Title: On This Day in FEBRUARY ...
Post by: genjen on Thursday 31 January 13 10:56 GMT (UK)
I'm just starting this new thread in case I'm not around to do it tonight or in the morning. Please join us in adding your ancestors' anniversaries and stories of their lives.  :)

On February 1st 1846, my 5 x great grandmother, Lyddia Favell, nee Lonsdale, died in Gilling by Richmond, North Riding of Yorkshire. I was stunned to find her alive in the 1841 census because I knew from her marriage and the birth of her offspring that she had been born some time in the middle of the previous century. When I eventually found her birth, it turned out to be in 1752, so she was ninety-four when she died. Whenever anyone tells me that people didn't live as long in 'the olden days' as we do now, I just raise my eyebrows and think of Lyddia. She's one of my favourites! :)

Also on this day in 1865, Robert Raitt was born in Monymusk, Aberdeenshire. He was a first cousin, three times removed.

My great x 2 grandfather, William Henry Howell was born on this day in 1829 in Liverpool. He was a Merchant Seaman and according to his Navy records he was described as being 5ft 2½ inches tall, brown hair and grey eyes. He had a cut on the side of his left eye and an anchor on his left arm. He was apprenticed aged 16 in 1845 and could write.

On the 21st April 1859 he married Mary Ann Bills in London. Her father was a licensed victualler and let rooms to mariners, so I presume this is how they met. They remained in London and had 10 children. He died in 1890 in West Ham from Apoplexy and asthma.

Enos Hobson my g.g.uncle was born in Ingbirchworth, Yorkshire in 1859.  He moved to Manchester with his widowed mother probably around the time of his father’s death in 1876 and like many in his extended family, became a butcher.

Elizabeth Lockwood (nee Hobson) my 2 x g.grandmother was baptised in Cumberworth, Yorkshire in 1818.  She was the mother of Enos above.

Charles Brand my 2 x g.g.uncle was baptised in New Sleaford, Lincolnshire in 1823

Thomas Postlethwaite my 5 x g.g.uncle was baptised at St Mary’s Parish Church, Dalton in Furness, Lancashire in 1728/9.  He was the g.nephew of Mary Myre below.

Mary Myre my 7 x g.g.aunt was baptised in Whicham, Millom in 1674/5.

Eliza Louisa Whittaker (nee Clarke) my husband’s g.grandmother was baptised at St Paul’s Church, Warwick in 1852. She was the mother of Edmund Arthur Whittaker below.

Edmund Arthur Whittaker died in Ashton-u-Lyne, Lancashire in 1955.  As he frequently switched his name around to Arthur Edmund, this caused some confusion when his grandson went to register his death.

William d’Aubigny 3rd Earl of Arundel, my 22 x g.grandfather died this day in 1221.  He joined the Fifth Crusade (1217-1221) and died on his journey home, near Rome.  News of his death did not reach England until 30 March 1221.  His body was brought home and buried at Wymondham Abbey.  His title went to his son William until he died childless in 1224, it was then passed to his brother Hugh.  Hugh’s 4th sister, the first three having already died had married John FitzAlan of Clun and the title, together with Arundel Castle passed to him when Hugh, too, died childless.  Naturally, I am descended from the youngest sister!

Francis William Benson my lovely dad died this day in 2003, aged 91.  He was always the extrovert and loved by everyone who met him, including all the nurses he came across in hospital on his numerous stays during his last 10 years of life.  When he was transferred to a wonderful nursing home a couple of months before he died, he was always wandering around to see what was happening.  On the morning he died, the night nurses had been in to him before they went to give the report to say cheerio to him and say they’d be back that evening.  He was told to stay in bed until the day nurse came.  When the day nurse went to his room about 15 minutes later, he had died.  They told us he was obviously getting out of bed, as usual, and had just died with a smile on his face.  I can imagine that.  The nurses told him to stay in bed and once they’d gone, he smiled to himself and started getting out of bed.  Interestingly, he told me four weeks before he died, that he’d seen his eldest brother (who had died in 1982) who told him he was coming for him in 4 weeks – how bizarre is that?

Two photos attached.  The first one when he was aged 52 at his Silver Wedding Anniversary, the 2nd one I think was in his late 80s.

He was quite a character and if he went out to the shops, or to take his dog for a walk, mum knew it would be at least 2-3 hours before he got back because of all the people he would stop and talk to.  In the bottom photo you can just see some white near his collar.  That was covering his throat.  He'd had laryngeal cancer and had his voice box removed and was supposed to speak by putting two fingers on a stoma in a hole in his throatneck ???  Unfortunately, he used to press too hard so gave up that method and just used an electronic larynx, a battery operated machine that produced a sound when placed against his neck and spoke.  This produced a sound like a Dalek.  My grandchildren thought it was hilarious, so he did it more and more for them.  It didn't stop him talking 90 to the dozen to everyone though and they could all understand him.

In the last 10 years of his life he actually had had cancer of the bowel, larynx and prostate - all primaries - bowel and larynx cured, only the prostrate returned near the end of his life.  The doctors were amazed that he was so well for the 10 years from when he had his first cancer to his death.

George Whateley Holmes was born in Flatbush, Brooklyn New York in 1883
He married on the 4th February (so getting in early) 1908 to Ethel Louise Carlisle.

George's father had emigrated from England and took over the metal pencil factory he worked at. George died on the 1st November 1918 in the Malbone Street Wreck - a train crash on the Brighton Beach Line, on Long Island. There was a labour dispute and the driver was not properly trained. The train co tried to blame him.
In a later court settlement, Ethel was awarded $40,000 damages.

George was my paternal grandmother's cousin

p.s. before his death he received a draft card calling him up for military service in WW1. However his death meant he did not serve and the war was soon finished anyway

p.p.s.
93 People died in the crash

Benjamin Bayldon my 4 x g.g.uncle was baptised in Almondbury Parish Church, Almondbury, Yorkshire in 1736/7.  He was a brother of Maboth Bayldon below.

Susanna Dye my 2 x g.g.aunt was baptised at St Mary’s Parish Church, Newton Flotman, Norfolk.  She was sometimes known as Susan.  When her sister my 2 x g.grandmother died aged 53, leaving an elderly husband (who was 21 years her senior) and 2 of her sons still at home, Susanna, who was unmarried, went to live with them as a housekeeper/cook.

Thomas Boulton Benson my 1st cousin 3 times removed was baptised in Dalton in Furness, Lancashire in 1851, 3 months after his birth.  I don’t know where the name Thomas Boulton comes from but my g.grandfather was given the same name when he was born in 1857.  I cannot find any Boulton’s in the family or any illegitimate children prior to these births.  I contacted the local archivists to see if they had any clues, but they said it was a fairly well known name in the area.  In fact on the 1851 census, there is a Thomas Boulton born 1786 and his wife Betty, living next door to Thomas Boulton Benson and his parents in Ireleth.  He was an ag.lab, so unlike in another branch of my family not an employer or a rich man that his name was given to two children.  I’ve checked out the parents of the Thomas Boulton born 1786 and there is a choice between a John Boulton and a Margaret Woodend or a William Boulton and a Mary Hunter.  Either way, there is still no connection to my ancestors.

John Hobson & Maboth Bayldon my 4 x g.grandparents were married at Almondbury Parish Church, Yorkshire in 1772.  It's possible that both John and Maboth could write, as the signatures on the parish record are not the same handwriting as the rest of the record but they are similar to each other.  The witnesses also signed their own names.  This seems remarkable to me in 1772.  John was a Drysalter and his will in 1800 showed he was also a shopkeeper.  Maboth’s father was variously described as a chapman, a merchant or a clothier, so he presumably he could write his name at least.  Chapman is just another name for merchant.

Charles Lightfoot my 7 x g.g.uncle was baptised in Holme Cultram, Cumberland in 1681/82

Charles Dawson my husband’s 2 x g.grandfather died in Salford Lancashire from Morbus Cordis and Chronic Bronchitis in 1873.  His occupation was variously given as a groom or horse keeper.

Elizabeth Woodward (nee Hayes) my 3 x g.grandmother, known as Betty, was buried  at St Laurence Church, Frodsham, Cheshire in 1825

John Okey and Elizabeth Negus my 7 x g.grandparents were married at St Andrew the Great Church, Cambridge in 1687/88

Sophia Gould died 2nd February 1871. She was born Sophia Barrett and was my second cousin three times removed. She married John Scott Gould in 1840 but the marriage was childless.
She has been the key to unlocking a flood of Barretts in my family tree, as her husband was seriously rich and left her very well off; her Will is one of those genealogical gems that list so many people, with at least an indication of their relationship. She left over £250,000 excluding real estate; the will includes over eighty cash bequests, many charitable bequests including to her own almshouses in Taunton, these amounting to over £38,000; nine or ten estates are named and bequeathed (there may well have been more in the residuary estate). My great-grandfather was one of the executors and a beneficiary. Following all the names through the family took me a very long time - even though many of them were already known to me. My main regret is that I haven't found out much about the Gould family, which is where the wealth came from - and a minor regret that the wealth hasn't filtered down to me!

One press report: Bath Chronicle and Weekly Gazette 23rd February 1871: Mrs. Scott Gould, who died recently at North Curry, near Taunton, was possessed of nearly half a million sterling. She has left a legacy of £2,000 to the Taunton and Somerset Hospital.

On February 3rd 1865, my great grandfather, Clarence Samuel Howe, was born in Brightlingsea, Essex. He was the second son but until census information became available my family believed him to be the eldest or that an older brother had died in childhood. All first sons were named Benjamin and for some reason, in later years, Clarence was known as Ben. But it seems that the brother didn't die young. He can easily be found living, firstly in Kent and then in Surrey and working, not as a seaman as most of his family, but as a baker. He married Miss Bun the Baker's daughter ( I can't remember her actual name without consulting my tree) and lived to  a respectable age. So what did he do to be cast out from the family and for his little brother to inherit his name?
Clarence was a merchant seaman and at some point in his travels, he met the very young Catherine Shaw of Nairn. They married in Caistor, Lincolnshire and two months later, she gave birth to their first son ( Benjamin, of course). Clarence and Catherine settled in Nairn where he gained his master's certificate and went to be the only member I have found so far to have been awarded a medal or letters after his name. He was involved in a major sea rescue just off Nairn where a Norwegian vessel had gone aground. The King of Norway gave medals to all the rescuers and Clarence was subsequently awarded the MBE. Here he is in all his glory.

Elisabeth Pake my 4 x g.grandmother was baptised at Holy Trinity Church, Haddenham, Cambridgeshire in 1764.  She married aged 22 and by the time she was 34 she had died and left 6 children behind, including my 3 x g.grandfather who was only 9.

