Title: Richard Farmer b.1836(?) Stoke
Post by: welshconway on Friday 15 February 13 17:56 GMT (UK)
Please can anybody help me find Richard Farmer born 1836 or earlier Stoke on Trent. The last trace I have of him is 1871 as an iron moulder in Derby age 35. I'm wondering if he went abroad. Thanks Steve.

I see he was indexed as Farner in 1871 and had quite a number of children - all b Derbyshire except Richard snr and Walter

Have you tried searching using the childrens names

Richard   35
Kate 44
John   17
Richard 12
Kate 8
Albert Henry 6
Walter   4 b Ashton Lancs
Ernest   2
Oscar   under 1mth

Yes I tried using John and Richard but didn't find any thing in 1861. In 1901 his age is given as 71 so he could be Richard Farmer b.1831, Methodist baptism and parents Richard and Eliza. Eliza turns up in 1841 with 3 children in Staffs...Richard age 10. But I find no trace in 1851 and 1861, or any trace of a marriage to the first wife Kate who is 9 years his senior......i remember a family myth that someone went to Canada but can find no trace there either.

1881 looks like he has re-married to Dorothy

Here's the reference  RG11 Piece 3398 Folio 25 Page 43

I used Oscar as my search criteria which turned up Oscar Farmer aged 10 b Derbyshire

Sorry....I was working backwards...so with last trace I was meaning first trace.......I was interested in finding any sign of him before 1871......i.e. in 1861 and 1851......which might indicate that he is the John Farmer I found in 1841...or any marriage.

That sounds as though you can't find him after 1871 and thought he may have emigrated

So to clarify:

You are looking for him on censuses 1841-1861
You are looking for his marriage to Kate

He is "married" to Dorothy in 1881 but there is no death in Derbyshire for a Kate or Catherine Farmer with her birthyear

Yes.....sorry for the muddle!
I'm looking for him before 1871.
I wonder if he went abroad during that period before 1871 or if there's a reason for him not appearing in the censuses of 1851 and 1861.

I wonder if Kate is known by another name? There is a job lot of baptisms on Familysearch on 5 Nov 1865 for John, Henry, Richard and Emma - children of Richard and Mary.

eg  https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/NJNB-F8B

think this is the same couple on 1861 at RG 9, 2503, 51, 28, in the same parish as 1871. here Mary is 37 and Richard 47 - both born Mayfield, Staffs, along with Hannah, 9, Henry 3 and Richard 6 months. He's a tailor

Eureka!!!! That's wonderful! Also found a reference to Richard Farmer in Merchant Navy Seamen's records that he was a sailor from 1845...sailor might be Tailor! This is getting v.interesting! Thanks a lot, Steve

That Richard was 47yrs old in 1861 and the children do not match those in 1871

You will find births on freebmd for John, Richard and Oscar - would suggest buying a copy of one of those birth certs to get Kates maiden name

I can't find any marriage for him to Dorothy or Kate/Catherine but those 3 births above were all registered as Farmer and Walter was registered as Farmer in 1867 in Ashton under Lyne Lancs

Found this marriage

Marriages June qtr 1864
Richard Farmer   Derby  7b    634
Kate Hallsworth   on same page

I don't know which birth cert you are going to send for but if it's Richards - make sure you send for the 1859 one and not the 1860 one.  The 1860 Richard is a different family

Wow! That's great....I was wondering if he was even legally married.......but it could be the non-conformist thing.....can't find baptism references for the children either. I do remember a Hallsworth 2nd cousin living with the family in one census so it makes sense. The children John and Richard are born before 1864 so they must be from a previous marriage of Kate or maybe Richard.

They can't be from a previous marriage of Kate's as their births are registered as Farmer
