Title: Mini-Meet in Sydney?
Post by: deeiluka on Friday 15 February 13 09:00 GMT (UK)
Any chance?    ???

I’ll be staying in the Southern Highlands for most of April, May and June, and would love it if we could arrange one during that time.

Anyone interested?

Dee    :)

May I please be on the list, I am never sure of my diary commitments because there's still a couple of elderly rellies whose needs will always take precedence over almost everything. ;D

I will do my bestest to fit in with whatever date works best for you Dee.  I am around 2 hours north of Sydney.

Cheers,  JM

And I'll have to catch a train in from Moss Vale or Bundanoon, JM..... think that's about a 2 hour trip too.   :D

Be good if we can get a few together. We can talk dates and meeting place when we know if there's interest.

Hopefully there's a few more that might like to join in.

Make it 4 "possibles", please, Dee.  So long as I don't get a phone call to work on the chosen day, I'd like to try to get there.  Are you thinking of meeting up anywhere in particular?  My 5th cousin (Denise T) and I usually head for the Mitchell Library - there's a coffee shop onsite, apart from the obvious historical lures  :)

Sounds like a great meeting place, Deb!   :D

Central to everyone, and as you say....coffee shop and historical lures as well! (Very new to me, I might add, but I'm keen to learn more, especially if a permanent move is considered.)

I'll come!..... but will need to organise a leave day if it's not a Sat or Sun.

(The cafs at Sydney Hospital & Hyde Park Barracks, both just along from the Library, are licensed, and have bigger menus  ;D )

Great news, Ann.    :D

The cafs you mention sound like good options too.

If we agree on a date by the beginning of April (I leave for NSW in the second week of April), will that give you time to arrange a leave day? Those of us making longish train trips in to Sydney may find it easier on a week day.....better timetables.

Thinking - I could do a day trip from Canberra - bus or train but the evening train back to Canberra only does Monday, Wednesday, Friday, Sunday.  Bus every day so maybe...........

We are off overseas early in May so would not be available after 3 May.  As I am so wishy-washy with dates there's no need to work around me.  Just pick a date/time and I'll come - or not! City centre works well for me.

Just thought I'd put in an EoI

I feel like a gate-crasher Dee  :D

I don't even know what a "y t" is?  I did a google search and it suggested either "are you there" or "you tube".  But I don't think they are related to a liquor licence.

Perhaps I have missed the point ...?  (it's a worry)

Oh no Ros....definitely don't feel like a gate crasher. This is a mini -meet for any RootsChatters who would like to join in a mini-meet in Sydney and are able do so.    :)

I will explain the YT reference though. There's a few of us who post on The Australian Board who also post on Totally Off Topic, and in particular on the YTG thread. It's where we relax and joke around and share chat that has nothing to do with family history. It started off as there's some of us who can't type fast enough to keep up on the Chat board, and was named because of a joke about drinking wine, in particular Australian Yellow Tail wines. YTG stands for Yellow Tail Gang/Group/Gaggle/Guys/Gals or whatever, and through our participation some of us have developed very good caring friendships. However, quite a few of us, me included, don't even drink alcoholic beverages.

But I'll emphasise that this is not a YTG meet....it's a RootsChatters meet, so no need for anyone to feel anything but really welcome.   :)

I've been involved in several mini-meets in Brisbane when I've been visiting up there; the first starting off in an old cemetery!   ;D
They were all very memorable and happy occasions, with lots and lots of chat, and lots of laughs as well.

I'm really looking forward to meeting more of you folk I "see" on here.    :D

Title: Re: Mini-Meet in Sydney?
Post by: deeiluka on Tuesday 19 February 13 01:41 GMT (UK)
Great Muss.     :)

We'll have to take travelling times into account when working out what time to meet.
I've just looked at the train timetable for the Southern Highlands line and noted that it'll take me about 2 and a half hours too. When we start talking about time and place, maybe those of us travelling a fair distance need to say the earliest time we can make it.

Train from Canberra at Central 11.02am so another 30 mins to get to wherever (plus however late the train is  :P )

Dee, the Canberra train picks up at
Bundanoon 08:58
Moss Vale    09:10
Bowral    09:17
Mittagong    09:22

Be lovely if you could make it, Judith!   :D

And if you could, I'd make a point of catching that train. (And we'd cross our fingers about it being late!)

