In Ward's Directory of Newcastle-on-Tyne, 1916 the Registrars of Marriages were at 127 Pilgrim Street, and 22 Dean Street. The Superintendent Registrar was at 127 Pigrim Street. There were Registrars in other districts;
All Saint's, 135 Portland Road
Byker & Heaton, 26 Heaton Road
St. Andrew's & Jesmond, 50 Leazes Terrace
Elswick, 32 Meldon Street
St. Nicholas' & Westgate, 305 Westgate Road.
Benwell, 130 Atkinson Road.

Hi Stan
Thank you for the ultra fast reply.
Can you work out which office on your list it is from this info ?
In April 1920, the Registrar was T. W. Ferguson
and Deputy Superintendent Registrar C. W. Anderson also signed !

Once again Stan, thanks for the info.
Just for the record ( and curious Trini ) Jan's grandparents died when she was a very young girl.
We know very little about them. The marriage cert of 1920 has George living at Pont St, Stepney
( in the area between the river and Byker Bridge, now long gone ) and Elsie was living in Maughan St in Benwell also long gone.
We live a long way from the Tyneside area so we now want to try and find photos of the two streets and the registry office in which they married.
All the best wishes, Downswilliam

You can see the Register Office, 127 Pilgrim Street at http://www.old-maps.co.uk/maps.html?=425064,564226 on the 1896 Town Plan, marked as the Poor Law Union offices.
