Competition:  Free Tickets for WDYTYA Live 2013

We are so excited to take part, for the first time, in the "http://www.whodoyouthinkyouarelive.com" Live exhibition at London’s Olympia – Come and see us! We will be on Stand 402. An easy reference map of exhibitor stands is at www.rootschat.com/links/0su3/

The exhibition spans three days, Friday 22nd February, Saturday 23rd February and Sunday 24th February.

The site www.whodoyouthinkyouarelive.com is great with lots of info on events, speakers and what to do when you are there.

Scrimnet, co-moderator on the RootsChat Armed Forces board will also be there, on the Army Photo ID desk, see www.whodoyouthinkyouarelive.com/about-show/photography-gallery

We have seven tickets we would like to give away. These are day passes for any one of the three exhibit days. We would love to share these with some of you.

If you would like a ticket then:

We would like you to tell us (reply below), in no more than three sentences why you enjoy being part of RootsChat and why it's worth joining in.

The Competition will run until Midnight Sunday 10th February. The moderating team will pick the seven winners. The winners will be contacted by myself for postal details, and successful winners' tickets will be posted out on Wednesday 13th February allowing them to arrive before the event.

But if you are planning to go anyway…we look forward to seeing all of you there.

I have found so many new friends here on rootschat although i haven't  been in the chat room for some time. It's great to be able to help each other find out about our family history and even to find distant family members!

Being part of Rootschat is like being part of a big family.
Not only does it give me access to a huge database of family tree "brains" for free, it also provides a shoulder to cry on when required.
I would be lost without the help of Rootschat and all of its members.

through rootschat i found a previously unknown relative in australia.

my experience has helped other rootschatters, particularly overseas, to add to or complete their family search.

in return i have had extensive benefit from chatters experience that has taken my research back over 200 years, awesome, free, friendly advice. can i buy the t-shirt?

Since joining RootsChat, from being the family member with least knowledge about my family, I am now the one who knows most. More seasoned members, despite my initial naivity in genealogy, not only sought answers for me, but taught me to search for myself.

Since joining rootschat I have come across the most helpful bunch of people ever, who go out of their way with their knowledge and resources to help in any way they can.
I have found distant relatives that I was unaware of, and found out so much about my family which was previously unknown to me.  It has given me many hours of pleasure.

Hi All

 I would like a very simple Thank You to all at Rootschat, with out you guys i would still be going round in circles.

 As it stands i am now at Birkbeck University London studying Genealogy, i have just completed my 1st Module and got 63% on my 1st essay and 58% on a piece of course work, Rootschat is included in my essay, so a much appreciated Thank You to Trystan.

for settling up this site and leading us all into the world of our past history and on to the road of writting the stories if our Ancestors, but we have have to break down a few Brick walls along the way and find a good few skeletons in our cupboards.

I shall be at Olympia on 23rd so shall make my self known at the stand. And if by any chance someone finds my GT GT Grandfather Arthur Ender grab him for me, his death is very elusive.

And this is my entry for an extra ticket...lol

Think I will be cheeky and add something

I would love a ticket, I did look for the RC stand the last time you said you were going to be there years ago now but sad that all I found was an empty table because other reasons got in the way and you were not able to attend.
If I stopped by your stand, I might even be persuaded to give a demo or two to give a heads up to the restore board.
Hopefully I would meet up with some of the lovely people who I wouldn't have otherwise met through Rootschat.

Dear trystan,

Does your free WDYTYA tickets come with two aeroplane tickets for me and mine, a hotel room at the Ritz,  a nice dinner of roast beef and vege with yorkshire pudd, a free car to get round all the sites mentioned in the WDYTYA conferences.
A bonus ticket for the ballet or like,    free transit to and from Heathrow and a few hundred quid for miracles of consumerism along the way?????

Tis a long way from the land down under to get there......

I have lived on three continents and now reside ‘Down Under’. Of my ancestors I knew next to nothing. With two unfamiliar family names passed on to my mother by a professional researcher I searched the internet and found a second cousin on Rootschat. Rootschat gave us the opportunity to contact eachother and since then I have learned many things about our family history and enjoyed many surprises.

PS I used to live in Bromham as a teenager. Assume you must be the John Partridge who 40 years ago used to ride down Mollivers Lane in the basket of my paper bike, before catching the school bus to Biggleswade???  I'll contact you off board!