We could consider all meeting for an early lunch and then head wherever we decide to continue, such as the Mitchell Library.

Er Arh, are reprobate old blokes allowed to come too?  :'(  I may even drive down and can provide a very nice Limousine service for any who may require transport. (Newcastle to Sydney) $2.50/person Providing a seniors or concession card are possessed and sighted before entering. :o
Lollies free. Umm, call of nature stops are also available at laybys

Nice food and ALL ;D beverages are able to be consumed at (weather permitting) the Botanic Gardens adjacent. Or I do know some nice Pubs that do a very good counter lunch, providing it is one I am allowed into. I do have some lifetime bans still in force. :-X

I will check my diary but I think I am available ::)

Errrr.....  I may take Mr Odd's offer up, if I don't it will only be because I cannot make the MEET.  I will save up my pennies to get the $2.50 bit organised straight away. Of course, I have the Card already, its the pennies that I will be chasing.   Perhaps it will be Neil who will be the first RChatter I meet face to face.  Dee knows that I have been trying to get to meet her for so long, but I am sure she will excuse me for possibly meeting Mr T first.   I could drive across to Morriset and catch the limo there  ;D  ;D.

Cheers,  JM  (off to look for me penny purse, umm..... where did I last see it .... probably under somewhere on my fh desk.  ::)  ::) )

Sounds like some are going to travel in style!   ;D   ;D

Leonie, don't know if I'm going to make Brisbane this trip....and if I do, it certainly won't be in March. Leave here on April 9th on the Indian Pacific. I'll hopefully arrive in Southern Highlands in time for dinner on the 10th. Might need a few days to settle in before gadding about again. I'm planning to be there all of May and all of June.

But....if you could come up with the a good reason for visiting Sydney during that time, it would be wonderful!!!!!

Well, I'm booked in to meet a new great niece who arrives in March. I don't have to be there for the birth, any time after the event will do. I think new babies are much more interesting at about 4-6 weeks, don't you??  :D

Title: Re: Mini-Meet in Sydney?
Post by: deeiluka on Wednesday 27 February 13 11:22 GMT (UK)
I thought it might help to make a list of all those who've shown interest in the proposed mini-meet.
So far I think we have the following.....

JM  (Majm)
Trish (trish1120)
Deb (Deb D)
Marty (martywillis)
Ann (annmck)
Judith (judb)
Ros (rosball)
Debbie (Walcha72)
Muss (Muss)
ff (fastfusion)
Neil (Neil Todd)
Leonie (Loneybones)
Dee (Deeiluka)
Bonnie (BonnieDownUnder)

And going by the comments so far, it looks as though it might be good to aim for a day in the last two weeks of April. For people who are travelling by train, a weekday is probably best. We need to avoid Thursday 25th for obvious reasons. The only other drawback of a day during those two weeks is that it's school holidays.

Dee     :)

Is it too rude to put in my preferences?  ::)  ;D  If other days suit others more then no worries.
Prefer week beginning 15th but can do the next week.
Monday, Wednesday, Friday, Sunday are the best days for me as the evening train back to Canberra doesn't run on Tues, Thurs or Sat. I can leave my car at the station for the day - bus terminus is nowhere near the rail station  >:(

Hi Dee ... may I too gate crash this mini-meet in Sydney - it sounds great fun.  I am relatively new to Roots Chat however I do see that a few people attending have been of great assistance to me in my endeavours tracking down Ancestors.

At present I am available w/c 22nd also 29th April.  Unable to do between 8-20 April as having R&R in Lake Toba!

It will just depend on work commitments when an actual date is picked if I can make it or not.  I'm only 1/2 hour from city so transport no worry for me.

Oh Dee, don't get me started on Canberra public transport - grrrrrrrrrrr

The railway station is not too bad to get to in the daytime but at night by public transport  >:( :'( :(
The early train is too early though to get there by public transport and there is nowhere in the city to eave the car to collect it from the bus/coach terminus.  This place is set up for people who do not have to pay for their own transport - the airport is awful by public transport also.  Sorry - this topic is completely irrelevant.  ::)

Wednesday 17th April
Friday 19th April
Wednesday 24th April
Friday 26th April

Unfortunately, there's no way we're going to find one day that will suit everyone.   :'(

Personally, I'd prefer a Wednesday but a Friday will be OK.

