Title: Berwick Look up Please
Post by: raewyngillian on Monday 11 February 13 21:58 GMT (UK)
I dont know if this is the correct Forum to post this but if someone is going into the berwick archives ny time soon could they please do a lookup for me?
I am searching for the birth of Isabella Thompson born 1804 Berwick according to various Cenci.  I'm also looking for her marriage to Joseph  Weatherston, date unknown.

Joseph was a Slater in Northumberland.

I can find this couple in the Cenci but I can't find any births or marriages.

I would love to find Isabella's parents.

Cheers

don't forget Berwick on the records doen't nescessarly mean Berwick-upon-Tweed Northumberland its more likely to mean Berwickshire in the Scottish Borders

Berwickshire ranges from Mertoun in the west to the east coast and Coldstream in the South and Cockburnspath in the North and all in between - its a very big county

it a good idea the check both side of the Borders

Hi

Further to Terianne's posting, both Isabella and Joseph were down as being born Berwick on Tweed on the 1851 census HO107/458/38  They seem to have lived in Berwick on Tweed throughout. Berwick on Tweed is in Northumberland, England.

Hi again

There is quite an extensive online tree with photographs and details of his probate entry (in Newcastle), etc. (Dickinson Family Tree)

If you have a sub to Ancestry or log on to Mundia, you would be able to view it. No info on the marriage or Isabella's parents, though.

I'm not sure if you've seen the probate record for Isabella. She died 29 March 1888 at Berwick upon Tweed and Probate was granted on 19 April 1888,  Newcastle upon Tyne.  Personal Estate was £2808. 19.6

Hi to all who have replied thus far.

I have searched intensely for this family for many years and have seen the " Weatherston" family tree on Ancestry, and have copies of the photos of Joseph and Isabella.  I have sent away for a copy of Isabella's Will and am still awaiting its arrival.

The main thing I want is to know Isabella's parents names as I cannot continue my search until I have these names….particularly the mother's name.

I have three families - Paxton - Hogarth - and Thompson which are all related in some way and everywhich way I look I cannot find out the parents names.

Hence my request for someone to go and look at the books  ( BDM's)which I believe are held by the Berwick on Tweed Council??

I am getting closer to blindness as the months go on and would love to solve this mystery before I cant see at all.

Cheers

Gillie

Hi
You need a look up at parish registers for Berwick to see if you can pick up the baptism.  They will be at the local archives office and unless there are transcripts it means searching the film of the register.  You can get the film to search at your nearest LDS family history centre.  They are worldwide.  That might be difficult if your sight is failing.
Are you a member of the Northumberland Family History Group?  http://www.ndfhs.org.uk/  It will be worth looking at their website and also Genuki which has links to a marriage index etc.
http://www.genuki.bpears.org.uk/NBL/   I may have that on fiche - will check later.

Hi sillgen,

I used to belong to that group but now that I can't read their newsletters....the printing is too small....I am stuck.  I have purchased various fiche and disks but have found nothing.

Someone suggested asking for a lookup so this was my last hope.   I can but hope someone may find the answer and send me an email.

Cheers

Just to add that I looked through Ancroft and Tweedmouth*(which are neighbouring parishes) on the Durham BTs yesterday, but nothing showing.

The Durham Diocese Marriage Bonds are also there but there are far too many to look through.  I'll PM a couple of people who go to the archives occasionally to see what they can do.

As far as I can tell, they had no children, so it's difficult to get a rough estimate of their marriage date.

I have the fiche of Durham marriages but not Northumberland.  Annoying.  If they did not have children why is it so important to trace them back?

The Durham Diocese Marriage Bonds would contain the Northumberland parishes so if Gillie could get someone to look through them online - they might be there - big ask though

Hi again Sillgen,

It's important to me because I have Will docs that state my gt gt grandfather received several inheritenses.....one from a Christina Hogarth who stated that he was her second cousin.

The Weatherstons also benefitted from the Will as relations.

The Thompson family were also related to the Hogarths and all 3 were meant to be related...the Paxtons, the Thompsons, and the Hogarths.....but I have never found the link.  An ancestor said that Mrs Thompson, Isabella's mother was said to be a Hogarth but until I can locate Isabella's parents I can't go any further.

That's why it's I importent to me....just a family mystery.

Have you followed up the executors of Isabella's will- John Moffett, Berwick, Accountant, William James Paxton, Croydon, Draper and John Knox Weatherhead, Berwick, Solicitor. Although the other two could be her financial/legal advisors, could the William Paxton be a relative?

