Title: Confusion over Deborah Akerman.
Post by: Foz on Sunday 10 February 13 15:26 GMT (UK)
Help Please!!!!!

William Bateman b.c.1811 Cumnor, Oxon. married Mary Sherwood b.c.1814 Cumnor, Oxon. at Cumnor on 22 Nov 1835.

I'm trying to find their parents and I'm getting rather confused.
I can find William's parents as William Bateman b.c.1785 and Deborah Akerman b.c.1783. and
I can find Mary's parents as William Sherwood b.c.1772 and Deborah Akerman b.c.1785.

I've tried to research the two Deborahs but they seem to be the same person!   Can anyone help me
sort this problem out please?    Did she have two marriages on the go at the same time?!!!   :-\
Many thanks for your help.

Hi Foz ...

Where did you "find" the references to the two Williams and Deborahs?

This will really only be resolved by finding the baptism records of William (jnr.) and Mary.  Luckily, the Cumnor baptisms are on Family Search (Batch No. C160771) and there you will find Mary SHERWOOD's baptism in 1814, daughter of William and Deborah, plus some other siblings.  William SHERWOOD and Deborah AKERMAN married at Oxford (St. Peter B) on 13 NOV 1803 (Source:  OFHS Oxfordshire Marriage Index 1538-1837).

I cannot see a baptism for William BATEMAN (jnr.) in Cumnor, but there is a Joseph BATEMAN baptised in 1818, son of William and Frances.  His parents' marriage is not on the OMI, but may be included in the OFHS's North Berkshire MI (which covers those counties originally in Berkshire but transferred into Oxfordshire in the 1970s).  Contacting the OFHS for a look up of this marriage may give you further clues to follow regarding William's baptism.

Hi Foz

Just looked at the OFHS CD for Cumnor and there isn't a William Bateman baptism  listed until 1877 - so I agree with the info Pennie has written - Hi Pennie.

The witnesses at this wedding were; Elizabeth Sherwood and John Smith and it was after Banns and they were both entered as otp

Frances Bateman Widow married 7 Oct 1822 to Richard Lambourn a Widower.

Good luck

Hi Pennie and NDRFT,

Thanks for your help.
I was given the info by a distant family member who has just started genealogy research, and I assumed it was correct.
I couldn't actually find Deborah married to William Bateman, but did find her married to William Sherwood.
Now I have to find William Bateman's (1811)mother, and, also, was his father was really William Bateman (1785).

Thanks again.

Hi Foz ...

Glad we could be of help - but never ... ever ... ever ... "assume" when doing family history! :)

You may find the Cumnor village website (http://www.bodley.ox.ac.uk/external/cumnor/) of interest, although I'm afraid that all it does is confirm that there don't seem to be any BATEMANs in the parish before the 1840s.

The 1851 census records that William was born in c1811 in Cumnor, Berkshire.  The Oxfordshire FHS have a Baptism Index (1538-1851) that includes most of the current parishes (including those transferred from Berkshire in the 1970s).  For a small fee you can request a look up and this may be the best way of locating William (see "Search Services" on their website at www.ofhs.org.uk).

The 1851 census records that William was born in c1811 in Cumnor, Berkshire.

If you jump ahead to 1861 (RG9/0733/12/17), William is still in Cumnor with Mary and children, but his birthplace is shown as 'Oxon, Windlebury'.

Wendlebury PRs (OxFHS CD HED-01) have this baptism:
31 March 1811    BATEMAN  William      s. William and Frances

However there's no marriage listed for William (sen) and Frances.

Hope this helps :)

Hi Foz ...

It was really only a very light tap on the wrist!  I'm sure that all us "veterans" on here have been guilty of assuming something at one time or other.  It's just that we know (from personal experience) the problems that it can cause, so we try and give a warning to take care. :)

Good luck with your research.