Hi folks,

I’ve now heard from everyone who showed an interest in the Mini-Meet in Sydney, and have their preferences….apart from Loneybones, who says just to let her know the date, and if she can make it, she will, and if she can’t, well maybe another time.

Unfortunately, it’s impossible to suit everyone, so I’ve just had to go with the date which scored the best, and that was Wednesday 24th April.
Hopefully those who can’t make it this time, may be able to do so if another one is held some time in the future.

Now what we have to decide is where to meet exactly and a time.
Is the Mitchell Library the best idea? On the steps?  Inside somewhere?
I’ve only been there once, so am not really very familiar with it.

As to the time, I think the earliest Judb and I can make it is about 11.30.

Let’s know what you think.

You've done a great job on this Dee.  Thank you.

Can I suggest we find a place where people can sit and wait for each other.  I have no idea where though  ???  You and I will only be there by 11.30 if the train is on time - due in at 11.02.

This will be an excellent outing!

Good idea, Judith.....but I need someone really familiar with Sydney and the Mitchell Library to suggest a place......maybe somewhere that folk could have a coffee or cuppa while they wait....especially if our train is late!   ::)

I think your train lands at central at 11.02....034 if late. You still have to get up to library so a 12.00noon (High Noon) appointment would be close. Glasshouse Cafe is at the library so it is pretty close.

As far as just meeting up goes, outside the older section of the library in Macquarie St there's a leafy area with seats. It's at the top of Hunter St, & adjacent to the entry to the newer section of the library. It's not under cover, though.
Hunter St runs abt 800m directly down to Wynyard Station btw

Neil, do you mean Cafe Trim?

Glasshouse comes up on google, but I think it's defunct. Trim'll have tea/coffee, so is another viable meeting point, particularly if it's wet, but as far as eating there goes, it's pretty small with a very limited menu.  There are other cafs close by.

That sounds like 2 possible options then, Ann. I'm sure Judith and I will be happy to meet everyone where you all think best.

Now there's a good thought, Muss.....maybe Loneybones, who's very clever with things like that, could make us a little RootsChat "label" we could wear....she could post a piccie on here that we could save and print, and fill in our names. When I see her online, I'll ask her.

User name or real name?

Hmm, 3 boys on a trampoline.... Are you sure it is only one small fracture :o

Umm wouldn't getting off a train at Martin Place be closest? Quite a few eateries there as well? How many are SUPPOSED TO BE GOING?

Cafe could be trim or could be anything, I haven't been to Macquarie Street in Yonks. Also I will use my own name, unless there are more Todd's going? ::) So if you see an Odd bloke you will know who he is ;D

If everyone who said they could come on Wednesday 24th April turns up, Neil, there'll be 11 of us....and make that 12 if Loneybones comes.

I'm leaving the place to meet up to everyone else. I'll just co-ordinate it on here.    ;)

I think Dee and i will be on the free bus LOL.  Not that we're cheapskates and very cross to find that it finishes at 3.30 so we may have to BUY a ticket to get back to Central  :o I think it goes down Elizabeth St and George St.

I've checked with Google maps, Martin Place Rail Station is closest. But from memory trains go round the Circle to get there. You can walk up Martin Place to MacQuarrie St then down to the State Library/Mitchell Library.
Both cafes appear to be there, the Sydney phone book would be handy for that.
I haven't checked the date yet, so can't say just now if I'll be there.
Leonie.

Title: Re: Mini-Meet in Sydney?
Post by: Deb D on Sunday 10 March 13 10:28 GMT (UK)
I'm not 100% sure but I suspect Martin Place station is actually on the Eastern Suburbs line and not on the City Circle - so you probably have to change trains to get there

I usually get off at St James, and take the pleasant walk along Macquarie Street.  Along the way I get to look in at St Stephen's Uniting Church, which was the parish church for sailors and trainees on the Sobraon (aka HMAS Tingira), and carries a large marble honour roll in the foyer, detailing those parish members who died in WW1.

