Title: Mary Williams born Wem Shrops 1837
Post by: gillm on Monday 18 February 13 08:59 GMT (UK)
Can anyone help please to find Mary Williams in 1841 and 1851?

Mary Williams was  born Wem, Shropshire in 1837 (between April and August). She married Robert Morris, a tinplate worker 28th December 1857 at St John's Church, Chester and her father was recorded as James and a labourer. I can find her in 1861, married with a daughter, Sarah Ann, living in Liverpool and have her death in 1862 age 25 and buried in Chester.

Any help would be appreciated. Gillm

Hi Gill

Not a good match so far so I'm trying to work out where she was born from the 1861 - it looks like Weenm but it can't be. are you sure it's Wem  :-\

Ref is RG9/2685/100/50 for others who might be trying to help.

(Added - no clues from marriage witnesses either  :( )

Because it seems nearer to Cheshire than others, this might be her in 1851. it doesn't help trace her family though:

HO107/1994/202/5
Church street, Ellesmere

A servant in the home of the Birds family

Mary Williams, servant, 14, general servant, b. Wem

It doesn't look like Wem to me either, but I can't think what else it might be.

There only seems to be one Mary Williams of the right age in Wem in the 1841 census

Aston, Wem (all born in county)

Thomas Williams 65 blacksmith
Mary Williams 40
Edward Williams 30
William Williams 17
Martha Williams 7
Mary Williams 5

HO107/902/1

Problem with the 1841 is there being no relationship listed but Mary might be the granddaughter of Thomas

I too had looked at the baptism in Onibury as a possibility. Interestingly, Robert after the death of Mary went to live in Stokesay with his new wife Elizabeth and had 2 children. He died in 1874 in Hereford and was allegedly a Station Master but is buried in Chester. Everyone's help is really appreciated. gillm

I've posted a clip of the census image on the deciphering and recognition board to see whether anyone can see an alternative to Wem.

Thanks for the 1851 census info. However I am not convinced this is my Mary as I would have expected her to be younger than 16, in light of all the other information I have. gillm

Yes I dont think that is the right one either. On the 1851 there are two Marys both born 1837 in Wem the one Brevitas found and another who is a visitor in the household of William Hell and family (think this is supposed to be Hill) interestingly his wife Elizabeth is also born in Wem

I don't know whether you saw the other thread, but Veeblevort made an excellent suggestion regarding the odd spelling of "Wem".

This census return is for Liverpool not Shropshire, so the writer
may not have heard of Wem. Note also that this writer does not
dot his 'i's. See RG09/2685/100/50.

Where were you born?
Answer 'Wem in Shropshire'.
Writes down 'Wemin  Shropshire'.

I have found the other Mary Williams born 1837 Wem down as William on the 1841

all born in county

Edward Williams 40
Thomas Williams 45
Ann Wlliams 60
John Richard 7
Mary Willams 4

HO107/902/9

There is also a May (which could be Mary) Williams next door aged 3 with parents John and Ann

Thanks everyone for all the information and the interesting suggestion about the spelling of Wem. Mary's father was recorded as James on the marriage record and assuming this to be correct wouldn't fit with parents John and Ann and not sure about the other family. It is possible that one or both parents had died and that she was with grandparents or other relatives?

I wondered that too I have been through all the James Williams in Wem and none of them have a daughter called Mary of the right age. My other thought was that she was illigitimate and her mother married someone else not long after her birth
