I'm looking for anyone who has any information or any possible relation to Arnold W Wedd, born Aug 1918 (registered sept quarter).
I believe his mother could be Bertha Webb and had Arnold unmarried prior to later marrying in Sept 1918 to Christopher Pallett.
Arnold is one of a few contenders for being the illegitimate son of my gt uncle Edward Cooke who died in ww1 before he could return home to marry his pregnant girlfriend. I know the girlfriend was called Bertha and she later married 'a nice man' after her son was born. I also know the child survived.
This has also been discussed in 2 further posts about Edward Rowland Cooke/unmarried mothers in 1918.

I've only put them as seperate posts so they will stand out as individual names if someone else has a personal interest in the name/surname.

Webb, not Wedd, I think. Nothing listed here:

Why not send for his birth cert? That wil confirm if his mum is a Bertha or not.
And give address etc where he was born, you can see if that ties up with any other evidence you have.
If you dont have any other evidence, then you are probably wasting your time - I'm sure there was more than one Bertha's having illegitimate children around that time and it would be all too easy to latch on to tbe wrong one.
(I havent read the other threads, so dont know what other info you have got)

I can search for birth records and I have been buying copies of records for some of the other possible names I have tried to narrow it down to based on some of the criteria I know is correct, but I also thought putting a request out on here might uncover info, but I find some of the replies read as being a little negative as if I am doing things wrongly or shouldn't be requesting info on the off chance someone else might have the same research interests. I can't afford to buy records every month so I have been doing so little and often.

According to his death index entry, Arnold's date of birth was 28 Aug 1918 - does that help?
Death Jan/Feb/Mar 1971
Gosport
6b 1032
Arnold William Webb age 52 dob 28 Aug 1918
I dont think it is a case of you doing something 'wrong' - but multiple threads about the same thing can be really annoying! Firstly no-one wants to be flitting from one to another in order to get te whole picture, so you may be missing out on help. Secondly someone can spend ages looking something up or pursuing a lead, only to find later someone else has done exactly the same on another thread.
Secondly it is always a sensitive area, researching involving the father of an illegitimate child, unless there is documentary evidence of paternity. There is always a high risk that the wrong man may be linked to the wrong child, and then if people perpetuate that by passing down or spreading around family trees, it is hardly fair on the memory (and descendents) of either party.
Hope that has explained the perceived "negativity"

I don't know if this is of any help, but my Father was John William Webb born in Camberwell 1927-1984 died in Gosport and his parents were Alfred John Webb 1889-1955 and Bertha Hills May 1891-1933. I knew nothing about my Fathers family history, he never spoke of them, must have had a family fall out at some stage! After he died however, details started to come to light, he had been married before, there was a son involved, but the story I was told by a friend of my father was that it wasn't his child, but his brothers, who had an affair with my Father's wife while he was away serving in the army, this led to my fathers divorce. He married my mother Joan Rosina Hedley 1954. Now I can find no record of this brother but I am assuming that he was older than my father as Bertha died when my father was six. We lived in Gosport too, near to my mothers family Hedley. Maybe Arnold is this older brother? Does any of this tie up with your findings?
