Title: Henry Pettifer of Birmingham
Post by: Delver on Friday 15 February 13 16:04 GMT (UK)
I'm struggling with this great uncle of mine! He was born in 1896 in Elmdon Warks and in 1911 was living in South Yardley, Birmingham. I can't find his marriage (said by an old aunt to be to a lady called May) nor his death which was in a motor car accident some time before the 60s. My aunt has said he was a shopworker in Small Heath, Birmingham and had three daughters.

I also cannot find his brother Ernest (b. 1889)also in Elmdon - who was not with the rest of the family in 1911.

Any help much appreciated thanks.

Hi Delver,

May was the pet form of both the names Margaret & Mary.

A marriage for Henry is a bit tricky as i think that May or Margaret/Mary might have been her middle name. There don't appear to be any Margaret's or Mary's marrying a Pettifer.

I have found a possible death record for Henry on freebmd though:

Pettifer, Harry, Age 53, December Qtr 1949, Newbury, 6a 54

Harry being a short form of Henry of course & the age being spot on makes this a good possibility!

Hope this helps.

Kind regards

David

Hi Delver:

Do you have the birth records for Henry or Ernest? I'm wondering what their actual given names are.

There is 1906 Maritime Death Registration for an Ernest Pettifor on FindMyPast.

No I don't have any other records than the census returns.

I don't think Newbury would fit - that's Berkshire isn't it? He would never have left Birmingham.
