Title: Gwernaffield - help finding burial plot of my gggrandparents, please.
Post by: Cariad.bach on Tuesday 05 February 13 11:50 GMT (UK)
Hi :)

I'm looking to find the grave/s of my g.g.grandparents - Fred Jones was buried 25 June 1940, and his wife Annie Jones was buried 27 July 1959.

I have seen the parish records which show the funerals took place in Gwernaffield, however when I visited the cemeteries I couldn't find their grave/s (I don't know if they are buried separately or together) and I wondered if anyone had the plot records for Gwernaffield church. I have found other family members there, and would love to find my grandparents too.

Thank you,
Emma :)

Memorial Inscriptions have been published for Gwernaffield by Clwyd FHS;

Thanks Wrex, that's a lovely offer and very kind of you :)

I'm fairly local to the area, and I do visit now and again to lay flowers on the graves I have found, but am still missing this pair of great grandparents! Am off up to the Records Office in Hawarden in the next couple of weeks, so hopefully will find more there.

Thanks again :)

Hi John, thanks for your reply :)

I spoke to a lady at Mold library a couple of days ago, who looked through the grave plots/memorial inscriptions of the Gwernaffield cemeteries, and she said she couldn't find them either..

I'm at a bit of a loss now, and as the burials were relatively recent, I didn't think it would be this hard to find them :(

Hi

I noticed that the two people listed after Annie - and those on the following page - in the burial records have 'New Churchyard' in the margin . Also, one further down from Fred's entry has 'Cemetery ' written in margin. Nothing written against either of your granparents' entries, so I'd assume it would be somewhere in Holy Trinity  Could there have been some missing entries in the plot records  :-\

Hi Brevitas, so you've seen entries for both? Can I ask where so that I can have a look please. I'm getting more confused by this by the minute!

I'll have to go back and have another look for them, a lot of the church yard is in a bit of a state, with lots of gravestones overgrown with ivy etc, and also stones backing onto other stones that I couldn't see the inscriptions of, although I did think they were more likely to be older burials, maybe I've just missed them  ???

Thank you for your help :)

Do you think it would be feasible to think that they had the funeral service at Gwernaffield church, but then were buried elsewhere?

I know Fred was originally from Northop (although when I went to the cemetery there, I didn't find anything) and I think someone may have mentioned Pantmwyn to me.

Clutching at straws a little now!

Burials are usually what they say rather than just the service and as there are marginal notes on some, I think it would say if they were buried elsewhere.  They're definitely in Gwernaffield records.

Could you maybe see if you could find obituaries in the local papers. I've managed to get locations for some of mine that way. I was lucky that I used to go with my Dad to tend both sets of grandparents' graves so I could still go to them now. They didn't have headstones.
