Hi All.
I am trying to locate where my GG/Grandparents James and Ellen Barker were laid to rest.
Ellen died on the 11th November 1854, her place of death on certificate was 2 Booth Court Dukinfield, it also stated she was widow of James Barker occupation Overlooker. I suspect James died between 1834 and 1841 as his youngest child was born 1835/36 in Stalybridge but he was not with Ellen and children on the 1841 census they were Roman Catholics. Were there any cemetery's or Catholic Church graveyards in the Dukinfield/Stalybridge area at that time and if so who would hold the burial records. Any help will be really appreciated.
Regards Dave.

Dave - GENUKI is useful for this sort of information. They list one RC church for Dukinfield, but don't say whether there was a graveyard. Under Stalybridge there was St Peter the link has some of the registers at Cheshire RO & others missing:

Update - I've just browsed Tameside Family History & they have more suggestions:

Hi mshrmh.
Many thank for all your help with this post.
I see that St Marys RC Church in Dukinfield has put all the RC records for Stalybridge Dukinfield and Ashton Under Lyne areas from about 1823 onto a cd. I will get in touch with them to purchase a copy if they are still on sale.

Hi heatherjulie.
Thank you for your reply.
Does that mean she was actually buried at St Peters or that the funeral service was conducted there. James her husband could have been buried somewhere else because according to what I have seen on the internet they did'nt start building St Peters until 1838 and he was possibly deceased by then.

hi
Genuki says that St Peters doesn't have a graveyard.

Hi
I'm hoping to go to the archives centre this week so will try to get information about RC burials in the area.

Hi
There is also St. Pauls, which is actually in Hyde but not far from Dukinfield. It's actually in Newton, Hyde, which is the next town to Dukinfield.

I don't think that St Paul's has a grave yard

I've just asked my head teacher (i work in a school). That is her church and she said that there is a graveyard but only one grave there and no one knows who it is! Weird or what?
-
Forenames:Ellen
Surname:Barker
Birth Date:1790
Marital Status:
Burial Date:14 Nov 1854
Burial Year:1854
Age:64 years
Sex:
Burial Place:Ashton under Lyne, St Peter's Catholic Church, Staleybridge
Date of Death:10 Nov 1854
But as someone said, Genuki says this church does not have a graveyard, which is weird that it says Burial Place.

The local council has a habit of allowing the graveyards to be "cleared" . One of the latest was Christ Church where 300 bodies were removed to make way for a community centrer.
Check with Tameside Local History as to the records held:

I have already checked the records in the Archives centre. ???
I thought that the service might have been held in the newly built St Peter's and then the burial elsewhere.

Looking on the 1874 Town Plan for Stalybridge, there was a burial ground at St Peters!
Looking on google street view, the churchyard has been grassed over. There is no sign of any stones.

This still doesn't help to find the grave for James as St Peter's wasn't built at the time when Madeira066 thinks he died

Hi All.
Thank you all for your help with this post.
I am going to assume thet Ellen who died in 1854 was buried at St Peters RC Church Stalybridge, It is possible that her husband James could have been buried at St Mary's RC Church Dukinfield where I believe there were interments from 1823. Once again many thanks.
Dave.
