Hi all, At the expense of seeming daft would someone please explain to me the meaning of the term "rec alms" when written down in the sentence:- "Mary Ridsdale, daughter of Matt Ridsdale of Bubwith Bap 22 Jan 1698 rec:alms".
Many thanks,
Frank.

Hi Frank,
'rec alms' means receiving alms. Alms being charity given to the poor by the parish or some other body/person.
Hope this helps
Kind regards
David

Hi, many thanks to you both for your rapid answers, I understand the meaning of it but cannot understand why it would be written after a baptism entry on a parish record, would the baptism have been administered as an act of charity?.
Sorry to be a pain :-[
Frank.

The reason for the entry was that anyone receiving alms would have been excused from paying the fee due for the baptism. Just keeping the books straight.