William Spraggett my husband’s 3 x g.g.uncle was baptised in 1779.  He was one of 15 children and the eldest of the 8 brothers of Ann Spraggett below.

Roger Postlethwaite Benson my 2 x g.g.uncle died in the Union Workhouse, Ulverston, Lancashire in 1875 from Phthisis Pulmonalis.  I don’t know if he was resident in the Workhouse, or just died in the hospital attached to the workhouse, the informant was a nurse and he was buried in the Parish Church at Ulverston.  Although Roger was the 5th child and 3rd son born to my 3  g.grandparents, he was the first and only one to be given his mother’s maiden name as a middle name.  He is listed with his parents and siblings on the 1841 census, but after that there is no trace of him until his death.  I guess he was an ag.lab and travelled around for work and was never registered on a census.  All his siblings, apart from the eldest who died aged 21, married and are shown on census after 1841.

John Thomas Brand my g.uncle married  Sarah Dudley Robertshaw at St Luke’s Church, Cheetham, Manchester in 1884.

William Clarke & Ann Spraggett  my husband’s 3 x g.grandparents married in Wellesbourne, Warwick in 1829.  She was the sister of William Spraggett above but unlike her mother who had 15 children, Ann only had 5 and that included a set of twins.

William Aldous was born in 1845 at Worlingworth in Suffolk
By 1848, the family had moved to Derbyshire
William married Ann Lee in 1866 at Ashton under Lyne.
He was a cotton piecer at the time
By 1881 he was a colliery fireman, responsible for safety in the mine, at Worsborough in Yorkshire.
They had two children in the 1870's, Fred and Sarah (known as Sadie)

Then William disappeared off the face of the earth.

By 1890 Ann is living with Edward Jackson in Hyde Cheshire, as husband and wife with my grandfather Harry born there. Edward and Ann did not marry until 1896, which was in Macclesfield (out of the way of Hyde people who thought they were married?)

I have looked for deaths of William Aldous everywhere. There in a death in 1889 in Leicester, the age is 4 years out (but he could have fibbed about his age, Ann took 4 years off her age when she was with Edward)

Perhaps he did disappear and she waited the statutary 7 years to presume his death before remarrying. I also checked emigrations for William without any success.

Ann was my great grandmother, and Edward her second husband was my great grandfather.

Elizabeth Ann Pemberton my 1st cousin twice removed was baptised in Frodsham, Cheshire in 1866

Mary Ann Pemberton my 2 x g.g.aunt was baptised in Witton, Cheshire in 1816

Joseph Pemberton my 4 x g.g.uncle was baptised in Great Budworth, Cheshire in 1760.

Joseph was the 2 x g.g.uncle of Elizabeth Ann Pemberton and the g.uncle of Mary Ann Pemberton above, whilst Mary Ann Pemberton was the g.aunt of Elizabeth Ann Pemberton.  Interesting, but totally coincidental, they were all baptised on the 4 Feb, Elizabeth Ann over 100 years later than her 2 x g.g.uncle.

Jonathan Luckorish my husband’s 6 x g.grandfather was baptised in Wolston, Warwickshire in 1697/8

Henry Postlethwaite my 4 x g.g.uncle was buried in Ulverston, Lancashire in 1842

On January 5th 1865 my great grandmother Agnes Weir Tweedie was born at Young's Land, Armadale. She was named after her grandmother Agnes Weir. On the first census she appears in her family are at Tweedie's Land, also in Armadale. Her father John was a miner and her mother Rachel, a seafarer's daughter from Fife. They had met when John was working in Fife. Agnes spent most of her life living in the same village and on the same street as I myself was born but after her husband's death moved back to Armadale, where she died in 1944.
From what I have been told she was a tiny woman and known as wee Granny Tweedie by her grandchildren. As well as bringing her own children up, she also raised two of her deceased daughter Rachel's three daughters. This last piece of information was given to me by a lovely elderly lady who knew her and whom I met when I visited my birthplace last summer. I am still in correspondence with her and she is a mine of information.

On January 5th 1727, my 5xG grandfather John Wallace was born in Kirknewton. He was the middle one of seven children, having two elder brothers and one elder sister and two younger brothers and a younger sister. The family moved to Ratho, where John's daughter Agnes, my 4xG grandmother would marry into a family who had made the same move. On the day he was baptized his father's brother William was having a daughter Mary baptized in the same church at the same time. The page from this particular register is torn and though I know where William lived, annoyingly the part dealing with John's father James is torn just after the word 'in', which would have told me where in Kirknewton they were living. John took some finding and I had twice followed wrong trails, even though I knew in my heart of hearts they just weren't right. Then a vital piece of information turned up which in turn pointed to something  that had been staring me in the face for over a year, all part of the fun and frustration of family history.

.. in 1815 Letterby Bond (a male) was born in Denton Lancs

Unfortunately died and was buried there on 27th April

My great x 3 uncle

The name is of interest as I have never found Letterby or variant as a family name
I recently discovered his first cousin once removed was called Richard Leatenby Bond

Their common ancestors are John Bond and Ellen Swinlehurst who married at Tatham in the north of Lancs in the forest of Bowland.
This is a fairly newly traced area and I keep hoping there will be some connection with this name

Ann Jackson nee Lee (and formerly Ann Aldous see William Aldous a couple of days ago)
died at her house in Shepperton, MIddx in 1940 aged 92.

Ann was born 1848 in Upperthong near Holmfirth, to a shoemaker.
At age 2 her mother died in childbirth (the child must have died too)
In 1852 there was the great flood of Holmfirth - not sure what impact it had on the family.
By 1861 the family had moved to Glossop in Derbyshire.
Her father had remarried but stepmother died in 1862.
Ann married William Aldous in 1866 in Ashton under Lyne in Lancs
Her first two children were born Fred in Glossop and Sarah 'Sadie' in Penistone in Yorks.
At this point William Aldous seems to have disappeared.

By 1890 she is living at Hyde in Cheshire with Edward Jackson as husband and wife
He was undermanager of the mine.
My grandfather Harry was born this year and his sister Annie a little later.
Ann conveniently lost a couple  of years from her age, while with Edward, a younger man.

Edward and Ann married in 1896 in Macclesfield - perhaps Ann waited for the 7 year rule?
The family move around as Edward became mine manager, firstly in Breightmet near Bolton, then Pendleton before moving to Bredbury near Stockport in Cheshire.

Then Edward died through cancer of the Oesophagus (all that coal dust?).
When her son Harry was injured in a pit fall three years later (as undermanager) The whole family Ann with Harry and wife and Annie and husband moved south, joining Sadie who had already done so.
The family Ann, Annie and Annie's husband Noah  eventually settle in the house at Shepperton, which Noah built (he was a builder). Annie and Noah had a son named Edward.

Ann died in 1940 as said at age 92
This was  the start of a bad period.
8 months later, Edward , aged 15 was killed by a bomb hitting Shepperton studio where he worked. Only two 15 year old boys were killed.
The following month Noah had appendicitis and died.

At least Ann mercifully missed this.

On Saturday 6th February 1911, my great great grandfather Peter Wardlaw died in Bathville Row, Armadale. He was buried in Bathgate and the cost of the hearse to take him there was 6 shillings. He was the last surviving child of my 3xG grandfather, George. Peter, an eldest son, was named after his grandfather. His father was named George as was Peter's eldest son, my great grandfather. His brother Alexander's eldest son was also named George. My grandfather was named George and both my parents had brothers named George. So when I was born, an eldest son, when it came to naming...........well I think you can guess where this is going  ;)

On the same day in Tampico, Illinois, Ronald Wilson Reagan, the 40th president of the USA was born. His father was descended from Irish Roman Catholics in Tipperary and his mother was of Scots/English descent.

King George VI of England died, age 56

Cutting teeth probably. I was nine months old! ;D

I've been away so here are the people I have missed.

February 4th 1871, Joseph Milne married Margaret Daniel in Cruden, Aberdeenshire. My 2 x great grandparents, Joseph's father, also Joseph Milne, is one of my mystery men. He died very young, either before, or just after, his son was born in 1841 and being Scotland, before registration began. Joseph Jnr went on to be a quarry manager and I think he was also quite a prominent man in the community. I've found reference to him in several newspaper articles.

February 5th 1751, Ralph Littlefare, a 6 x great-uncle, was baptised in Cockfield, Co. Durham. Spellings of this surname vary so much that I have decided to make life easier and stick with one version for my own purposes! Cockfield is a village of which I had never heard until a few years ago when, within weeks of each other, I found it was big in the family history and my sister bought a house there! She had no idea either. Spooky eh?

I was in my first year at the local Grammar School .......... and we were all called into a special Assembly in the School Hall.

You can imagine the buzz that that caused! Not even the 6th Formers could remember ever having a Special Assembly before.

Of course, the announcement by the Head Master that "the King is dead, long live the Queen" led to gasps of horror, and lots of tears.

It was a huge change, even for an 11 year old.

I think we were all aware that the King had been ill, but not how ill.

February 7th, 1851 James Shaw married Margaret Smith in Nairn ( Oh, what a terrible time I have had with trying to trace her family but let's not go there at the moment). They were my 2 x great grandparents. He was a sea captain, she the daughter of a mason and although not rich, I suspect they were extremely comfortable. I have portraits of them, done in later life.

Ten years later, 1861, in Tollesbury Essex, my 4 x great grandfather, Samuel Howe died. What he couldn't know was that he would have a grandson, born in 1865, who would go on to marry the daughter of the above named James Shaw and Margaret Smith.

That's neat, isn't it! :)

Albert Douglas married Sarah Pierce Boyce at Windsor Registry Office in 1859.
He was 37 and she was 50. Both her parents had died and Albert worked in the Boyce family bakery in Middle Hill, on Egham Hill

Albert's oldest brother James Douglas and Sarah's younger sister Martha Ann Boyce had married 26 years previously.

Although Sarah was too old to have children, in 1867 James's daughter Elizabeth Boyce Donaldson died, followed by her husband John Donaldson in 1868. There were 6 children orphaned and two of these, Sarah Boyce Donaldson (10) and Mary Donaldson (5), sometimes known as Mary Boyce Donaldson, came to live with Albert and Sarah. James Douglas, though now old, took the youngest child, JOhn, and one further child lived with the Donaldson family in nearby Thorpe. THe other two were with family further afield.
Albert ran the bakery until after Sarah's death in 1883, when he moved to live with his spinster sister Mary. He died in 1888.

James Douglas was born in 1806 at Chertsey, Surrey to James Douglass and Mary nee Varnden.
He married Martha Ann Boyce in 1833 at St Marylebone's Church, London.
After of about the same time as his father died in 1835 he started a watchmaking business in Egham High Street. I feel this was probably in two different locations.
He was also registrar of births deaths and marriages for Egham, and for a while was clerk of the course for Egham races which took place on Runnymede.