Fascinating; - I discovered the Church on my way to my first visit to the Library, and half an hour later discovered that one of my relatives had been Captain of the same vessel!

Now, err, afterwards, I want to hear chapter and verse from you all, and I hope you all have an absolutely fantastic time together, getting to know each other face to face and of course spoiling Mr Odd.

Alas, I can't make it on that day, but I will be thinking of you all.   My fingers will be crossed that it will be a fine autumn day, not a cloud in the sky, not too much traffic on the F3 or other roads, or not too many passengers on the trains, buses, ferries etc.

And that you don't get sidetracked and end up actually looking up records at the State Library, cause you definitely need far more than just one day there !

Bestest wishes from me to you all, and don't be afraid to walk up to total strangers and perhaps say these magic words:

"I am here to meet Dee and Judith"

and then listen for the reply

"That's Odd, so am I"

Do not tempt me or I will wear the bear outfit, my brand new sewing machine needs to sew something.   I have dressed a Merry-go-round, and a twin tub washing machine, (twin party) husband a Mullett, and Twin Peaks

Oh Muss - pleeeeease come in costume.  If not the bear then do recycle and come as half a twin-tub or as a mullet or a merry-go-round.  I can just picture you on the train from Newcastle as half a twin-tub ... or a mullet ...  ;D

If you do I will come as a ginger-bearded multi-striped soccer player.

Of course we can trust each other ...  ;D

Great!  :D
Except it has to be smaller if you want it to fit in one of the name-tag-holders. If you do it that size it might need to be on card.
Or maybe some stationers store or print place could help, lots of them around.
I wouldn't mind paying a small price, you never know when/if you might need it again.  :D

I could shrink it to fit in one of those plastic name tag thingies....but then again, the larger one on card would really make us stand out, wouldn't it?    ???   ;D

great card LB!!   - I've saved it and been having fun - and learning a lot  - trying to make myself one - just in case I ever meet anyone!!    ;D ;D ;D

We have labels nearly that size at church and I hate them - too big!

But they'd be really good for a day like this!! -  and once you've made it it is easy enough to reduce the size a little to go in the card holders.

Wiggy who would love to be there!   I wonder if my free travel goes interstate - I haven't used it yet - just kidding - it doesn't!

you wouldn't miss each other and neither would anyone else!! :)

Here's another idea for a badge with logo, avatar and name:
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,629943.msg4820568.html#msg4820568

with an empty badge for you to add your name:

I use IrfanView to print them, and there is a facility to adjust the size, so once you know how big the card holder is, you can print it accordingly. (Probably other graphic programs have this option too, but IrfanView is my "standard" program :) )

I found my old photo programme adjusted the size quite easily and I now have a neat name  badge in one of those plastic holders.     :D

It's already in with the heap of bits and pieces I've been dumping on a spare bed ready to pack.   ;D

I think plain paper then laminate is another option. Any craft shop should have brooch pins to super-glue on the back. Then size wouldn't matter.

Finally got through to a person at Cafe Trim rather than an answering machine.    ::)
They don't take bookings, so although meeting there might be a possibility, as we'd be turning up in dribs and drabs I expect, eating there doesn't sound much of a possibility. We could be scattered all over the place, which defeats the purpose.

I've been googling cafes and and menus and I'm just totally confused. Some of them seem like they'd be very crowded and noisy.....even without us there! (As Martywillis warned.)
The Hyde Park Barracks Cafe looks like it might be OK, but the downloaded menu could be too expensive. Have a look and tell me what you think.
http://www.hydeparkbarrackscafe.com.au/

I have to admit I'm not very good at this aspect of the organising things in a reasonably strange city.    :-\
Maybe Loneybone's idea isn't silly! (Except it'd rain!)

If we're going to the Hyde Park Barracks cafe, ... then it might be more convenient to meet at the northern end of Hyde Park, rather than all the way down Macquarie Street at the Library.  There's an entrance to St James station at that end of the Park, just where Macquarie Street begins.  Would that be easier for everyone?  There's seating in the Park, too, so if anyone's there early .... ?

And I think your suggestion about where to meet is an excellent one, Deb.

STOP PRESS........

There's a hitch in the plans.....though we think we've sorted it!

