I have Henry Edward Norris', my great grandfather, marriage certificate from 1879 showing his birth in 1856 in Swindon, Wiltshire. However I can find no trace of any birth records or mention in Wiltshire Census records.
He did move to the London area at some time later, as he married in Strand, Middlesex.
I have even wondered if he may have been adopted, but information in this respect is even more limited.
His father was Charles Norris apparently and seems to get confusing, rightly or wrongly with a Charles Cornelius Norris. Some one who once again has very little confirmations to be found.
This is extremely frustrating as I can go no further with my tree until this is resolved.
Any help that may be available would be sincerely appreciated if anybody has Norris tree information.
I have wondered if at that time it could have been possible for him to have been born in Swindon, but adopted as a baby and registered in Clerkenwell London, where there is an H E Norris listed for that year ?

Hi "OldTone"
Have you checked familysearch.org
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/XQ7P-8Q4
There are lots of "Norris" family mentioned there and most seem to have a middle name of "Henry".
One might give you some new leads ;D
Good Luck

Hi
Although civil registration started in 1837, the onus was on registrars to go around their district and collect birth registrations and so a small number of births failed to be registered. In 1875 the law was amended and the onus put on parents to register births. So there may not be a birth cert to find.
In the absence of anything obvious in the birth index, a baptism may be the best you can hope for.

Could you possibly give us all the details from the marriage certificate?
I was kind of looking at these people in Battersea:
1871
707/ 16/ 26
NORRIS Charles with wife Charlotte and children Edwd(age 15 born Swindon),
Alice,Charles and Will.
Haven't found them in 1861 as yet but Alice was supposedly born Woolwich.

Would I be correct in saying that birth records for Swindon on Freebmd only start from 1899?

Hi
Would I be correct in saying that birth records for Swindon on Freebmd only start from 1899?
claire
Yes, prior to this records from Swindon came under the Highworth registration district.

Some entries do come up under Swindon

I think the Clerkenwell birth can be discounted as your Norris family have no obvious links north of the river Thames
Poss baptism
St James Clerkenwell 11 May 1856
Henry Edwards to Matthew Thomas & Sarah Norris born 18 Feb

Thanks to all replies.
I have attached the marriage cert.
Whoops - no I havent as their is a mention for attachments but nothings to follow to add one.
The info from the 1881 census that Claire.t has posted is correct though.
Maybe you have given me a lead in the MaureeninNY and Claire.t responses. Henry Edward is shown on one census as Edward Norris and a line in "engine smith" may tie in with later becoming a steam hammer engine driver. And he may be following in dad Charles footsteps as shown.
Its looking hopeful so I will try to follow up on this lot.
Many thanks again.

Just to let you know you can't attach images to posts on any of the 'request' boards.
But a transcription of any sources may be helpful.