James was my great great grandfather.
He died in 1879 in Egham.

The picture of James and Martha was taken in 1872 in Manchester

What an amazing hairstyle she has! It looks as if she should be hiding a gigantic, early i-pod down her dress and is sporting the latest accessories in earphones. ;D

Today I have just the one:

9th February 1783, Matthew Iley married Mary Kendrew in Brompton by Northallerton, North Riding of Yorkshire. They were 4 x great grandparents and both present stumbling blocks for me when it comes finding their forebears. The Iley family had their children baptised in a catholic church - the only members of my tree to have done that so I'm wondering if that's why I've had problems finding Matthew's parents. I know his father was another Matthew but beyond that, absolutely nothing!

What a great photograph to have Stonechat. I'm lucky enough to have two of my GG grandfather, alas neither show his wife Hannah.

Did he make the barometer ?

Two today and from my Bo'ness Browns again. On January 9th 1804, Margaret, the eldest child of my 4xG grandparents John Brown and Janet Gibb was born in Bo'ness.

January 9th 1937, Walter Brown, 6th child and 4th son of Walter Brown (brother of the above Margaret) my 3xG grandfather and his wife Margaret Dunlop, died in Station Road Armadale. His father, my 3xG grandfather was a blacksmith, like his father before him.

Another set of 4 x great granparents for me today.

10th February 1798 William Crichton and Mary Brechin married in Methlick, Aberdeenshire. They had four children, the third being my 3 x great grandmother, Christian Chrichton - a saintly woman if ever ther was one who went on to bring up as her own at least one (and possibly three) children who were the result of her husband's extra marital affairs.

The Chrichton family seems to have been in Methlick for at least four generations but like my Bushby line in Wensleydale, they seem to have kept their heads beneath the parapet as far as newsworthiness goes!

On February 11th 1782 Margaret Gibb, the third child and second daughter of my 5xG grandparents Walter Gibb and Margaret Sneddon was born in Bo'ness. Her elder sister Janet Sneddon Gibb was my 4xG grandmother.

I have known who Walter's parents were for some time but only recently found Margaret's. My confusion stemmed from there being two possible mothers, who after much frustration I found out were both the same person. It doesn't help that these families constantly intermarry. Walter's wife was a Sneddon and so was his mother and both were probably related.

I forgot one yesterday.    James Paul Stubbs born 10/2/1932, died 2004.

He's a son of Reginald Stubbs, son of my great aunt Lizzie, sister to my grandmother .... the one who 'ran away to Canada'.   Paul, as he was known, was born in Frenchman Butte, Saskatchewan, and I think he lived in that Province all or most of his life.   I met him once in Canada; he loved to dress as the cowboy, with tall tooled leather boots, and a big cowboy hat !

I later met his daughter in Malvern, UK, when she was over here for a conference !   Isn't the world a small place.

Baptised 11th February 1686, in Cockfield, Co. Durham - Mary Littlefair, my 8 x great aunt.

Baptised 11th February 1798 in Spennithorne, North Riding of Yorkshire, Richard Bushby - 5 x great uncle.

11th February 2013 - This very morning, I met my second cousin for a brief chat as he was on his way up to Ullapool to clear his mother's house. We share a set of great grandparents and I found him and his brother about eighteen months ago by some devious searching of Scotland's People and then asking Mr Google. They have an unusual surname so it wasn't hard to track them down but I never thought we'd ever meet!

Our 'phone has been out of order since 6 Feb, so no internet connection.  We didn't realise it was the 'phone, as we could ring out, we thought it was the router!  The fault has still not been fixed, so we can't receive calls, but for some reason the internet has suddenly become available.  So here are my "On this day" from 6-10 February in two posts probably.  I've not looked at today's yet as I wasn't expecting to be on line.

Regarding where were you on 6 Feb when King George VI died, I must have been in junior school, but I do remember when I got home that my mum was in a really bad mood.  I wondered what had happened and she told me the king had died,  but the reason she was so cross was that it was the first time since my dad had got home from Burma in 1946 that he had arranged to take her out to the theatre and it had been cancelled. She couldn't understand why just because someone - even the king - had died, that  meant that the rest of the population had to be inconvenienced and in a way, I don't blame her.

6 Feb
John Stanton my 6 x g.grandfather was baptised in Morton by Bourne, Lincolnshire in 1707/08

Sarah Mutton my 3 x g.g.aunt was baptised in Gedney, Lincolnshire in 1790

Harriet Dye my 2 x g.g.aunt was baptised at St Mary’s Parish Church, Newton Flotman, Norfolk in 1814.  Her father was a butcher as was one of her brothers, whilst her other brothers preferred to be ag.labs.

Thomas Woodward my 3 x g.g.uncle married Jane French in Weaverham, Cheshire in 1798.

John VI le Strange my 16 x g.g.uncle died in 1311.  He was only 29 but had already produced three children.

Elizabeth Negus was the wife of my 1st cousin 5 times removed and she died in Spalding, Lincolnshire in 1885.  By chance I have Elizabeth Negus in my tree.  She is my 7 x g.grandmother and came from Willingham in Cambridgeshire.

Matilda (Maud) d’Aubigny my 22 x g.g.aunt died in 1216 aged 38.  She had married William de Warren but remained childless.  After her death William re-married and had 2 children.  The daughter of this marriage, married Hugh d’Aubigny who was the nephew of Matilda (Maud).  It’s possible Matilda (Maud) was buried at Lewes Priory, as her husband’s 2 x g.grandfather founded the Priory.

Roger Postlethwaite Benson my 2 x g.g.uncle was buried at Holy Trinity Church, Ulverston, Lancs in 1875, 3 days after his death in the local workhouse.  Whether this is where all the inhabitants of the workhouse were buried I don’t know.  His other relatives were all buried in Dalton in Furness.

7 Feb
Anthony Benson my 6 x g.g.grandfather was baptised in Holme Cultram, Cumberland in 1697/98

James Whittaker my husband’s 2 x g.g.uncle died in Romiley, Stockport in 1811

James Postlethwaite my 4 x g.g.uncle was buried at St Mary Parish Church, Dalton in Furness, Lancashire in 1779

8 Feb
John Christian George Collett (656) married 1893

Billing Chapman my 4 x g.g.uncle was baptised in Pinchbeck, Lincolnshire in 1775.  I have copied part of the parish record which shows his name.  If anyone thinks it reads anything other than Billing, please let me know.

Hannah Dyke my husband’s 4 x g.g.aunt was baptised in Hatton, Warwick in 1765

Alice Hobson (nee Pemberton) my g.grandmother died in Manchester in 1908.  She was 65 and died of broncho-pneumonia and cardiac failure.  Administration was given to one of her sons.  Her effects were calculated at £107.13s 9d.  My mother who always thought that she, or her mother (a daughter of Alice Hobson) were badly done to, told me that before Alice Hobson died, she “gave” her butchery shop to her 2nd eldest daughter and her husband (who came from a butchering family) and  that her mother had been left out.  As, her mother’s husband was a draper, it was hardly surprising that he wasn’t going to be given a butchery shop.  My own thoughts are that Alice Hobson sold her business to her son in law.

Mary Woodward (nee Bell) my 4 x g.grandmother died at St Laurence Church, Frodsham, Cheshire on 8  February 1805 and was buried on 10 February 1805.   Oddly, her gravestone – photo attached shows 1808, it also shows that her daughter in law was also buried in the same grave, however, her daughter in law has her own gravestone with her husband! The age on the gravestone, matches the age Mary would have been in 1805!  I can only assume that the gravestone was put up years after her death, probably when the daughter in law died and although they knew her age at the time of her death, they had forgotten which year it was.  Alternatively, the stonemason got confused as he had already carved two 8s he just carried on and carved another one. I imagine that the stonemason thought it was a family grave and the daughter in law was being buried there too, I wonder if it was the same one that made the original gravestone.

Robert Postlethwaite my 5 x g.g.uncle was baptised at St Mary’s Parish Church, Dalton in Furness, Lancashire in 1745/46

Anne Randal my 5 x g.g.aunt was baptised in Sutton, Isle of Ely, Cambridgeshire, in 1701/2

Thomas Woodward my 3 x g.g.uncle was baptised at St Laurence Church, Frodsham, Cheshire in 1777

Ann Sharp (nee Gilchrist) my 3 x g.g.aunt died in Boston, Lincolnshire in 1874

Roger Postlethwaite my 5 x g.grandfather was buried in Kirkby Ireleth, Lancashire in 1769 aged only 42.  Despite having the same surname as my 5 x g.g.uncle, these two men were not related.  The only connection is that Roger’s daughter, my 4 x g.grandmother married a nephew of Robert Postlethwaite called Thomas Postlethwaite.  That means I have two Postlethwaite branches in my tree, but I cannot find a connection between them.

10 Feb
Anne Bayldon my 4x g.g.aunt was baptised at Almondbury Parish Church, Yorkshire in 1731/32

Sarah Wood(w)ard was baptised at St Laurence Church, Frodsham, Cheshire in 1744/45

Lucy Stanton my 3 x g.g.aunt died in Heckington, Lincolnshire in 1808 aged 16 days.

John Walker Blain my uncle (by marriage) died in Davyhulme, Manchester in 1992. He was aged 89.  He was the uncle whose wife died of a Sub arachnoid haemorrhage whilst playing bridge.

Hilda Dawson would have been my husband’s aunt but she died age 9 months in Beswick, Manchester, from Acute Bronchopneumonia in 1906.

Thomas Felton my 11 x g.grandfather died in Playford, Suffolk in 1587/88.  Thomas Felton succeeded to the Lordship of Playford on his father's death and was found to be heir of Sir Thomas Sampson, his grandfather and son and heir of Margaret Sampson, late wife of Robert Felton.  The manor of Playford with several other manors and lands came to his father by marriage to Margaret Sampson.

Mary Tubbs (nee Dunham) was the first wife of my 3 x g.g.grandfather.  My 3 x g.g.grandfather had already fathered an illegitimate child, my 2 x g.g.grandfather before marrying Mary Dunham 5 years later.  Mary Dunham died was buried in Holbeach, Lincolnshire in 1830.  Eight months later, having been left with 6 children from that marriage, he married again to someone called Ann Dunham.  I don’t know if there is any connection between his first and 2nd wife.  They have the same surname, but his first wife was born in Holbeach and his 2nd wife in Hull.

Francis William Benson my dad was cremated and his ashes buried at his home in 2003.  I wrote more fully about him on 1 February the day he died.