Judith very kindly offered to phone the Hyde Park Barracks and the Sydney mint cafes. She spoke to the lady in charge and discovered that "we could hire a private dining room for $1500  :o
or take pot luck at the cafes.   :-\  "

Then Judith very kindly got in touch with the Australian Heritage Hotel.
http://www.australianheritagehotel.com/

She discovered the following....
"They have their  'ladies parlour' which will comfortably seat 14, 15 at a pinch. There is no cost to hire this room.  People can buy their own food/drink from the menu which looks to have mostly salads and pizzas and a few other things at reasonable prices. Photos of the room and the menu are on the website.  It's at 100 Cumberland St which is about 5 minutes walk from the Quay.  We can stay all afternoon."

Judith has booked it from 12 to 4, but if there are any violent objections, she can cancel the booking. It sounds great to us......pot luck at other places doesn't sound half as inviting.

"The Ladies Parlour" can be seen in the slide show under the Function tab, and an idea of the menu under the Eat tab.

It's at 100 Cumberland St, The Rocks cnr Gloucester St.  Googlemap will help you find it, although the exressway is over the top of the street so not 100% sure myself.  However it's just along from the YHA hostel at the Rocks and their website has an excellent map showing how to walk from Circular Quay and Wynyard.

http://www3.yha.com.au/uploadedFiles/Content/en/Australian_Hostels/NSW/Sydney_Surrounds/Sydney_Harbour_-_The_Rocks/sydney%20harbour%20yha_walking%20map_web3.pdf

Perhaps Neil will have to sit outside on the footpath (or in the bar) and we can pass things out to him LOL LOL  ::)  8)

Hope the change is ok with everyone - it was looking a bit dodgy to be able to sit and chat at one of the cafes.

Hi Nell.    :)

I think the map that Judith posted a link for indicates Wynyard station, although Circular Quay looks just as close. From Wynyard it appears a straight walk....from Circular Quay there'd be more corners to turn.

You're not a problem, surely?     ;)   ;D

We were trying to arrange to meet near the library, but it proved too difficult finding somewhere that would take a booking for the number that we are. We were told it would just be "pot luck" re seating. So when Judith found that we could book that room at the Australian Heritage Hotel for no cost, we thought that would solve the problem, as we'd all have somewhere to sit and chat and laugh and enjoy a meal together.

I doubt we'd have spent much time in the library somehow anyway.

Yes, Circular Quay is closer.  Doesn't much matter which station you get off at, though; - there may be some climbing uphill.  And I agree with Dee; there probably won't be much time for Library studies, with that many of us getting together (look out, Sydney!).

Neil, the Library was my initial suggestion as a meeting place, basically because my various-degree-cousins and I have met there in the past.  However, since finding a lunch venue near there was nigh on impossible ... the Australian Heritage Hotel sounds like it might be a better option.

There is a free bus no 555 that does a circular route from Central Station - Eddy Ave, up George Street, alight at Circular Quay, walk along Alfred Street until you come to Gloucester and Cumberland.  Or you could get off at Bridge Street walk up a little way to Grosvenor on your left, walk along until you come to Gloucester Street, follow it until you hit Cumberland Street. The bus does a circuit up and down George and Elizabeth Streets 9:30 to 3:30 weekdays.

YAY...looking forward to meeting you, little Nell  :)

Fingers crossed for those still uncertain about making it, or unable to join us due to more pressing circumstances.
Even in they're not present, "in the avoirdupois", as Mother Joseph Mary was so fond of saying,
we'll raise a toast for absent (on this occasion) friends, and look forward to meeting up next time.  ;D

Also looking forward to tomorrow ... Dee, do you think we need a recap of where and when, etc., just so's we, the unco-ordinated, don't have to search through all the pages, to make sure we're heading for the right place at the right time?

Okay, scratch that.  I realised, as I posted (above) that Dee might not have internet access ... so I went searching, "unco" though I am  ;D

The Ladies' Parlour at the Australian Heritage Hotel, 100 Cumberland St, is booked from 12 noon to 4pm, in the name of Judith Ballard.

Can't wait!

Definitely will not be attending, unfortunately :'(

Mates mothers funeral Woronora Friday, Wifes friends MIL just holding. Friend spent all last night at John Hunter, and will be returning here tonight for a sleep and going back to the hospital midday tommorow for a relief spell with other daughters in law.

