Title: Missing children
Post by: Gibby1968 on Saturday 02 February 13 18:50 GMT (UK)
The reference below shows Frank Boulton (my 2x great uncle) and his wife in 1911;

RG14; Piece: 26005; ; .

I know about the first two children but I am mystified with the rest of the information on the original census image.  For a start, Frank (if he was the one who filled in the census) or the enumerator can't add up.  It says six children born, three died, five still living.  That does not make any sense ???

As you will see on the transcription of the image and the original, no information apart from their name is given about the children who have been crossed out, so I don't know where to begin searching for them.  They don't appear in 1901 so they will have been born between 1901 and 1911.

I would be grateful if someone could help me fathom this one out.

Thanks.

Hello,

The first and last children on the census were born in Menston (Wharfedale reg district) so its probable that the other two who were crossed out were also. You need to just search the bmd for them between 1901-1911.

For example there is a Blanche Boulton born Wharfedale Jan-Feb-Mar 1905 and died Wharfedale Jan-Feb-Mar 1905, this is possibly the girl on your census ?

Mick.

It's also looking like they lost their son Ernest as a baby too.

Births Sep 1900

Boulton    Ernest         Wharfedale    9a   145

Deaths Sep 1900

Boulton    Ernest    0    Wharfedale    9a   101

I think they must have got a little confused by the question how many born alive etc.

I showed it to my mum and she said something about stillborn children.  They would still in the died column though?

I wonder where Leslie Boulton fits in?  His name wasn't crossed out leaving three children including the eldest two I already knew about.

I now have the birth and death records for Blanche and Ernest along with Blanche's burial aged just two days :'(

The question in 1911 is how many children born alive,so stillborn children shouldn't be counted.
But I bet there were plenty who did count them.
They didn't register the birth of them either,so you won't find them in the GRO birth indexes.
