I have been tracing my family tree for a while now and doing alright accept for my grandfathers family. Before he died he wrote a letter with everything he knew. In it he said his parents where William Anderson and Jane Watson, Jane's parents where Gavin and Agnes Williams mother was Margaret he was born in Blantyre around 1884 and he was orphaned at a young age. so I found the marriage certificate. traced the Watson's no problem there. then I turned to the Anderson's. On the 1901 census I have William living in the right place doing the right job and is listed with mother Margaret. only his marriage certificate in 1909 lists his parents as William Anderson and Christina Anderson M.S. Stewart. I can find no record of a birth for William or a marriage for his parents. the only other information the letter contained was that the Andersons where descended from a lady Margaret Ingus who was disinherited for running of with the coachman and that somewhere way back in the past we have links to France through someone Named Ludovic. I am at my wits end with this any advice or help would be very much appreciated thanks

On the 1909 marriage is his mother listed as still alive?
-
yes on the 1909 marriage certificate it list Christina Anderson M.S. Stewart still living father William is deceased he is listed as an Engine Keeper.
-
Have you searched for a death for Christina?
-
Only 2 births registered in Blantyre for a William Anderson
1 in 1883 and 1 in 1885
-
I have searched for a death and marriage record for Christina also birth for William using both Margaret and Christina and still nothing matches.
-
I have also tried searching cambuslang as the 1901 census lists cambuslang as place of birth for William but still nothing matches
-
Looks like the 1883 William died in 1884 so that only leaves the 1885 birth to check

I checked that record a while back the fathers name is william but the mother is listed as a grace Maine. I followed that line to there marriage certificate and the paternal grandmother is named Margaret but she would be too old to fit with the Margaret in 1901 census.
-
Where are they living on 1901 census?
-
Hi,
Did William have any siblings?

169 Bushyhill street Cambuslang. listed as Margaret a dressmaker, William a chemist apprentice and an Archibald brown boarder.
-
No he was an only child
-
Perhaps William got his father's name wrong on his marriage record
This is the closest I can see for a Margaret born in Lesmahagow on 1891 census
Robert Anderson 33 born Whitburn occ Engine keeper
Margaret Anderson 33 born Lesmahagow
William Anderson 5 born Rutherglen
Address:
Wellshot Place, Rutherglen
-
that would explain my grandfathers name which was Robert but still don't know who this Christina Stewart is I can understand getting one name wrong but both parents? like I said a real mystery but I will have a look at the Margaret and Robert you have shown me it a new avenue to check out thank you.
-
Check for a death of a Robert soon after 1891
-
Margaret Anderson the widow of Robert Anderson (Colliery engine keeper) died 1926 and son William was informant
-
Thanks for sending the marriage certificate through
William's address on the 1909 marriage certificate is 267 Main Street, Cambuslang
Margaret Anderson the widow of Robert Anderson died at 267 Main Street, Cambuslang in 1926
Like you I can't understand why he got his mother's name wrong
-
looking at the 1861 census I have found two Robert William Andersons the correct age thinking maybe missed out first name because as you can see William was engine keeper too big a coincidence just need to work out who Christina is now.
-
I've sent the death record to you
-
From the info given on her death record this looks like her marriage
1884 ANDERSON ROBERT and NISBET MARGARET at HAMILTON /LANARK
-
that would fit because Nisbet was my great aunts middle name and no one knew where that came from. thank you so much.
-
I spoke to my uncle with this information he said apparently my great grandmother was furious when her husband named my great aunt after his mother.
My uncle remembers asking his grandmother(my great grandmother Jeannie) about the family and being told his grandfathers mother (William, mother) was an evil harlot. nothing but a whore. apparently when her husband William died Jeannie destroyed the Anderson family bible and all papers with regards to her husbands family.

I can understand him getting his father's name wrong if he was young when Robert died but it is a mystery how he got his mother's name wrong too