Mary Bell my 4 x g.grandmother was buried on 10 February 1805.  More about her on 8 February the day she died.

Mary Hawkins and John Cocket my 5 x g.grandparents married at St Mary’s, Weston, Spalding, Lincolnshire in 1751/52.

Bridget Postlethwaite my 5 x g.g.aunt married Joseph Goad in Aldingham, Lancashire in  1755

Eliza Stanton my 3 x g.g.aunt was baptised in Heckington, Lincolnshire in 1809

Sarah Bagshaw my 5 x g.g.aunt was baptised in Penistone, Yorkshire in 1707/8

Eleanor (Ellen) Tubbs my 2 x g.g.aunt was baptised at All Saints Church, Holbeach, Lincolnshire in 1828

Clement Tubbs my 2 x g.g.uncle was baptised at All Saints Church, Holbeach, Lincolnshire in 1826.  He was the brother of Eleanor above, and was the second Clement Tubbs to be born into the family.  The first one was baptised in February 1822 (I wonder what it was about them having babies baptised in February?) but died in December 1824.  The Clement Tubbs baptised this day in 1826 also died in October 1826.  Their father eventually got a son who he called Clement (after his own father) but only after his first wife died and he remarried.

My key anniversary for 12th February is the marriage of my great-great-great-great grandparents, Thomas Simons and Ann Marchant, in Eton. They are the furthest back I have managed to get in that line with hard evidence although I have a 19th-century family tree that takes me back to Thomas' great-great-great grandfather and to Ann's father. Thomas was gardener at Eton College; one of his sons attended the College and went on to become a clergyman. I am from his youngest son, who did not attend the College. Some (very remote) cousins, descendants of Thomas, are among current Etonians.

February 12th 1898,  Christopher Bushby's  2 x great grandson, Christopher Wilberforce Smith was born in Middlesbrough. My great uncle, who died near Ypres in July 1917 and is remembered on the Menin Gate.

February 12th 1897 ( slightly of date order because she's not part of the Bushby/Smith line, Mary Ann Smith was born in Middlesbrough. My great aunt. Several of the children in this family were deaf and I think she was one of them. She married John Pattison and had at least two children. My mum talked about her with great fondness but in that curious way which she had, managed to lose touch with Mary Ann and I don't think we ever met. If we did, I was so young that I don't remember it. My mother was a demon for this - I think she was slightly ashamed of her working class roots and once we moved out of Middlesbrough, she pretty much abandoned all of her relatives, leaving me grasping at thin air when it comes to padding out my family tree with anything other than dates and places.

Clifford CM (surname withheld) my 1st cousin once removed was born in Gainsborough, Lincolnshire in 1909.  My mother had told me that her aunt had adopted a child as she couldn’t have her own children.  Nothing odd in that, until I got his birth certificate and found out who his birth mother was.  Her surname was M and she was a maid in a house next door but two from where my g.aunt and her husband lived.  When the maid registered his birth she called him Clifford C M, C being the surname of my g.aunt’s husband.  So it looks as though my g.aunt adopted her husband’s illegitimate child.  On his marriage cert, CCM has not named a father, even though his adopted/real father was still alive and interestingly his home address at the time of his marriage was where his adoptive mother had been living 2 years previously when she died, so I assume he was living there with his father.  On his father’s death cert he was the informant and signed it as CCM adopted son.  I guess as adoption was not official at the time, CCM didn't feel he could put his adopted/birth father's name on his marriage cert.

Charles Gilchrist my 3 x g.g.uncle was baptised at St Botolph’s Church, Boston, Lincolnshire in 1800

Charles Cockett my 2 x g.grandfather was baptised in Holbeach, Lincolnshire in 1811.  He was illegitimate but named his father on his marriage certificate.  Unlike others in this situation who often use their grandfather’s name as their father, Charles actually named another man who lived in the same place as Charles and his mother.  It is such an unusual name that I assume it must be true, especially as Charles married in his home village and presumably everyone would have known who his father was.

John Dawson my husband’s g.grandfather was baptised at Manchester Cathedral in 1845

Elizabeth Duffin (nee Howard) my husband's 2 x g.g.aunt was baptised at St Peter's Church, Liverpool in 1816

Honor Collett who would have been my g.g.aunt if she'd lived,  died in Halesworth, Suffolk in 1850.  She was 10 years old and died of hydrocephalus/fever.  I guess she had been born with the hydrocephalus and in 1840/50 there was nothing that could be done to help her.

Henrietta Josephine Singline my 2nd cousin twice removed died in Tasmania in 1963

Anne Sharp (nee Gilchrist) my 3x g.g.aunt was buried in Boston, Lincolnshire in 1874.  She was the brother of Charles Gilchrist who was baptised the same day in 1800.  She was the second Anne, the first one without an E on the end of her name was born in 1802 and died in 1803.  This one was born in 1808 so had a fairly long life.

Alice Hobson (nee Pemberton) my g.grandmother was buried in Philips Park Cemetery, Manchester in 1908.  My mother had 2 grandmothers and 1 g.grandmother all called Alice.  They had all died by the time my mother was born, but her older siblings knew them all.  The g.grandmother outliving her younger namesakes.

William Hobson my 2 x g.g.uncle married Elizabeth Lockwood in Penistone, Yorkshire in 1821.  Coincidentally, William’s brother Joseph (my 2 x g.grandfather) also married someone called Elizabeth Lockwood.  I haven’t researched a connection between the 2 Elizabeth’s.  As Lockwood was a common name in the area, there probably isn’t a connection.

William Hobson my 3 x g.g.uncle married Fanny Smith in Kirkburton, Huddersfield, Yorkshire in 1804.  This William was the uncle of the other William who married Elizabeth Lockwood in 1821

I've just realised why so many people on this thread quote day, month and year for their ancestors .... they must have bought all the certificates, or got superb access to parish records !   Most of my tree just has people with the quarter of their birth or death, not an actual date !   And I'm missing out putting up some interesting people because of that.

Jen .... how do you feel about us just putting the quarter, as you originated this very interesting set of threads ?

My 1st cousin, 2 removed;  Lily Gertrude Taylor born in Plumstead in 1893;  daughter of George and Anne (nee Rainer). Lily married Edward Crane in Woolwich in 1913 and she died in Lewisham in 1976. She is shown as a dressmaker on 1911 census.

It is also the 7th birthday of one of my granddaughters.   :)

Seth Hobson and Alice Pemberton my g.grandparents married at Manchester Cathedral in 1871.  Ironically Alice died in February 1908 and was buried on 12 February the day before her wedding anniversary.  However, as her husband had died 16 years earlier I don’t suppose she would have been celebrating it.

Martha Hobson my 3 x g.g.aunt and George Crowther married at St John the Baptist Church, Wakefield, Yorkshire in 1797.  Martha was the g.aunt of Seth Hobson above.

John Thomas Brand my g.g.uncle was born at High Street, Alton, Hampshire in 1859. Although I live fairly near to Alton and have been along the High Street, it is impossible to work out exactly where my g.g.uncle and his parents (my 2 x g.grandparents) lived.  The local archivist thinks the property has been knocked down for road widening.  My 2 x g.grandfather was listed in a local directory in the 1850s which is how she worked out the approximate site of their house.

Winifred Francke  and Elizabeth Francke my 9 x g.g.aunts were baptised in Morton by Bourne, Lincolnshire in 1587/88.  Unfortunately Elizabeth died on 19 February and Winifred on 20 February the same year.  Two more daughters named Elizabeth were born in 1594/95 and 1608 but although the family had other daughters they didn’t use the name Winifred again.

Charles Connor my husband’s 3 x g.grandfather died in Liverpool in 1878.  The cause of death was Senile Decay – he was 71.  His eldest son James was my husband’s 2 x g.grandfather but he did a disappearing act after the 1851 census although he is listed in the 1855 Manchester directory as a cabinet maker.  I’m hoping to find him now the Manchester records are available on Ancestry.  What we do know is that James’ wife gave birth to an illegitimate child in 1862.

Joan (Johanna) Collett (nee Dameron) my 9 x g.grandmother was buried in Westerfield, Suffolk in 1612/13. Following Johanna’s husband’s death in 1600, a “Summary of Letter Patent with commission was issued from Queen Elizabeth on 5th March 1601 to escheators and feodary of Suffolk and Daniel Godfrey, gent. to hold an inquest of enquiry because the Queen has been given to understand that Johanna Collett [Joan Collett nee Dameron] widow, is mentally incompetent (fatua et ideota) so that she cannot govern her properties and goods and that in her imbecility she has alienated a great part of her lands and tenements and also dissipated a great part of her goods and chattels to her disinheritance and our manifest loss”.  A jury had to determine whether this was correct.  On 10th June 1601, “a  jury of 13 men was duly summoned who say that Johanna Collett is fatua et ideota and has been from birth so that she was incapable of managing her lands and goods but never alienated any lands or dissipated any part of her goods and chattels as far as the jury knows”. The reason my 9 x g.grandfather married Johanna who was obviously of low intelligence was that both his parents had died by the time he was 5.  It would seem that although he was his father’s son, he wasn’t his mother’s son as she didn’t mention him in her will, however, he had been made a beneficiary under his father’s will as the eldest son.  In his mother’s will, made just before she died, she stipulated that her brother in law (My 9 x g.grandfather’s uncle) should be responsible for looking after the children.  He did this so well that he “took” my 9 x g.grandfather’s inheritance so that as an adult he was penniless.  My 9 x g.grandfather’s uncle was friendly with Johanna Dameron’s father and they seemed to have come to some arrangement whereby, my 9 x g.grandfather would be married to Johanna Dameron who was her father’s only heir, so killing two birds with one stone, in that John Collett my 9 x g.grandfather would gain a fortune again, and Johanna Dameron would be married off.  However, unintelligent or “fatua et ideota” she was, she still managed to produce 8 children. ::)

What an interesting story.

Today, 13th February, is the anniversary of my maternal grandparents marriage in 1904.   George Frederick Clark m. Florence Eliza Williams; their first daughter Margaret was also born on this day (  :o ) .... but exactly a year later.

Lydart - The Colletts have been traced by me and many others for generations back and there is a website available to anyone to see all the ancestors back to about 1360 on my line.  I researched the Dameron line and all their ancestors - you asked how we do this. In the case of the Damerons and ancestors, because they were wealthy people there is lots of info available which you can find in Google books, Burkes peerage etc. plus wills available from National Archives or the other usual places, of course I ignored the so-called "True trees" which have been put together by Americans who make the ancestors fit the facts they want them to.

