Title: Preston local newspapers
Post by: tex t on Saturday 02 February 13 18:01 GMT (UK)
Could anybody suggest which would be considered to be the local newspapers in Preston, i.e. those that would carry obituaries, in 1919/20 and in 1946?

Suggest Lancashire Daily Post/Lancashire Evening Post [It changed its name] - published in Preston and carried Preston news. Also Preston Guardian, Preston Chronicle and Preston Pilot - although I'm not totally sure how long the last three survived into the 20th century.

Try the Harris Library.-harrisd.library "at" lancashsire.gov.uk.  A local group is researching the war memorial names and may have extracted what you are seeking.

Thanks for your kind offer, but as you will see, this query started in February and since then the friend I was making the enquiry for has visited the Harris Library.

However he was unable to see bound copies of the Preston Herald which covered the time period of his interest.  On asking to see these he was told at the enquiry desk that they were unavailable, with the explanation being something like "we cannot reach them at the moment".  A subsequent e-mail to the library some weeks later enquiring if they were now available received the reply, "The volumes you wish to view are unfortunately unavailable until further notice."  This e-mail reply was in May, I don't know if the situation has changed yet.

It could be that the newspapers are in a store other than the one in the Harris. The county library have a big store-room in a street off Corporation St and another near to County Hall,. I think a request asking that they be made available to view and giving a couple of weeks notice will do the trick..It is unlikely that they have disposed of them. Bob

More of a challenge if they aren't available  :D  Let me know exactly what your friend is looking for and I'll go and badger them

Simon,

My friend was interested in seeing if there were reports in any local newspapers of the funerals of his grandparents,

William Stead, died 20th February 1920, aged 48

Margaret Stead, died 10th June 1946, aged 73

He found nothing in the local newspapers that were available at the Harris Library, but as mentioned above, the bound copies of the Preston Herald were unavailable.

If you are able to help he would be very grateful.

Regards,

Tex