The Lady had three sons and she has outlived all of them, they all died reasonably young. I think  it's sad when parents outsurvive their children. :'(

I will be thinking of you. ;D AND THE PAV'S Some pic's please ;D

Thanks for the summary posting of the where and when, Deb.....you were right .....I haven't had internet access until just now. It's the last thing to really get sorted for the granny flat.    :-\

Sorry you can't make it Neil, and I'm sure there'll be photos that we can at least share by email, as not everyone is prepared to have their photos posted on here. However, I'm also sure we can post photos of the pavs on here! Just hope they are not off the menu!   :o   :o

I'm so.o.o.o.o.o.o.o looking forward to tomorrow.....just hope the train stops for me at Bundanoon, and I manage to find Judith! I'm feeling a bit nervous about that.

Dee  ......about to go and organise her stuff for tomorrow.......    :)

Yes, they had a loo.  'T'was a tad dark in there, though.  They also had what seemed a more-than-lifesize painting of a nekkid lady, high on the wall ... in the Ladies' Lounge.  Go figure  :-\

'T'was a good place to meet, though; I walked up from Circular Quay, rather than catch buses or taxis ... not a long walk, but enough to create an appetite - and the Caesar salad was yummy!

Thought you might like to see what I wrote in an email to the Hotel who had asked for feedback:
Thank you so much for the use of the gorgeous Ladies' Parlor, yesterday.  Our group had a lovely day and the Parlor was perfect for our meeting.  Everyone enjoyed the food, almost too well some of us LOL.  Your staff are so lovely - every single one, from the person I phoned to book to the friendly, happy bar staff on yesterday made our day extra special.  The bar staff yesterday went out of their way to look after us - THANK YOU.

I will add my thoughts on enjoyment of the day, which was that I eagerly look forward to more of the same.  Unfortunately I had to depart early, but am glad all who attended continued to enjoy the occasion.  If you really want to have fun, just get a bunch of Rchatters together. ;D ;D

Glad you all had a great day! I certainly did, and it's wonderful to now put faces to the names on RootsChat. I've been anxiously awaiting an opportunity to grab a few moments on line, and have finally done so.

Judith, I'm sure we all echo your words in the email to the Australia Hotel. The venue couldn't have been better, and it's position enabled the last three of us to have a great wander around the "Big Dig" site.

As for the food........ooooooohhhhhhhh.........    ;D   ;D   ;D

I'm hoping to be back in NSW again later in the year, so I'd love for there to be another meet then.

Other than the pav my pics were all out of focus ...  oh yes the nude on the wall was in focus (thanks JM  :) ).  I guess the nude and the pav were the stationary aspects of the lunch - the rest were too animated and lively.  :)

cheers,
   Ros

Would any of the lunchees object if I posted a blurry pic of us ...  just to show the ambience? (having made sure that no name tags were visible)? I was thinking of an early one where we were still sober, sedate and seated. No not the one where we were imitating the painting - thought I'd save that one for facebook  ;D

Perhaps Ros could send a PM to Wiggy and LB with the fuzzy photos link  ;D  My OH wants to know if any of the RChatters ever looked as goodlooking as the nude above the door, so I guess that sort of guarantees that he will want to come and meet Mr ODD next time .... so perhaps I will finally get to meet Dee and thus finally meet an RChatter for the first time  ;D face to face ....  ::) .

I just thought, imagination is a wonderful thing, and having been a roots member for so long (!!)
I imagine what everyone looks like, as we used to do in RADIO only days.

And Rabbit b bless her,  eventually seeing her beautiful face.... was fantastic, cos she looked so like she did in my head xxx

Someone known to the Hotel needs to write to them and offer the famous RChatter service to find out everything significant about the nude lady and the artist who painted her.   Then we can all work our magic under Dee and Judith's directions  ;D

Hi,

I was off work from the mini-meet until today and so only just have decent internet access again.

I also would like to thank everyone for a wonderful day last week.  We should definitely do it again.

Thanks to Dee and Judb for the entertaining look around the Big Dig as well.

Debbie

PS I definitely ate all my pavlova and rocky road.  Very nice it was too!!
