Now off to see who is around in 1871 (you may have done this, details would be helpful!)

Was he the William who was acquitted for sheep stealing/ receiving in 1861, expect he did not always want to know where the meat came from being a butcher. Sounds familiar today!!!

This is a possible for 1871 (unless of course he has been transported for sheep stealing!)

RG10 1127 56 26

Alfred Street, Portsea

Indexed Channy,

William  32 (though age unclear) Excavator ...something.... bn Dorset
ELizabeth 34 bn Dorset
then an unclear comment that begins "not at home ......"

thanks to all who replied, where did the sheep stealing come from ? can't find a reference.
Portsea would be too young, the baptism date is correct and true, the 1861 census would be interesting but I can't find on GRU.
Thanks all
