizabeth and James moved soon after William's death.

Yes I have seen those records. And funny enough Rosanna spent time in Mountjoy in early 1911 but was home for the census
-
I am having the same problem with my great grandmother, Rose, or Rosa Swann at 1911 census. She is not with her husband and family. I think she may be in the Workhouse/hospital as one of the 'initials'. She has spent time there before. I have tried many times to change spellings etc, etc. I have found out that my great grandparents had another son that I knew nothing about by checking the Family Search link though!
Thank you.
