Title: Parish's in Rochdale
Post by: sccond on Tuesday 12 February 13 18:01 GMT (UK)
Hi - does anyone have a suggestion as to Parish's to look for records if they are not found at St. Chad's or St. Bartholmew's in Whitworth? They would be living in Bridge Mill so something in that area? For example, in 1847 Amelia and Eli Bentley.  I see their registration on LancashireBMD; just trying to see where/if they were baptized.  Same with some of their siblings.

Thanks as always, Lisa

Yes I use that site, but the only Parish that comes up under rochdale is St. Chads.  What I'm wondering is what other parishes in neighboring areas might have been used by someone living in Bridge Mill. I'm just not sure where else to look.

thanks, Lisa

Hi,
Allan, for Bridge Mill read Whitworth.

Lisa, for my own family who lived there in the same time frame they used a variety of churches for baptisms.  St. Bartholomews, Whitworth, Hallfold Presbyterian (also known as Hall Street) and even St. John the Evangelist, Bacup.  I think they just liked a change of scenery! or they were trying to please all the family.

Hallfold can be found on family search.

Thanks.  Will look into them.  And I see Mo clarified Whitworth. And as far as Eli, I'm not sure. His mother's maiden name is Scholfield. And at the same time (this is from LancashireBMD) is Amelia Bentley.  I know Amelia is "mine" as I had ordered the cert; I hadn't noticed Eli at the time. But I never saw a baptism for Amelia. So now I am wondering if Eli is sibling (twin?) or belongs to someone else.  I was hoping to find the church where they were baptized, if they were, to see mothers first name.  I'm looking for William and Mary as parents.

I'll have to try to find what Martha Doctor married.

Just looked and it looks like he married Martha Brindle. So that would not be the same Eli.

Cheers, Lisa

Hi,
Have you tried St Clements church near Spotland Bridge (ie Bridge Mill?), Rochdale. It was built in 1835 so it could have been there.

Karen

I think you are correct that Amelia and Eli were twins.  Their reference numbers are consecutive on Lancashirebmd. Did it have a time of birth written on Amelias birth certificate?

Mo - it says 8hr 4 min am.  Why would that matter??

and Karen - I have seen the name St Clement's, but I'm not sure where to find their records online?? That does seem like it would be a good option..

Thanks again!! Lisa

Ahhhh!   I asked because it was only usual to add the time of birth to a certificate when it was a twin  ;D

Lisa,
Did William Bentley and Mary Schofield get married at St Chad's in 9 Nov 1828?

Could this be their first child?
Baptism: 9 Sep 1829 St Bartholomew, Whitworth
Mary Ann Bentley
Daughter of William Bentley & Mary
Tongend Bridge

And is this your Mary?
Burial: 28 Oct 1849 St Bartholomew, Whitworth
Mary Bentley -  Age: 40
Millhouse

I don't think the St Clements records are online but Whitworth Library does local research or Touchstones Arts and Heritage in Rochdale may be able to help?

Regards
Karen

Karen - yes that is the family. I'm pretty good on a lot of it thanks to lots of help here:)  There are still some gaps; missing baptisms and NOTHING on son Richard born abt 1845. Can't even find the birth registered (unless it it one of the ones not in Rochdale).

Thanks!  Lisa

Wow Karen. Thanks!  I'm not sure what to ask for though; don't really know what would be available. Maybe if I can figure out something specific I'll let you know.  That would be great as I am in the US.

Thanks agian Karen!  Lisa

Hi Lisa,

I have just noticed that daughter Peggy was baptised at Hallfold in 1832, but after checking the film on Family Search it only goes up to 1837.

Hi Mo - I had not been able to find her baptism before.  I have her burial that year at St. Chad.  I tried to find Hallfold yesterday on familysearch but had no luck.  I'll try again now using Peggy. So maybe they used Hallford for some of the "missing" baptisms.

Thanks!  Lisa

Mo - Just found it on Familysearch. Do you suppose that later years for Hallfold can be found anywhere else?

Thanks!  Lisa

also found an interesting "Joshua and Betty" family; St. Mary, Bury.  Have to try to find their marriage to see if it could be a Joshua of mine.

Hi Lisa,

I can`t find any later records for Hallfold. I am not sure where they would be.

You can see where Hall St or Hallfold was on here:

http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/LAN/Whitworth/

Underneath the Church Records is "location of the churches marked on a map".  Click on this and when the map appears Hallfold is the dark blue No.3.

Regards,

Mo

Mo,

Thanks!  Great map.  I've been trying to find some of these churches and the relationship between them with no luck.  Just didnt know where to look.  That was great; could find St. Chad when I pulled out to 3 miles.

I might put a post out if anyone knows where later Hallford records might be?

thanks again, Lisa
