Title: Searching for Lillian Margaret Newnham from Guisborough area
Post by: wecamefrom on Thursday 07 February 13 18:42 GMT (UK)
Wondering if anyone can help me find my g-g-aunt Lillian Margaret Newnham was born in Guisborough / SKelton / Marske in Yorkshire in 1879.
Her parents were William Essex Newnham and Margaret Gill who came to Yorkshire from Woolwich, London in the 1870s.

Lillian is present in 1881 and 1891 census but I cannot find any record of her at all after that.

But from family photos, letters and belongings I know she was still alive right into the 1930s - I just don't know what she
was doing or where she was.

She is quite a distinctive and striking figure in her photos and from the postcards and gifts she sent her sister's family
seems a fascinating character.  I would really love to find out more.

Would be really grateful for some fresh eyes on the search.

There's a bit more information about her on my blog in case that helps

Unfortunately all the post marks are illegible - she doesn't talk about herself in the postcards just about what her nieces and nephews have been up to so no clues there either  :(

If she was married - you would expect her to be talking about her own children/grandchildren - not her nieces and nephews.

Getting desperate now - any views etc on the postcards or are they just the plain white ones with nothing on the front

There's a Lilian Newsham boarding with John William Sturdy and family in Easingwold in 1901. She is a 'grocer and spirit merchant's clerk' aged 20 born in Saltburn. She's transcribed as Lilian Newham (though looks like Newsham on image) piece RG13/4544/52/13

There's a marriage between Gustav E PERLISH and Lilian NEWHAM in Scarborough in last quarter 1910. I have found them in 1911 census but can't post detail here. I don't know what information is available in the free index so better not post anything. Hopefully you will have access to 1911 to check it out yourself. Looks promising though. From FreeBMD you will see they had a son born in South Shields in 1911.

Will check it out right now - don't have anything else to support yet but the 1901 record definitely looks promising.

Had a look at the 1911 Census and birthplace and birth date wrong for Lillian.  Am seeing what else I can find to support the 1901 reference in Easingwold

Hi
I have Lilian Edith Newham on my tree she was born in Scarborough to John Frank Newham and Elizabeth Green  .  Lilian married Gustav Edward Perlish and they moved to South Shields where they had 2 children but when the WW1 started Gustav who was German was we belive sent to  the Isle of man . Lilan returned to Scarborough and Gustav was never seen again.
I have gone back to Henry 1772 born in Scarborough so looks like a different side of the family,

Jayby.

She died in 1935 in Dumfries, Scotland.

If you purchase some credits you can view a copy of her death certificate.   Lilian Newnham died 20/11/1935 at Crichton Royal Instn., Dumfries.   Usual residence given as 4 Newhouse Road, Esh Winning, Co. Durham - shown as single, aged 56, Secretary.   Scottish death certificates show parents names and this confirms that this is your Lilian.

Oh you are an absolute star Annette - the Esh Winning address is spot on. I haven't had a chance to get on Roots Chat for ages because of work but this is brilliant. Thank you.