There is a William J Paxton on the 1891 in Croydon - 60 George Street.  Aged 61 and a Manufacturer's Agent - textiles, born Berwick on Tweed. Wife, Anne, down as a Draper. RG12/590/166/72

PS - 1881 is at RG11/813/60/18

The 1871-1891 wife,  Anne, would appear to be a second wife. First son too old to be her's.

I have found this marriage  in West Hackney, 1857-  William James Paxton, a warehouse man, Father - John Paxton, draper.

The reason i asked about siblings is
My Thompson's come from Berwick and Spittal

John was born at Scremerston son of James Thompson born Hurne Roxburghshire 1833-34
I have nothing else on James other than an old family photo of 4 generations James being the eldest one on it

I have his death certificate also his wife's Martha Lountain

Hi Elizabeth

I'm now after the William Paxton, executor - may give us a lead!

In 1861, William James is down as John J RG9/229/8/13  (born Berwick) and  married to and Adelaide E(mma Smith - from marriage entry) who is down as born Rothbury.

Western Lane, Berwick

Mary Hogarth, married, 70, annuitant
Isabella Paxton, daughter, widow, 49, Proprietor of House

So William Paxton was Mary Hogarth's grandson.

Hi Jennifer

Thanks for drawing my attention to some of the other threads earlier.  I've been checking up on the info contained in them and some that I've put here is different or additional but I'm not sure where Gillie got info on Isabella's father being a blacksmith - nothing in the B on T directory of 1806  :-\

From other thread:

Familysearch has an Isabella Thompkins, born 31/1/1804 and christened 18/2/1805, Chapel Street or Shaws Lane or Relief Chap, United Berwi, Berwick upon Tweed (batch no C080401). That's the closest I can find on line

I did see a Tompkins (smith)  in the directory but it will take me a while to find it again  ::)

From this thread: http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,414531.msg2808773.html#msg2808773

Isabella Thompson married Joseph Weatherston.  She was the daughter of Thompson the blakcsmith from Western Lane and her mother was a Hogarth.

Hi Everyone,

What a wonderful lot you are!!  Yes William James Paxton, Croydon is my GT GT Grandfather
Adelaide Emma Smith, his Wife.  1861 census the John James Paxton as head of the house is INCORRECT - should be Wm James Paxton.  John James Paxton, the son,  is my Gt Grandfather.  There also shows a Mary Hogarth as being William James Paxton's grandmother in the 1861 census but I dont know if that is her married name or her birth name….born 1777 Srouston RoxBurgh
The William James Paxton is the one who has had several inheritances
Mary Hogarth shows in previous censi with her daughter Isabella Paxton, who married John Paxton.  He died 1839.  BUT Isabella Paxton's previous name was Isabells JAMES..and I cant connect Mary Hogarth to any Mr James….but all of this is going on a slightly different track. I have Mary Hogarth's death cert but it gives no other info at all.  Cant find any Will. And I cant find any MR Hogarth.

If anyone would like copies of the Christina Hogarth Will I am happy to send it if it would be of help.

I am most grateful for all your assistance

Gillie

The Info on Isabella's father being a blacksmith was written down by an ancestor who visited berwick on Tweed from NZ…." Mr Thompson was a blacksmith who lived in Western Lane". She also wrote that "Isabella's mother was said to be a Hogarth"

Hi Everyone,
Yesterday I found an online book called the Law Advertiser.  It appears to be printed every year in the 1830's and this vol is vol 9 for 1831.Here are the following extractions -
Paxton John, the younger, formerly of Berwick Upon Tweed,Linen Draper, but lately of 22 Ironmonger Lane, in the city of London. To surrender May 10, May 17 and June 10 C.C.R.
PetCred Thomas Hogarth of Etal, Northumberland, schoolmaster, now residing at 26 Golden Lane, Middlesex. Seal April 23

There is another listing with almost the same words.

Then the third lisitng is as follows -
Under the heading "Assignees Chosen"
Paxton John.....James Hogarth of Etal, Northumberland, schoolmaster, and Mary Hogarth, of Hay Farm, Northumberland, Spinster. Dated May 17

This looks like John Paxton owed money to the Hogarths as creditors??

Im wondering if this Mary Hogarth would be the mother of Isabella James (who may be illegitimate??) and who married John Paxton......making Mary Hogarth William James Paxton's grandmother?/
Would James Hogarth be her broither??father??

Going back to the original query I looked for a marriage between Isabella and Joseph in Berwick PRs from 1814 to 1830 but didn’t find one.  Then I checked the Northumberland marriage index from 1813 - 1837 and they are not anywhere in the county within that time frame.

It’s possible that they married late in life which would account for the lack of children - what year is your first sighting of them as a couple?

Christine

PS forgot to look for her baptism  :-[  will do that next week
