I have the full set of 1881 Censuses, on CD's, but since changing my PC to include Windows 7, I cannot open or use, the Resource File 2.0 Disc - prior to inserting the county disc of choice. (It used to open OK on Windows XL).
The Disc contents have the appendix ,dxl. Anyone any thoughts?

I'm afraid it is likely that the discs can no longer be used.

Still got to keep at least one old XP machine working :-\

You'll have to run your 1881 Census from a "Virtual Machine" installed on your Windows7 computer. This can be set up to run WindowsXP. So, one such program is the VMWare Player which is available free. You then need WindowsXP installation discs. I didn't perform the installation myself on my machine so I don't know if there are any tricky bits, but a computer shop should be able to do it for you without too much hassle.

Windows XL or XP? I think that XL is not widely known, especially reading the earlier replies.
When I purchased my Win7 laptop I could no longer use some programmes because they were designed for a 32 bit platform and my laptop was designed for 64 bit; it was therefore pointless trying to install 'workarounds' like VMWare player.
To know which system you have, you need to click on Start/Control Panel/System and Security/System and look at System type. If you do have a 64-bit operating system then your old Resource file may never work. However, as VMWare is free, give it a go.

AFIK 32 bit programs/tools will work under a 64 bit OS without the need for Virtual Machines
(VMWare). You could try changing the compatibility tab under the files properties.
The old 16 bit programs/tools WILL NOT work. This has been disabled by Microsoft and Linux for all 64 bit OS.
The only work around is to use a 32 bit OS or get the software manufacturer to re-compile to 32 bit.
Hope this helps.

Thanks Jim,
One programme was Paint Shop Pro which worked perfectly with XP and Vista on 32 bit but refused to run the installation from the DVD on 64 bit. The other programme had the same refusal. So where would I start with compatibility tabs?

Falcybe:
I used PSP on Win98 and XP but forgot all about it with vista, will now try with Win7 64 bit, what a great image program.
If you have the .exe file (or any other) on a cd/dvd, you will need to copy it over to your desktop.
Right mouse click the .exe file, select properties at the bottom of the dialog, then select the compatibility tab.
Check the box: Run this program in compatibility mode for, and select a windows version,
as a minimum try Windows XP Service Pack 3; at the bottom click Apply, then OK.
You should now be able to install the program. You may need to use admin rights.
Best wishes,
Jim

Thanks Jim,
I'll try that out at the end of the month, when I will have visited my mother and taken back my programme. I had left it with her when I thought I couldn't get it to work anymore.

..........and try searching Scotland on FamilySearch ! Index only, with parish, age and county of birth. The full LDS 1881 transcription of the Scottish census is only available at ScotlandsPeople.gov.uk, at one credit per view of the transcription for one household, or 5 credits to view an original page.
