Hi,
I am researching the Douglas family from Yetholm for my cousin, and finding it very difficult, as there are so many Andrew Douglas's. The ones we want are Andrew Douglas 1849 who married Mary Tait 1850. They had a son William 1880 who married Rebecca Butler at South Shields. I would like to know who were Andrew's parents & siblings also Mary's parents & siblings.
It would be great if someone out there could tell me.
regards Cathiemay.

If Andrew and Mary married in Scotland, downloading a copy of their marriage cert from Scotlands People website will give you that information

According to dau. Agnes' birth certificate Andrew Douglas and Mary Tait married 25/6/1868 Coldstream which is in Berwickshire, Scottish borders. Cannot trace either in Scotland or England.
From what I can see they didn't seem to register the births of hardly any of their children - however, Andrew Douglas died 15/5/1911 Kirk Yetholm aged 62 of Valvular Heart Disease - informant was his son Andrew. His parents are show as William Douglas and Agnes, formerly Clark.
I am only able to view transcripts of Scottish census:
1851 - Yetholm
William Douglas bc.1816 Hawker b. Yetholm
Agnes Douglas bc.1821 ditto
Walter Douglas bc.1843 ditto
Andrew Douglas bc.1849 ditto
1861 - Yetholm
2 further children: Jane bc.1855 and Agnes bc.1858. Also with family is Andrew's father - Matthew Douglas bc.1783 Yetholm - Pauper formerly Hawker.
Scotlands People should have Matthew's death certificate which will tell you who his parents were.

Hi Annette & Carole
Thank you Annette for all the trouble you have gone to searching for Andrew Douglas. You have been a great help. I did try to find Andrews death in Scotlands people Carole but it kept coming back no trace. Will have another go sometime. Thank you for your reply.

Hi
DOUGLAS and TAIT were surnames very common among Yetholm's gypsy community, and the profession of 'hawker' is another indication that they were gypsies..
The gypsies travelled during the summer months, so christening any children born at this time would not have been easy.
Regards,
Lesley

Re Douglas and Butler.
Rebecca Jane Butler married William Douglas at South Shields. William was born at Bellingham Northumberland to Andrew Douglas and Mary Blyth who were both born at Kirk Yetholm. William was killed in WW1 his name on the memorial at Kirk Yetholm. His wife and children moved to Kirk Yetholm.
I also have difficulty trying to verify Andrew’s and Mary’s parents. I don’t think Mary Tait is parents of William Douglas.

I have a William Douglas .. baptised at Yetholm 1798 ... then went up to Sutherland and married Ellen Paterson at Tongue, Sutherland. His father was Thomas Douglas and mother Oliver Young (a lady). And came to Canada in about 1840
