My paternal grandmother was born Annie Coxon in 1888 in Sculcoates. There are two! I spent some time assuming that she was from the family of Charles Frederick Coxon. However, I eventually found a death for this Annie in 1889. By default, the only possibility is Annie Mary EA Coxon, but I can't find anything about her in eg the 1891 and later censuses. I would be grateful for any guidance from the people on the spot. Mike George

Do you know anything about her marriage - you may have to get a certificate to get her father's name to help you. There is a possibility that she went by another surname, for instance if her mother married after her birth.
-
Thanks for your reply. I have my gran's wedding cert, but a line is drawn through father's details. This was the major problem in finding her, since she said she was born in Hull! There must be a mystery.

Annie Mary was registered in the Drypool sub-district.
what witness names are on her marriage certificate?
What address did she wed from?
Pauline

Kenmeeks, Thanks - good to know there are still Coxons about. This may be useful when I can establish what my connections are.
-
PaulineJ Thanks for the reply. My grandmother was married in Stockton-on-Tees on Jan 1 1906, at 18yo. This is the only time I've found her after her birth. Witnesses were named Guymer, from Middlesbrough, so not much use, I suspect. She and my g-father both gave the address of 29 Parliament St, S on T. This may be a lodging house - he is a 36yo marine engineer: she may be a servant or working somewhere - ongoing enquiry. No trace of her in 1891 or 1901 census. MJG

Then the best thing would be to find out what parental info is on the 1888 birth certificate.

Birth cert for Annie Mary EA Coxon received. She was born on 8/10/88 at 9 Marvell St, Drypool. Registered by Sarah Ann Atkin (present at birth). By 1891, the Atkin's have taken Annie in. She is described as niece, with Atkin as surname (the A on her birth cert). Mother, Emma Coxon, was domestic servant and unmarried. No trace anywhere for her in 1891. Sarah Atkin, unfortunately, died in 1897 and in 1901 her widower is living with his brother, with no sign of Annie. In 1901, however, I noticed an Emma Coxon getting married to Joseph Godfrey in Stockton on Tees, some 90 miles away. This is where my grandmother Annie lived, in later years. In the 1891 census for Godfrey, Annie is listed as a Godfrey daughter, so in some way mother and daughter were reunited.
In her life, Annie was born as Coxon, then lived as Atkin and Godfrey, changed back to Coxon for her marriage, then became my Grandma George. Even later, she remarries as Waugh. No wonder she took some finding, originally! The search is now on to sort out Emma Coxon, who always said she came from New York in Lincs. From what I can see, this consists of a crossroads with a Methodist Chapel.. No trace of Emma's birth - I can't even find which reg district applies. She is along way from Humberside. Next Challenge! Many thanks for your help. Hope the tale is of interest. MJ George

You may have to widen the spelling of Coxon when going backwards.
I will help as this is complicated due to spellings;

I'm having trouble linking Albert to Sarah Atkin - given he appears to be Emma's brother in law there should be one, for Annie to be vaguely a niece. You say Sarah has taken Annie in by 1891, but I can't find them on the census to make sure which Sarah I'm looking for
-
Many thanks Trish & Mabel. I need a large piece of paper and some hours to try to sort out all your info on the Lincs Coxons and Atkins! One quick point to Mabel - William and Sarah A Atkin are at 9 Sutton Terr Studley St Southcoates in 1891 with Annie [RG12/3923, p26]. I've just noticed that Sarah gives New York as her birthplace, so there is some tie-up with Emma. I've tried to find Sarah getting married as Coxon, but without success to date. More later.

That's odd - they're not showing up on Ancestry under that ref.
However - I think this may be the marriage
Mar 1887 Hull 9d 315
ATKIN William <<<<
Crombie Edward
DAFT Sarah Ann <<<<<
Middleton Mary Hannah
Daft being Emma's mother's maiden name - making Annie her great niece
Weirdly the two Atkin connections seem unconnected. If William is the chap I think I can see in later censuses he's from Lancashire, whilst Emma's brother in law Albert is a Lincolnshire Atkin