For many others of my ancestors I've seen the parish records, or other people (including Rootschatters) have looked at them for me, also many of them are now available on line on FindMyPast and Ancestry and other sites.  The ones from 1837 onwards I've bought certificates, or been sent copies by other people, distant relatives etc.  I suppose it helps that many were large families, so lots of branches means lots of distant relatives to help out.

I have been trying, without success to save a newspaper report into a format which could then be posted in here. It seems I am going to have to type it all out by hand, which will take me for ever.

Anyway, the gist of it is this:

February 13th 1892, Benjamin Howe, mariner of Brightlingsea and my 2 x great grandfather, took his own life by hanging himself from the iron bedstead at his home. He was found by his sons and the inquest gives lots of detail about the state of his mind and the various reasons for his extreme depression. Hi wife had died some years previously and although he was about to re-marry, his suicide note explained that he simply couldn't go through with it and that he wished he had been buried with his wife. The coroner recorded a verdict of 'suicide whilst temporarily insane'

Ninety-five years later, on February 13th 1987, Benjamin Howe's 3 x great-grandson was born ( my nephew) and in true family tradition, as eldest son, he shares the same christian name.

VALENTINES DAY

I have 6 relations called Valentine Howell, but as far as I can work out the only one who may actually have been born on the 14th of February is the first one, who was born in London in 1730. The rest were just given the name to pass on the tradition.

However, I do know that my grandfather, Valentine William Waters, was born on this day in 1876. He died from pneumonia on the 2nd May 1934, when my mother was 13. I managed to find his grave a couple of years ago and found that he was buried with his mother. I took flowers to the spot - no headstone, they were too poor for that I suspect. It is just a shame that I didn't discover this until after the death of my mother.

Well I thought I had quite a few for today, all marriages too, which would have suited the date. However on checking I found they were 14th April ::). I do have one though and a rare foray from Scotland.

On February 14th 1864 my 3xG grandmother Sarah's sister, Susannah Cudworth married William Marshall in St. Saviour's church in Leeds. William was a dyer and Susannah appears to have just been a spinster. Both father's were named William and her father, my 4xG grandfather William is registered as a shoemaker. Shoemaker indeed, I'll have you know he was a cordwainer, surely this is a better class of shoemaker  ;D.
My ancestry for some reason is awash with shoemakers though I myself have never felt the urge to knock up a pair of boots.

I did however, at junior school and via the art of French knitting, once turn out a fairly presentable tea cosy  ;D

Here's where they married. Looks a bit grim to me.

Just one for me today.

14th February 1846, 3 x ggrandparents, James Daniel and Margaret Hay were married in Cruden, Aberdeenshire. James was a farmer but his father was a cordwainer/shoemaker - description varies from one document to another.

I also have a fair numbr of shoemakers in the Scottish side of my ancestry.

Elizabeth Anne Clarke(e) my husband’s 2 x g.g.aunt was baptised at St Mary’s Church, Warwick, in 1836

Hilda Dawson who would have been my husband’s aunt if she hadn’t died young, was buried in Phillips Park Cemetery, Blackley, Manchester in 1906.  She was just over 7 months old.

John Uffindel and Margaret Daintry my 8 x g.grandparents were married in Histon, Cambridgeshire in 1661/62

15th February 1919, Lily Milne and James Bruce Scott were married in Aberdeen. 2 x great aunt and uncle. Here they are. My nan, Ethel Raitt was a witness at the wedding. :)

Elizabeth Cockett (nee Hidson) my 5 x g.grandmother was buried in Weston, Lincolnshire in  1746/47

Joseph Pemberton my 1st cousin 4 times removed married Elizabeth Griffin at Manchester Cathedral in 1841.

Margaret Benson (nee Wane) my 5 x g.grandmother married William Addison at St Cuthbert’s Church, Aldingham, Lancashire (now Cumbria) in 1765.  She had previously married my 5 x g.grandfather in 1749 at the same church but he died in 1752 leaving her with two sons.  They were baptised on the same day as each other but I don’t know if they were twins or not.

Minnie Whittaker (nee Hardy) my husband’s paternal grandmother was born in Hooley Hill, Audenshaw, Lancashire in 1877.  It must have been a popular name at the time because his maternal grandmother was also called Minnie

Frances Stanton my 2 x g.g.aunt was baptised in Pinchbeck, Lincolnshire in 1834

Eliza Stanton my 2 x g.g.aunt died in Pinchbeck, Lincolnshire in 1845 aged 13.  Her cause of death was consumption (TB).  She was one of Frances’ (above) sisters, the eldest one became my 2 x g.grandmother.

On January 15th 1915 Samuel Mons McEwan died from pneumonia aged 3 weeks at Crosscroes, Muiravonside. His mother was Agnes Shearer, the daughter of William Shearer and Christina Thompson. She was the wife of my great grandmother's eldest brother Samuel Greer McEwan and I think this death probably took place at my 3xG grandmother's house. Agnes had married Sam in May 1913 and at the beginning of August 1914 as a lance corporal in the 2nd Battalion Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders he left for the Front leaving his pregnant wife behind. This would be the last time Agnes saw her husband. He was killed in action just two weeks later. The baby's names come from her husband and from Mons, the place where he fell. Samuel was their first and only child.

I've often wondered what became of Agnes, I may have to try and chase her up at some point.

I have a similar situation on my mum's side of the family, with my great uncle dying at Ypres just after his first child was born. But in that case, the baby survived, married and had a daughter. The daughter, searching aimlessly for her grandad's name on Google last year, came across a post from me in RootsChat and in August, we met for the first time.  :D :D

A happy outcome for you gengen  :)

On January 16th 1870, Margaret Currie Laing Brown was born in Kilconquhar, Fife. She was the 5th child and 4th daughter of my GG grandmother Rachel's brother, Charles Shearer Brown and his wife Jessie Herd. Her father was named after a sailor and family member lost at sea one month before his birth.

On January 16th 1902 my GG grandmother Elizabeth Pate died at 1 St. John Street, Stirling. At the time she was the widow of my GG grandfather James Stein. Her parents were John Peat ( all his offspring use Pate as a spelling ) a shoemaker and Isabella Scott, a farmer's daughter. Her husband was most likely working for her father when they met, they married in 1854 and I do wish they had waited just one year so I could have an 1855 cert.
Elizabeth was born in Linlitgow in 1832, the 7th child and 4th daughter. Her elder siblings were George, John, David, Isabella, Janet and Marion and younger brother William. She and her husband moved to Stirling sometime in the 1870's probably due to the decline in the tanning and shoemaking industry in Linlithgow where it had once been dominant. Two of her brothers also made the move to Stirling and opened shop in Baker Street as Pate Brothers.
Her children were James, Isabella, James, John, Jane, Elizabeth ( my great grandmother ) and James. As can be seen she had three children named James, the first two died in infancy and are buried in Linlithgow, where all her children were born.

February 16th 1637, Margrett Waller was baptised in Brough under Stainmore, Westmorland. An 8 x great grandmother, daughter of Robart Waller. Robart, consistently spelled this way, is one of my earliest known ancestors on this side of the family, born around 1600. Every time we drive over Stainmore and past Brough, I wonder where my family lived. B.u.S. covers a huge area so I shall almost certainly never know the answer.

February 16th 1778, William Crichton was baptised in Methlick, Aberdeenshire. A 4 x great grandfather, son of John Crichton and Christian Miln.

16th February 1902 my great-uncle Charles Edward Glascodine Simons died in Merthyr Tydfil.

British Medical Journal, Volume 1(2148);  March 1, 1902: We regret to announce the premature death of Dr. CHARLES E. G. SIMONS, of The Hollies, Merthyr. Born in Merthyr in 1868 he received his early training there, and later at Bedford County School. Subsequently he was a student at University College, Cardiff, and at the Universities of Aberdeen and Edinburgh. He obtained the M.B., C.M. Aberdeen in I891, and in the following year the D.P.H. of the Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh. He soon settled down to practice in Merthyr first with the late Dr. Dyke and subsequently with Dr. Pechell. For some time he was a member of the Merthyr District Council. After Dr. Dyke's death, the then medical officer of health for Merthyr, Dr. Simons, who had acted as his deputy for some years, was appointed, the appointment being changed to a whole time one. After a few months, owing to differences with some of the members of the Council, he resigned the appointment and returned to private practice. For some time he had been in weak health, being a sufferer from diabetes, and on February 16th he succumbed to an attack of pneumonia. Dr. Symons, who was well known in the town and neighbourhood, was only 34 years of age. A keen worker and especially interested in all public health matters, the resignation of the appointment of medical officer of health was a great disappointment to him. He leaves a widow and two children.

Charles had married Wilhemina Elizabeth Barrett; her sister Nora Penelope Barrett married his brother Frederic Dyke Sydney Simons. Two more Barrett sisters married a pair of brothers from the Cardew family.

Eliza Stanton my 3 x g.g.aunt died this day in Heckington, Lincolnshire in 1809.  I don’t have a date of birth for Eliza but she was baptised on 11 February 1809, so I would imagine she was only a few days old when she died, the burial record just shows her as an infant rather than giving an age like the other people listed.

John Chorley my 3 x g.g.uncle died in Egremont, Cumberland in 1841 aged 21.  The cause of death was Scrofula and diseased knee.  John was a son of my 4 x g.grandmother who was born 4 years after her husband (my 4 x g.grandfather) died.  There was a bastardy order made for the upkeep of the child.

Honor Collett my g.g.aunt was buried at St Mary’s Church, Halesworth, Suffolk in 1850.  She was 10 years old.

Thomas Pemberton my g.g.uncle was buried in a non conformist grave at Manchester General Cemetery in 1915

Elizabeth Harley my 4 x g.grandmother married James Willsworth at All Saints Church, Holbeach, Lincolnshire in 1827 about 13 months after my 4 x g.grandfather had died leaving her with 6 children.  Elizabeth had 8 children, but three of them died, one aged 2 weeks and one aged 1 week and one who was no more than 6.  Elizabeth died 9 years after this marriage and James 10 years after the marriage.

Susannah Arnsby of Oundle and Matthew Wyman of Harringworth married at Oundle Northants in 1762.
Took me a while to find Matthew as he and most siblings baptised in Thorpe Achurch

From at least this year Matthew was a wheelwright in Oundle
This business was to continue for nearly 100 years.
Susannah and Matthew were my 4 x great grandparents

Mary Pierce Boyce was born today 1807 in Egham to George Boyce , a baker and Martha nee Pierce
She married William Giles of Egham in 1829 at St George's Hanover Square, they had one child George Giles b 1830. William died 1832 and Martha 1844. I suspect Martha was ill in 1841, she did not appear on the census and young George was with his grandparents
They may not have lived long but their grave has survived.

