Greetings Rootschatters - hoping someone can help solve a mystery.
Llewellyn "Lyn" Vance Richards was born 1946 in Melbourne and last appears on the 1968 electoral roll as Lyn Vance Richards. I can't find any trace of him after this despite extensive Ancestry searches.
His father Ivor and mother Winsome Jean died in the 1970s.
The family myth is that Lyn died in a bushfire related accident circa 1985 (???)
BDM Vic cuts off in 1985, and he is not one of the Llewellyn Richards listed prior to that.
Any clues or pointers most welcomed.
Regards and thanks

His parents were cremated at Springvale and their ashes scattered.
Did he die in Victoria?

Thanks Cando, I am not sure where he died. The last clue is the 1968 Victorian electoral roll.

A very nasty accident in Qld involving mother and child.
(No help in your search though)

May I ask a direct question please ...
Do you know for certain that your person is deceased, or are you relying on the family myth only...
Is it possible that he moved interstate or migrated overseas, or changed names?
Cheers, JM

Hi JM, you are quite right we don't know for sure what happened to him.
But the family (in England) were informed by another family member circa 1986 that he had died in a bushfire when the wind changed direction.

So he may have been a volunteer fighting a fire and been caught by that wind change. I wonder if there's any Honour Boards for those lost
Cheers, JM

It seems that he has gone somewhere between c1968 and c1972 though his parents are still enrolled at the same address - Ashgrove Stud Farm (poultry?).
There is an administration of Ivor's estate and a probate for Winsome which might give some clues as to his whereabouts.

There is an AUSTRALIAN EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT KNOWLEDGE HUB which has information about bushfires. They have an email address for queries. At least they may be able to give you some pointers as to where to look for information.

There was a fatal bushfire in Victoria in 1985, but this short report does not have any names.
http://home.iprimus.com.au/foo7/firesum.html#2
14 January 1985
A major fire in Central Victoria burnt 50,800 hectares of land, including 17,600 hectares of Crown Land. Three people died and over 180 houses, 500 farms and 46,000 stock were destroyed as a result of the fire. Areas affected include Avoca, Maryborough, and Little River.
There are other fatal fires in Victoria listed on the same site, including
Ash Wednesday - 16th of February 1983, 47 deaths in Victoria. Cockatoo, where Lyn was on the roll in 1968, was badly hit. (Of course he may not have lived there by 1983.)
21 January 1997 - 3 died in the Dandenong ranges - Cockatoo in the same area.
Lots of later ones as well.
Other than that I guess archival newspapers is another avenue to try.
Judith - sorry, not much help!

His occupation in 1968 was dllr....Driller :-\ What sort of driller? Water, quarry, oil etc?

Thanks everyone for your help. Does anyone know when BDM Vic "roll-over" the next year of available online death records i.e. 1986?

I would be interested to know which part of the family you are referring to. My grandfather, Ivor's brother Jim (Harold Giles), had been trying to trace Ivor's two sons up until his death in 1990 without success as far as I know and I've found nothing till coming across this thread now. Does anyone know anything about the other son Evan John?

Hello Stoodly
My name is Evan Richards. I am the brother of Llewelyn Vance ("Lyn") who you were searching for in 2006. I have just googled him and only now seen your chat from back then.
I would like to talk to you if you knew Lyn.
Or if you respond on this rootschat site, will I be notified (by email?)
I look forward to hearing from you.
regards,
Evan

Hi Evan, I was doing research for someone else - it's not my family! But I will pass on your msg to that person.
I have also previously corresponded with Copper Bottom, so hopefully they will be in touch with you directly.
Kind regards

Hi Evan,
Yes you will be notified by email of new replies to your posts on RootsChat.
Please do not post your email address in postings, the posts are public which is great family history research as it is easy to find family connections but emails can easily picked up by spammers.

Sarah

THIS POST IS NOW CLOSED. Family members have been put in touch with each other and confirm that Llewellyn Richards did not die in a bush fire.
