Title: Mary RAINE, b1821 Wakefield, d of William RAINE of Staindrop
Post by: LDW on Monday 18 February 13 10:51 GMT (UK)
Does anyone know anything about this branch of the Raine family? There seem to be billions of them in the north east and I can't sort the wheat from the chaff.

Burke's 'The Patrician' says: "Carr, Mark William, Esq. Stamford, Lincolnshire, to Mary, youngest daughter of the late William Raine, Esq. Staindrop, Durham, 12th May. " The marriage was at Greenwich, 12 May 1846.

Mary was born 8 Dec 1821 at Bretton near Wakefield, so William Raine must have died between 1821 and 1846. There's a Rev William Raine, but Burke calls this one is just 'Esq' so it can't be him  - and he lives beyond 1846 anyway.

Looking for Mary's mother's name, and - if possible - her grandparents.

the baptism record is entered above the first entry in the Janueary 1822 page - the date (as Maria posted) is just given as 1821 - so as Mary was born Dec possibly her baptism was omitted from 1821 page - others entered in 1822 give date of baptism and of birth .
Father's occupation is given as "Agent"

Thank you - this is excellent.

Forgive my stupidity, but how can I work out where they were married and get her maiden name?

Mary Carr (Raine) is my second great-grandmother, daughter of William Raine and Elizabeth Raine. See http://www.geni.com/people/Mary-Carr/6000000018036136373 It appears that Elizabeth's maiden name was "Middleton". Did you find any further information about Mary's parents or grandparents?

Thank you, Reggie98.

I have William RAINE 1776-1833, m.21 Mar 1807, Satley to Elizabeth  BELL, b. 1783 Satley, Durham, d. 1869.

No mention of Middleton. Have I got it wrong?

Some info to help confirm or eliminate info;

BURIALS, StMary, Raindrop, Durham
WILLIAM Raine, 6 Jan 1833 age 19, abode New Raby
WILLIAM Raine, 16 Jan 1833 age 57 (1776), abode Staindrop
WILLIAM Raine, 7 Sept 1849 age 77 (1772), abode Staindrop
(Source FreeREG)

Strangely FreeREG lists the 1807 Marriage twice;
21 March 1807, Chapel of Ease, Satley, William RAINE to Elizabeth BELL
21 March 1807, All Saints, Lancaster, William RAINE of Winstone Parish to Elizabeth BELL whose abode is Broom Shields.
One may be Banns and the other where it took place.

ROBERT Raine was Baptised 9 January 1809, Auckland-St. Andrew, Durham
Birth 27 Dec 1808, Parents William and Eliz RAINE, nee BELL
Abode Coundon
Fathers Occp Farmer
1st son. Father a native of Barforth and mother a native of Satley
(FreeREG)

Trish :)

EDIT there is also a Marriage 10 May 1812 in Denton, Durham,  to Elizabeth MARLEY for a William Raine

Hi Reggie and LDW,
Do you have Williams Parents or a Will for him?
Do you have Mary in the 1841 Census?

There is a Mary Raine born c 1821 in Staindrop in 1841, F/S, not born in County.
Living with a Margaret Raine age 85 (1756ish)

To help eliminate there is this Baptism;
William RAINE, 28 Jan 1776, Chapelry of Barnard Castle, Gainsford, Durham
Parents WILLIAM/MARGARET
Abode Barnard Castle
William RAYNE Married Margaret ROBSON, 4 Nov 1770 same Church

My 4 x great grandfather was William Raine who married Mary Liddle on 25 May 1800 at Staindrop.
I'm not sure how this fits in with your Raine family, but I just wanted to post this so I can follow the thread.  It has encouraged me to research the family further