Thomas Boulton Benson & Selina Stanton Mumby my g.grandparents married at St Barnabus Parisch Church, Hull in 1879.  Thomas’ sister Ann and Selina’s brother James William had already married each other.

William Whittaker my husband’s g.grandfather was born in Denton, Lancashire in 1846.  Like all the Whittakers before him, he became a hatter.

William Bagshaw my 7 x g.g.uncle was baptised at St Nicholas’ Church, Bradfield, Yorkshire in 1641/42

Richard Collett my 3 x g.g.uncle was baptised in Stradbroke, Suffolk in 1763 Jane Stanton 1837

John Chapman my 5 x g.grandfather was baptised at St Mary’s Church, Pinchbeck, Lincolnshire in  1721/22

Dorothy Chapman my 5 x g.g.aunt (and sister of John above) was baptised at St Mary’s Church, Pinchbeck in 1732/33

Robert Robinson Gilchrist my 1st cousin 4 times removed died in Boston, Lincolnshire in 1899

John Frederick W Alden my half great uncle died at sea in 1906.  He was the son of my g.grandmother with her first husband.  He was married, but I haven’t researched whether he had any children or not, but I know his wife re-married in 1913. He was a bosun on a trawler called the Golden Eagle and he was lost overboard whilst fishing in the North Sea.  I doubt that even today, with all modern equipment available, a trawlerman lost overboard in February would survive.

Charles Connor my husband’s 3 x g.grandfather was buried in Ford Cemetery, Liverpool, Lancashire in 1878.  He was born in Ireland and all we know about his 1st wife (from the 1841 and 1851 census) was that she was called Mary and also born in Ireland.  As Charles re-married in 1857 as a widower we assume Mary died between 1851 and 1857, but there are far too many Mary Connors in Liverpool to decide which the correct death certificate is for her.

On 17th February 1889 my great grandmother Matilda Skelton McEwan was born in Eastfield by Airdrie. She was the second child of Robert McEwan and Hannah Greer. Both parents were of Irish descent, in fact her father was born there in County Tyrone, where the original spelling of his surname was McKeown. She took her name from her grandmother Matilda Skelton, also from an Irish family. She was known in the family as Tilda and I think her early life was not easy. Her parents seperated in her teens both re-married, her father emigrating to America. Her younger sister, Agnes was born in a poorhouse during one of her father's frequent spells abroad and two of her three brothers were killed in action in WW I. I think she may have been particularly close to her younger brother Alexander. His military records name neither of his parents, both of whom were very much alive as next of kin but consistently name his sister Tilda. Alex would be one of the brothers she would lose to the war.
She married my great grandfather George McBride and their first two children were twins, both girls, Mary Anne, named after his mother and Hannah, named after hers. Mary Anne lived for less than a month. Hannah survived, luckily for me as she was my grandmother.
According to these births George and Matilda married in Edinburgh in 1905, however I can find no evidence of this marriage. In 1948 they went through a formal marriage, again in Edinburgh, which was not where they were living. Matilda had suffered from diabetes mellitas for 18 years and my thinking is that, knowing she was dying, they legalised their marriage. She died just 28 days later.

Oh I have some hale and hearty ones gengen. It does make one feel  quite humble sometimes to find out about the hardships our forebears struggled through so we can be here today. I think telling their stories is the least we can do.

William Kerr Holmes died today in 1929 at his home in Great Neck, Long Island, New York aged only 58

He was prominent in his father's business which made metal (gold and silver) cases for pencils - not pencilcases but the metal parts of pencils
William patented some designs for pens

He was my paternal granmother's cousin.

3 births today:

A 1st cousin 4 removed, James Ware born in 1841 in Burghfield, Berkshire;  son of James and Hannah (nee Allwright).  James married Sarah Slade in 1864; they had nine children and James died in 1912. He was a county court bailiff at Reading.

My 2xgt. uncle, Edward Rainer, born in 1865 in Capel, Kent;  son of Edward and Charlotte (nee Henman). He died in 1883 at University College Hospital, London, after an amputation at the hip.  He must have been ill for some time because the 1881 census has him as a patient at Guy's Hospital.

My gt. uncle Frederick Howard born in 1911;  son of John ("Russian John") and Ellen Mary Eliza (nee Viney).  Frederick died in 1989 in Kent;  too many Frederick Howards to confirm a marriage for him.

Only the one sticks out in mine today.

On 18th January 1733, John Tweedie, the second child and eldest son of my 5xG grandparents Robert Tweedie and Katherine Dimmock was born in Carnwarth, Lanarkshire. I know very little about John apart from he was my 4xG grandfather Robert's brother and had another brother, Thomas and two sister's, Jean and Agnes. His father Robert was the first ancestor in my search that I knew for certain was born before the 1700's, being born in Lanarkshire in 1698.

Mine today are all really distant.

18th Feb 1727, a 7 x great aunt, Elizabeth Bland was born in Middleton in Teesdale

1827, 1st cousin, x4 - the delightfully named James Ovens was baptised in Spennithorne, North Riding of Yorkshire.

1902, James Barton who was, and get this for a tenuous connection, the husband of a third cousin, twice removed! What on earth does that mean. Thank heavens my tree programme works it out for me because I certainly couldn't!

Sarah Dye my 2 x g.g.aunt was baptised at St Mary’s Parish Church, Newton Flotman in 1816.  Her father was a butcher and she had 10 siblings.  The fifth became my 2 x g.grandmother.

Ann Day my 3 x g.g.aunt was baptised in Osbournby, Lincolnshire in 1787.

Elizabeth Singleton my 6 x g.g.aunt was baptised at St Peter’s Church, Huddersfield, Yorkshire in 1665.  Despite having at least 11 children, all baptised at St Peter’s Church (apart from the first who was baptised at Elland which is only about 5 miles from Huddersfield, I cannot find a birth or marriage anywhere for Elizabeth’s father, Caleb.

Samuel Cockett and Catherine Buckworth my 6 x g.grandparents married in Liddington, Rutland in 1694/95

Sarah Woodward my 3 x g.g.aunt married Thomas Hamlet at St Laurence Church, Frodsham, Cheshire in 1798

Ann Okey my 6 x g.g.aunt was baptised at Holy Trinity Church, Haddenham, Cambridgeshire in 1698/9.

Susanna Moss my husband’s 3 x g.grandmother died in Little Moor, Glossop, Derbyshire in 1842.  Her cause of death was an Apopleptic fit.  Her age was given as 66 but we have no proof this was her exact age, as she was employed as a housekeeper and it could be that she told her employer that was her age.  She was shown as 65 on the 1841 census, but that is rounded up/down. We cannot find any birth/baptism for her, the 1841 census shows she was not born in County, i.e. Cheshire.

Elizabeth Francke my 9 x g.g.aunt died in Morton by Bourne in 1587/88.  She was about 6 days old.

Yes, I think so, or perhaps an aneurysm that would cause a sudden death.

Married 1760, in Rafford, Morayshire, Alexander McBeath and Jean Duncan, my 5 x great grandparents.

Baptised 1787 in Portsea, Hampshire, George Grose. A 5 x great uncle.

It was a picture I found it Canada when visiting descendents of George Stubbs; and a lovely Rootschatter restored it for me.   I set about finding the house (via census etc).   Took one of the Canadian descendents with me; the houses in that row have been demolished, but the pavement is still there and the cobbles, and by enlarging the photo and the cobbles, we were able to work out exactly where the house had been from the pattern of the cobbles !!

Here is William Stubbs with his great grand-daughter Dorothy (b. 1942) added to the 1898 photo by another clever Rootschatter !   Dorothy died about four years ago ....

Nice pic Lydart.

On February 20th 1820 my 3xG grandparents Robert Tweedie and Agnes Weir married in West Calder, Midlothian. I have Robert back to his great grandparents in the 1600's but Agnes is proving a tougher nut to crack. I know she was known as Nancy and that she was born in Carnwarth, Lanarkshire in 1790 and had at least two siblings, both girls, one named Marion and another I have no name for at present. When she died in 1864 she had been widowed for 9 years and two of her children pre-deceased her. Her parents were James Weir and Grizzel Gardner. On her death certificate the name of her mother Grizzel has morphed to the Scottish/Anglisized version of Grace, a name that passed down to my mother's sister, my aunt Grace. James and Grizzel are where I am stumped at present and may possibly remain so. Agnes and Robert's youngest son John was my great great grandfather.

Winifride Francke died 1587/88.  She was the twin sister of Elizabeth Francke who died on yesterday’s date.  Winifride was about 7 days old.

Lydart - I suppose an Apopleptic fit could have been a severe epileptic fit, but most websites of old diseases etc. seem to imply it was some kind of paralysis caused by a stroke.

By the way, which street in Harpurhey did you decide your photo of the Stubbs was taken?

I'm busy most of tomorrow so this one is for 22nd Feb.     Mary Foyle born 1807, Witchampton, Dorset.   Her mother was Ann or Hannah Friggle or Triggle or Trygel !!    Various transcriptions give different spelling/mistranscriptions, so take your choice !

I don't know anything much about Mary, as she was the second Mary born to Ann(Hannah) and Joseph Foyle, so I assume the first Mary died, but cannot (yet) find deaths for either of them.

I was thinking that there would be thread for each day of the year, and events would then be added to the relevant date, but if every body else is happy with the way it is I have no axe to grind. I suppose the same thing could be achieved by having a separate thread for each day in "The Lighter Side".

PS thank you for starting it.

I think that a new thread for each day would be a bit complicated. It would need someone to remember to start it!

What I'm not sure of is what will happen when we get round to November, which is when I started the first one. Will we all just re-post the same anniversaries or will there be enough new people joining in to keep it fresh?

On 22nd February 1819 John Quincy Adams signed the agreement that Mexico would cede Florida to the United States.

I can only claim one "interesting" relative for this day, and he's only related by a couple of marriages so not a "real relative" - Teignmouth Melvill married Sarah Elizabeth Reed on 22nd February 1876 in Port Elizabeth. He was killed at Isandlhwana in 1879 and was awarded the VC for his part in attempting to save the Queen's colours - though the VC  was not awarded until 1907. The explanation being that the award of a posthumous VC was not possible in 1879.

Thomas Benson my 2 x g.g.uncle was baptised at St Mary’s Parish Church, Dalton in Furness, Lancashire.  Although his father was a farmer, Thomas became a miner – I guess it paid more, but he died aged 30 of TB.  Then again his father also died of TB some 10 years earlier.

Deborah Fleming my 6 x g.grandmother was baptised in Aldingham, Lancashire in 1691/92.  She had 7 children in 13 years and I suspect it was only the fact that my 6 x g.grandfather was a mariner and died 15 years after the marriage, that she didn’t have more.