Here's your full report then :-)
We arrived about 10.30am and it was already buzzing.  I wasn't going to any workshops as we had our 1 year old in tow.  She was making friends with everyone on every stand!  There were lots of interesting things to look at, and we got in the queue for Eric Knowles to value our heirloom (which wasn't valuable as didn't tell us anything new).  Eric was very nice and even apologised for us having to wait! The War Forces Records stand was packed and we couldn't get anywhere near it. The larger stands didn't have enough "freebies" to give away. And as I've been doing my genealogy for a fair few years, I found it disappointing that most stands were only there promoting starting your family tree.  But, It was still a good day and I had a couple of good chats with some universities about distance learning courses.
My main "complaint" is about the venue.  Considering that the "target audience" for this is retired people, and quite a few of them I saw today were in wheel chairs or had sticks, Olympia isn't the best venue.  We had similar problems as we had a pushchair.  First of all the train station doesn't have disabled access, so we had to walk all the way around.  Then the baby changing is in the disabled toilet or you have to go down stairs to the other one.  There is only one lift.
But, apart from that, it was a great day and I would have gone to some of the workshops and lectures if we hadn't have had the little one with us.
I picked up quite a few leaflets too :-)

I attended on Friday with my free ticket, Thank you Rootschat. 
This was my first time to an event like this so wasn't sure what to expect.  I got lots of freebies bags, booklets and an umbrella.  Had an interesting chat with the man doing DNA, and with the lady from the Surrey Archives. as was the man on the Police stand, the lady on the Irish stall was very unhelpful.
I had hope to buy items there and thought they would have been cheaper, but no they were just the same price you would pay normally.
I enjoyed my experience of attending this event.

well done on the umbrella. I went to Michel Gandy's talk and got a free goodie bag voucher from wdytya. Apart from the plastic bag, my daughter has nabbed the pencil & note pad and the very nice fan chart leaving me with a family tree  programme (which you can download for free anyway)

Just wanted to say that after 3 succesful days at WDYTYA.  Made a few new contacts and spoke to the head of Anglia before I got to meet and put a face to the delightful Sarah.  Have to say she was so so different to how I pictured her.  Hope her and Trystan had a safe journey back to Bury

I got a magazine, two pencils, a ruler and a pen.  I didn't even get a bag!
And the only reason I got the ruler was because Emily was being cute to the stand holder!

That's cause it's a secret... ;)

Unfortunately, it's not a secret as it's just not possible - there are cheaper ways than online at Scotland's People, but they involve living or holidaying in Scotland and having access to either a local registrar or the Scotland's People centre in Edinburgh.  Or generous friends and family who will furnish you with Scotland's People vouchers all the time.

We are back from the Big Smoke and what a great few days !!

We were very delighted to meet and get the chance to chat in "real life" to soo many lovely rootschatters who came down to say Hi  :)

Huge Thanks to Monica, Dawn, Milly, Polldoll, and Scrimnett who all gave expert advice and put across to people just what a great friendly community we are and in many situations were able to help where the "professional advisers" struggled.

I had a great 3 days Lydart ...Met  some really lovely people...Monica,Tilly and Dawn worked  tirelessly on the stand  to help Trystan and Sarah on this, their first WDYTYA Show  ; Scrimnet who kept popping in to see us all and help too ... And all are  kind, personable, helpful souls displaying the typical characteristics of the Rootschatters  that make up the membership of this forum. We talked and chatted to anybody and everybody who walked within ten feet of the stand and handed them a really beautifully designed( by Sarah) A5 card with all the information they would need to find us online and listing all the Boards and subjects we cover on the Forum. Prospective new members were shown the site live, on Tablets, to familiarise them with it's layout and show how simple the procedure was  to register and then ask their question.

 There was a slide show of some photos, before and after restoration and people were encouraged to go to the Common room to post if they found themselves really unsure of where to post their first query... and were assured that it wasn't a hanging offence if they made mistakes at first ;D ;D After all,  the site is reknown for it's friendly demeanor.

 I had  a wander  around  the rest of the exhibiton and had a DNA TEST  for locating matches on a database that is growing by the day and will have to wait 8 weeks for any results . Maybe I'll find some Canadian cousins that I'm sure I have somewhere ??? ;D

 I met some of our Rootschatters  that I've chatted to online  and found them to be exactly as they seemed to be "for  real " and  that's very reassuring .  Luckily my hotel was only five minutes walk from Olympia so I didn't have far to go at the end of the day ...which was just as well I think as Trystan will testify ... The legs were rather  worn out at the end of each day ... ;D ;D
( and mine were pretty short to start with !)
