Title: Samuel Stinson, New Jersey, 1850 Census
Post by: Lisa in California on Saturday 16 February 13 03:03 GMT (UK)
Samuel Stinson, born c1824, Ireland, appears on the 1850 Essex County, New Jersey census.  I would like to know if he is living with other family members, please?  Also, I'm wondering if he might be in any directories around that time, please?

He is not an ancestor...just wondering if he might be a cousin or other relative to my ancestor, John Ovens. (I have census information for John Ovens.) Thank you for any help.

Doesn't appear to be living with family, can't see any directory entry for him so far.

There is a Henry Stinson listed at the same address born Ireland 1832 occupation bookbinder.

Sorry.  When I looked closer it's Henry Stevenson.

Thank you merjones for your interest in this thread.  :)

Thank you Sandra for pointing out the image.  I didn't know they had 1850 images.

We believe John Ovens' was born in 1811 in Inishmacsaint, Ireland, to Wm. Ovens and Elizth. Stinson.  John Ovens married Jane Wakefield in 1842 in New Jersey, USA (Wakefields arrived in 1840).  Ovens and Wakefields are listed on the New Jersey census in 1850.  John Ovens and his family were living in Toronto, Canada c1853 (and remained in Toronto).  There is a book about the Wakefields, which states that they came from Aughrim, Ireland.

Living with John Ovens and his family in 1881 (Toronto, Canada) was a Jennie Stinson.

Since I cannot find any information about John Ovens prior to 1842, I thought I would see if I could find any Stinson family members, especially since one lived with the family during the census.  When I saw that a Samuel Stinson was living in Essex County in 1850, I was hoping he might be a relative.

Unfortunately, the 1850 census doesn't provide any additional clues to this man.  But, thank you both for your interest.  It is appreciated.   :)

PS  There are prior threads about Ovens, Wakefields and one about Stinsons in Ontario, Canada.  I've not inquired about Stinson living in New Jersey before now.