Jonathan Spraggett my husband’s 3 x g.g.uncle was baptised in Leamington Hastings, Warwickshire in 1785.  His father was a farmer and a maltster.  He needed to be to keep the 15 children he and his wife produced, Jonathan being number 5.

Ann Woodward my 1st cousin 4 times removed was baptised in Frodsham, Cheshire in 1817.  Her father took over a public house called the Red Lion that was built by his parents in 1777.  It was an ancient alehouse that stood close to Norley Church.  Around 1830, the Woodhouses of Norley Hall purchased the land.  Various landlords ran the alehouse, until 1877 when it was passed by the Woodhouses to the Church Commissioners to use as the Vicarage!

Hannah Pemberton my g.aunt married Samuel Wilkinson at Manchester Cathedral in 1857.  One of Hannah’s sisters also married a Wilkinson, but as far as I can tell there was no connection between the two men.

John Harper Howard my husband’s 2 x g.g.uncle married Elizabeth Rice at St Nicholas Church, Liverpool, Lancashire in 1841.  John Harper Howard was the first son of his parents and Harper was his mother’s maiden name, whilst John was his paternal grandfather’s name.

Her father George was a mine manager in Dodworth and Carlton

When Diana only 5, her mother Sally died.
George remarried an unknown Ann.
George, having taken on the job at Carlton where he was responsible for starting the new mine on Lord Wharncliffe's land known as Carlton main, died in 1979.

By 1891, Stepmother Ann had disappeared and Dinah was living with her married sister Martha Andrews
A boarder in the same household was David Jones Williams, a commercial manager- colliery.

In 1892 Dinah and David married in Barnsley.

Dinah lived until 1933 and David 1938, they were living in the Sheffield area at that time

Christopher Haworth and Dorothy Mellor my husband’s 2 x g.grandparents married at Manchester Cathedral in 1843.  Both Christopher who was a warehouseman at the time of his marriage and Dorothy signed their own names, as did both witnesses, one of which was Dorothy’s father, also a labourer.  Christopher’s father was a printer so I guess is makes sense that he could write, but I’m surprised that a labourer and his child could write in 1843.  Christopher later became a Mercantile Clerk.  Dorothy, after having 9 children in 21 years, unfortunately died of a corroding ulcer of the rectum which she’d had for 5 years - which means it started soon after the birth of her last child – sounds very painful.

John Day my 3 x g.grandfather was baptised at St Peter & St Paul, Osbournby, Lincolnshire in 1793.  As he died on 21 February, buried 25 February (1874), there is more info about him on those dates.

Mary Lockwood my 3 x g.g.aunt was baptised at Cumberworth, Yorkshire in 1788.  Originally her father was a joiner, like his father before him, however Mary’s grandfather became a licensed victualler and when he died, her father took over.  I thought most of my ancestors were butchers and bakers, but since joining in with “On this day” I’ve found that many of them were brewers or inn keepers.

Hannah Mutton (nee Hisbrook) my 4 x g.grandmother was buried at All Saints Church, Holbeach in 1804 I know my 4 x g.grandfather was born in 1747 but I think she must have been younger as she had two children, one in 1787 and one in 1790, but I can’t find a birth/baptism for her.  On the parish record of her banns and marriage, it states she was “of this parish” i.e. Spalding, but then it states the same for my 4 x g.grandfather and he was baptised in Crowland and their first child was baptised in Holbeach.

Mary Benson my 6 x g.g.aunt was buried in Holme Cultram, Cumberland in 1697/98.  She was only one year old and was the first child born alive that I’ve found of my 7 x g.grandparents.  Fortunately, the 2nd child a son lived to marry and have 7 children, thus becoming my 6 x g.grandfather.  There was another child in the family baptised in 1700, but as no name was given, I assume he or she must have been ill at the time and possibly died.

On this day John Douglas(s) was born in 1814 to James Douglas and Mary nee Varnden
However he died in December 1839 of unknown cause in Egham.

He was presumably named after James's grandfather , the shadowy John Douglas who is the earliest known Douglas I have who could have lived anywhere as all I have is his name

THis John however was my great x 3 uncle

My little wire-haired terrier, Judy, would have been 60 today. :)

You never forget them do you Geoff.

Happy birthday Doran.

Three for February 25th. In 1809, Janet Brown, the elder sister of my 3xG grandfather Walter was born in Bo'ness.

In 1786, William Auld, the brother of my 4xG grandmother Janet was born in Linlithgow. He was the youngest child in the family.

In 1733, Andrew Bishop, the brother of my 5xG grandmother Agnes was born in Currie. His parents had moved there from Colinton where their first child was born.

Hmm... Can we have a little chat about your Butler link at some stage? CM's Butler family comes from that part of London so we could have a connection. I do know how common the name is but you never know! :D

Thanks NJ. :)

My main one today is the birthday of my maternal grandmother, Amelia Alice ( Cissy) Smith, born 25th February 1894 in Middlesbrough, daughter of John Smith and Sarah Ann Bland.

She married James Frost in 1914, shortly before the birth of her first daughter, my aunt Lily. Another daughter, Alice, was born in 1915.

During the war years, as well as bringing up two small children, she worked in a munitions factory. I have her clocking-in disc and one of her payslips as a treasured possession. :)
James Frost died in 1917, from the flu' which was so destructive during and after the Great War.

In 1919, Amelia married Thomas Smith ( son of John Smith and Harriet Knight) and went on to have four more children, my mum being the second one, in 1925. The marriage of my grandparents has given me the genealogist's nightmare of having two Smith lines to research, two great grandfathers called John Smith and two great grandfathers called William Smith!

My mother could be quite vitriolic when talking about her own mum. Apparently Amelia wasn't above going out when her husband was on night shift, leaving four small children at home. She liked her drink ( I inherited that trait then!) and apparently was a bit of a flirt as well. ( I am being kind here - the stories are less forgiving).

Tom Smith died as the result of a tragic accident at work in 1941, leaving Amelia widowed for the second time. She died in 1945 at the age of fifty-one. She was described as a hard, sharp-tongued woman, not very loving and quick to lash out. I say, living as she did in poverty and hardship, who can blame her. I never met her but it is my decision to love her nevertheless.

Post by: LizzieW on Monday 25 February 13 15:37 GMT (UK)
genjen - She doesn't look as if she started her adult life as a hard, sharp-tongued woman, not very loving and quick to lash out, does she?  As you say circumstances can change anyone.

Christopher Collett my 1st cousin 3 times removed was baptised in Mettingham, Suffolk in 1836

Anne Sharp (nee Gilchrist) my 3 x g.g.aunt was baptised at St Mark’s Church, Frampton, Lincolnshire in 1808.  She was the 2nd child in the family to be called Anne, although the first one didn’t have the letter e at the end of her name.  She died aged 18 months.

Hannah Lockwood my 2 x g.g.aunt was baptised at St Nicholas Church, Cumberworth, Yorkshire in 1815.  She was sister to Elizabeth Lockwood my 2 x g.grandmother who was baptised 3 7ears later but on 1st February.  Info about the family is shown on that day.

William Hobson my 5 x g.g.uncle was baptised at St Peter’s Church, Huddersfield, Yorkshire in1704/5

John Day my 3 x g.grandfather was buried at All Saints Church, Holbeach, Lincolnshire in 1874.  I did visit the graveyard a few years back and found my 2 x g.grandmother’s grave (John’s daughter) who died in 1844, but I didn’t find John, or his wife’s grave – she died in 1849. I would have expected it to be near to their daughter’s grave as from the wording on her grave it is apparent that they were the ones who bought her gravestone as she is shown as their daughter, before being mentioned as wife of Charles Cockett.

Martin Batty and Elizabeth Bagshaw my 5 x g.grandparents were married at Ecclesfield, Yorkshire in 1732/33 – according to Familysearch.org, ref index and sourcing film available, but I am not near to one of their places to view this record.  I have no idea why they married in Ecclesfield, as both of them were born and baptised in Penistone and both died in Denby Dale and were buried in Penistone, as were their parents and siblings.  I can only find one child for them so far, my 4 x g.grandmother who was baptised at Penistone in 1737.  I’m sure they must have had more children, perhaps in Ecclesfield before returning to Penistone.  Unfortunately, neither FindMyPast nor Ancestry have Ecclesfield baptisms on their sites yet but I live in hope.

I'm in and out all day tomorrow, so can I put tomorrows special one today ??

Mary Anne Trowbridge, my great grandmother, was born 26th February, 1846, Cole Hill, Wimborne Minster, Dorset.   Just to make things difficult for me in her future, she married a John Williams !   (Mary and John Williams !!   .... almost as bad as Mary and John Smith !)

She is my Dorset Button maker     http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,300158.0.html    and taught her grand-daughter, my mother, how to make 'high tops' as well as other things; my mother taught me, and I have taught my daughter !

Mary Anne had 13 children according to the 1911 census, but I have only been able to find ten of them.   She and John moved from Dorset to Hampshire, and then around the time of WW1, moved to be with several of their children in S. Wales.    They both died in the 1930's in Risca, but with such common names for Wales, I have never been able to exactly pin-point their deaths or graves.

I have just three photo's of Mary, including this one with the lace collar .... and I have the lace collar .... a very precious heirloom, plus a lace edged hankie of hers, embroidered with her initials.   She looks SO like my mother at a similar age, its uncanny !

I find it strange that I moved here to S. Wales not knowing any of her history, and am now living only about 20 miles from where she did !

Today I have just one:

John Munro Raitt was born in 1837, Old Machar, Aberdeenshire. A 3 x great uncle of whom I know little except that he was the legitimate son of James Raitt and Christian Crichton, which is more than can be said for some of his "siblings". James Raitt fathered several offspring outside of his marriage, Christian Chrichton raised them as her own!
John married Margaret Allen and had eight children. He died in 1905 in Newhills, Aberdeenshire.

Benjamin Collett my 2 x g.g.uncle married Bertha Philpot in Fressingfield, Suffolk in 1824.  They had 7 children but, unfortunately, Bertha died in 1834 either during or shortly after the birth of their 7th child.

Martha Stanton my 2 x g.g.aunt and George Bonnetts Abrahams were married in Pinchbeck, Lincolnshire in 1844

Clement Tubbs my 2 x g.g.uncle was baptised at All Saints Church, Holbeach, Lincolnshire in 1822.  He died aged 2½.  He was the 4th child of my 3 x g.grandfather and his first wife.  My 3 x g.grandfather had already fathered a child, before he married his first wife,  my 2 x g.grandfather, but he had not married his mother.

Clara Pemberton my 1st cousin twice removed died in Eccles, Lancashire in 1891 aged 9 months.

