Can someone tell me why there would be 2 birth entries for the same person. One with the same surname as the mother and the other with a different surname. Can I assume the parents were unmarried & the other name was the fathers or that the child was adopted or is there another reason.

to answer this question is two fold>
firstly in the bmd u may spot an entry where the name is the same as with the registration office, however the folio and book number may be of difficulty, from when the transcriber was reading the microfilm portion, due to dust or scratches or bad ink in the original.... so yes in that regard there will be two entries , as in the case of my mothers cert reference.... (take both entries GRO will sort that out)
secondly> two entries in the same registration office is not uncommon where one has two brothers both married and they are naming their children the same as a "sense of keeping up with the Jones" and often we need a second or third resource to distinguish to whom they were born ( ie family search or a local bmd or a pr)....
there is a third reason for same or similiar names appearing in different registration districts and that is apparent with names such as Smith Jones Brown or any such name where it was popular..... in this way we use the census as a guide , and regindex to distinguish to whom and of what they belong....
hope this explains it.... others may have more knowledge of the St Catherines House or GRO referencing glitches... but its all good if you can find your kin...

May I suggest you put a parable up inclusive of name and what u may know about the person (providing its not a living soul) and someone will review to which certificate you may need...?

There a number of reasons, it all depends on the date, there was no formal adoption until, I think 1927ish, a Father could not be named on the BC if the parents were not married, unless both the parents were present, then the BC would be registered in both names, also if the parents married later, I believe that the child's name could then be amended, if you can give us the details, as long as the person is no longer living, we may be able to help further.

The person is living so I can't really put up the exact details but on both entries
1. the christian names are the same
2. the mothers name is the same
3. the district is the same
4. the volume is the same
5. the page number is the same
6. one of the entries has the mother's surname the other has a different surname.
The era was 1970's

If the parents weren`t married but the father was present at the registration of the child and was agreeable to being named on the certificate then both surnames are normally shown on the GRO index.

I have this with one of mine. one registration was the name of his mother, the next reg. was in the fathers names, the couple never married, so it seems that this might be rare but not uncommon.

Was the mother married, as she may have used her married name on one, and then her maiden name on the other, how do these names relate to the Father

Yes, I would assume it is nothing more than that for most incidences of this in recent years.
