Post by: pkincaid on Monday 11 February 13 04:18 GMT (UK)
Does anyone know where I can find a list of ministers of Douglas, Lanarkshire in the 1600s?

Try the Fasti Ecclesiae Scoticanae online.

I am looking for sources other than the Fasti.  Perhaps a church history listing.

The Fasti should list all the 17th century ministers of the parish. Are you looking for someone in particular?

I believe that the Fasti either has an ommission or more likely an error.  It has Peter Kid as succeeding Archibald Inglis in 1654.  I have a record that shows that the minister of Douglas in 1656 was Peter Kincaid.  So they either omitted him or more likely Peter Kid was given in error for Peter Kincaid.  I am interested in what other lists are saying.  I am interested in the list of ministers as during that time relatives tended to succeed one another.

This could open up a whole can of worms in that some Kidds in contemporary records might be Kincaids.

What is your source for Peter Kincaid as minister? If you think the Fasti are wrong, you would have to look at the minutes of the Kirk Session or, if they don't survive, the minutes of the Presbytery. They would both mention a new minister. There might be something in the likes of the Register of Sasines as well.

PK,  check out,    http://drmarkjardine.wordpress.com/    and see what he has on the parish of Douglas, very interesting stuff on the turmoil in that area at the time, when ministers were being separated from their kirks and took to the hills.

GR2: My source is the baptism of his namesake, Peter Kincaid, son of John Kincaid and Issobel Wast, in Edinburgh Parish on 24 April 1656.  You can see the actual record in a brief writeup at http://www.kyncades.org/Kid.pdf.

Rev Peter Kidd was imprisoned at Bass Rock for repeatedly to recognise CHARLES 11 as head of the church.
His grave can be found in Carluke churchyard.

This can be found at discover the covenanters in Lanarkshire

What are you trying to say Skoosh?

As I said in my linked article, I am not claiming that Rev. Peter Kincaid of Douglas is the same person as Rev. Peter Kidd of Carluke.  There is no question that it was Peter Kincaid at Douglas.  Whether he went on to Carluke is another matter.  Personally I don't believe that he did.  Someone just merged the two.

I should add that Kincaids were part of the Covenanter movement.  Thomas Kincaid was a surgeon in Alexander Leslie's Covenanter army and he was given command of two regiments prior to the Battle of Marston Moor in 1644.  Furthermore, in 1684, John Kincaid of Chalcharoch, Mochrum Parish was tried and transported for his Covenanter beliefs.