Edward Jackson was born in 1860 in Hawk Green, Marple, Cheshire to George Jackson who would become a mine manager and Sally nee Booth

Edwards moved with his parents in the 1870's to the Barnsley area of Yorkshire, but Sally died in 1874 and George in 1879.

By 1881 Edward was an assistant colliery manager in Barnsley.
In 1888 he was awarded his certificate of competency at Silkstone near Barnsley.
By Jan 1890 he was undermanager at Hyde Colliery in Cheshire at the time of the explosion that killed 23 people. Edward found some of the bodies himself and was called to give evidence at the inquest on two days, and again for a final question later.
A first floodlit football match was held between Ardwick (now Man C) and Newton Heath (Now Man U) at Bell Vue, 10,000 attended, in aid of the victims families. This was the first floodlit Manchester derby match

At this time he was living in Hyde with Ann Aldous nee Lee as husband and wife
I have written here before about Ann's disappearing first Husband William Aldous.
In March my grandfather was born - Harry Jackson.

In 1899 he became the colliery manager at Breightmet near Bolton, Lancs,
In 1911 he was manager of a mine in Pendleton, Lancashire.
By 1918 he had become the manager of the Lingard Lane Colliery in Bredbury near Stockport, Cheshire. He died there in 1921 of Cancer of the Oesophagus.
I believe he had shortly previously left the mine and was presented with a clock. Unfortunately this was not preserved from a great aunts belonging when she died.

He was also briefly a mason.

My grandfather, John Robert Barham, was born in 1880 in Holborn;  son of George and Elizabeth Mary Ann (nee Burgess). He was baptised the next month at St Paul, Clerkenwell. He joined the Army in September 1898 and served for just 16 days before buying himself out at a cost of £10; not sure how the money was raised as his father was only a labourer.   He married Matilda Alice Eva Pain in 1905 at St Mark, Old Street and they had 7 children. John lost a daughter and his wife to TB within 7 weeks; one of his sons was lost in WW2 but the rest of his children lived to a good age;  his youngest (my dad) is still going strong at 89.  John died in 1961 in Uxbridge and is buried in Pinner New Cemetery.

John Dameron and Margaret Felton my 10 x g.grandparents married in Westerfield, Suffolk in 1552
In the History of Suffolk Families, it states “The last of that name (Dameron) a gentleman of 500 pounds or 600 pounds a year .....”   So he was worth a bob or two,  ::) some of which he got from his father, who left him £400 plus other items.  His father also left £100 each to each of his 3 daughters and various grandchildren.  John and Margaret had 3 children, but only one survived to adulthood and she was the one who it was determined was fatua et ideota from birth, so in his will he left his manor house to his eldest grandson.

James Wilmot and Priscilla Crane my 8 x g.grandparents married in Cheshunt, Hertfordshire in 1652/3.   They had a daughter, Mary, born in 1655 in Cheshunt and then at some stage they moved to Cambridgeshire.  James was born about 1629, but Priscilla was baptised in 1626, so in 1672 she would have been about 46.  She apparently had a child in 1672 and then she died about 6 months later.  Whether the child born in 1672 was actually Priscilla’s child or whether it was Mary’s who would have been 17 at the time I don’t know.  The child, Lydia – my 7 x g.grandmother was baptised as James and Priscilla’s child.

Hannah Dawson my husband’s g.g.aunt was baptised at Manchester Cathedral in 1850.  Her father’s occupation was given as Brewer.  This is not correct as he was always a groom from the earliest records to his death in 1873.  On his son’s baptism record in 1845 he was shown as a Hostler and I wonder if this was misheard as hostelry in 1850 and so brewer was written down in error.

Richard Whittaker my husband’s 3 x g.grandfather died in Cheshire in 1836.  We have no record of Richard prior to his marriage, nor of his wife.  On the 1841 census she was shown as not born in County and, of course, Richard died prior to that census so we have no clue as to where he came from, although there were other Whittaker’s in Cheshire and Derbyshire who might be connected.  We assume Richard was a hatter as his siblings all became hatters and he lived in the right area.

Florrie Whittaker my husband’s g.aunt was buried in February 1892 in Christ Church, Denton, Lancashire aged about 1 month old.  We haven’t got her death certificate so don’t know the cause of her death.

On January 25th 1778, George Auld, the brother of my 4xG grandmother Janet was born in Linlithgow. The 7th of 8 children, his two eldest siblings were twin girls, one would die and one survive. This scenario was replicated with my grandmother and her twin sister.

Today is my brother Gordon's birthday. Born in Falkirk, he died aged only 24 in a car crash in Norway. He lies there still, far from home but in a place he was happy.

I shall light my usual candle.

My gt. aunt, Sophia Alice Kingsman was born in 1897 in Kensington; daughter of John and Annie (nee George). She married a soldier, Thomas Frederick Pembrey, in 1918 at St. Clements, Kensington and 2 daughters were born, the second one dying as a baby.  She divorced Thomas in late 1920s and later married Henry Ovenden.  Sophia died in 1977.

My 2xgt. aunt Eliza Burgess was born in 1861 in London, daughter of Robert Richard and Elizabeth (nee Gandy). Eliza died in 1864.

Richard Henry Gillians, a 1st cousin 2R was born in Woolwich in 1899, son of James William and Edith (nee Rainer). The family emigrated to Canada; Edith already had a brother and sister in the country.  He married in 1924 in Montreal and died in 1971 in Quebec.

My cousin, Gwendoline Troy Barham, born in 1938 in London;  daughter of Alfred Ernest and his first wife, Ada Beatrice (nee Reed). She married in 1956 and had 2 children. Gwendoline was found dead in Manchester in 1989. There was an Inquest held but I am unable to see the report as I am not a close enough relation.

I'll have to put this one on today:

29th February 1824 my 3x great grandparents Samuel Bills and Ann Bates married in St Giles Without Cripplegate. Samuel was born in Grantham Lincolnshire and Ann in Spalding. I dont know what took them to London but by 1841 Samuel was a Licenced Victualler at The White Lion 17 Upper Thames Street St Benet Pauls Wharf,  and in 1851 at 96 Pennington St, Tower Hamlets, St George in The East. Ann died in 1852  and unfortunately by 1861 Samuel was in the workhouse and died in 1868 aged 70.

Minnie Brand my 1st cousin twice removed was born in Harpurhey, Manchester in 1890.

Mary Daintree my 8 x g.g.aunt was baptised in Haddenham, Cambridgeshire in 1640/41

Charles Dyke my husband’s 4 x g.g.uncle was born in Hatton, Warwickshire in 1772

Richard Whittaker my husband’s 3 x g.grandfather was buried at Hatherlow Congregational Chapel, Hatherlow, Stockport, Cheshire in 1836.  His age at death (2 days previously) was given as 66 but we have not yet found a birth as we don’t know where he came from.

I'm a grandchild of John Robert Barham (b.1880), who was the baby brother of Elizabeth Barham (b 1866) who married William Hosler in 1884.

Does that help?

Hi Nanny Jan

Did Elizabeth and William have sons Tommy and David?

My grandmother (daughter of George and Constance Hosler) remembers Elizabeth

I hope this is the connection

Mr Dando

Hi,

There was David (1906 - 1974) and Thomas (1908 - 1986).  I've found 14 children for William and Elizabeth.
I think you need to make 1 more posting before we can use the PM system.

Thanks Bob, I was about to ask if I could add to the February thread!

As mentioned my 4 x great grandparents Samuel Crowsley and Catherine Childs were married on 1st February 1786 in Willington, Bedfordshire, not Kempston, as I mistakenly put in the database.  After Catherine's death in 1819, he married Elizabeth Tompkins.

On 2 February 1901 my first cousin 1 x removed, Henry John Conquest, was born in Clapham, Surrey.  He was the son of Edwin Arthur and Louisa Mary Ann (nee Smith).  I don't know much about him, except that he married twice, first in 1925 and then in 1967, three years before his death.

On 6 February 1831 my great great aunt Harriet Wilson was baptised at Hoxton St John, London.  She was the daughter of Robert and Harriet (nee Sewell).  I have her marriage to William Henry Manners in 1854 but after that she disappears, as does William Henry, except for some possibilities in London Electoral Registers.

On 8 February 1852 my great great uncle Henry Conquest was born in Blunham, Bedfordshire, the son of James and Susan (nee Crisp).  I have him in 1871 with his parents, aged 19, but cannot find him after that.  Some family trees have a death for him in 1872, but without a death certificate I can't be sure, and even then there might be no way of knowing if it was the right person.

Just a mention of my great uncle Kit ( Christopher Wilberforce Smith) who was born on this day in 1898, in Middlesbrough. I posted this anniversary in the thread last year but since then I have looked at the Bedfordshire Regiment's movements during July 1917 and I now know that he died either in action at Zillebeke, or near Bedford House, en route back to the 2nd Battalion's base at Chateau Segard, just South West of Ieper. I have contacted the owner of the web site which has this information to see if he knows any more but haven't had a reply yet.

Thinking about you today Kit. Nineteen was too young to die.

On 13 February 1918 my first cousin 3 x removed, Emma Conquest, died in Saginaw, Michigan, USA, aged 74.  She was born in Cardington, Bedfordshire, in 1843 and emigrated with her parents, Josiah and Martha (nee Brampton) in 1853.  She never married, but seems to have looked after several nieces and nephews, as well as her brother Thomas, who also remained single.

On 14 February 1855 John Conquest, my great great uncle, died in Bedford, aged only five.  Apparently he fell into a fire and didn't recover from the burns - how sad.  His mother Susan was pregnant at the time and a son, also named John, was born in August.

In 1888 Amelia Clara Bonnard, my first cousin 1 x removed, was born in Shoreditch, London.  She was the daughter of Charles Jules Victor and Mary Ann Eliza (nee Marshall).  Charles was born in France and worked as a chef.

In 1902 Sarah Gertrude Ashwell, my second cousin 2 x removed, was born in Bedford, Bedfordshire, the daughter of Charles James and Mary Elizabeth (nee Coles).  I have only recently found this branch and don't know much about the family.

On 16 February

In 1807 Josiah Conquest, my 2 x g.g uncle, was born in Cardington, Bedfordshire, the son of William and Martha (nee Thomason). He later emigrated to America with his wife and seven of their children.  He was a farmer in Birch Run, Michigan.

In 1833 Robert Wilson, my g.g uncle, was born in Hoxton, London, the son of Robert and Harriet (nee Sewell).

In 1900 Eleanor Maude Kathleen Marshall, my aunt, was born in Leytonstone, Essex.  She was the daughter of Samuel Robert and Louise Maude Mary (nee Conquest).  Known as Nellie, she was ten years old when the next child, my mother, was born, although I suspect there was a child born between them.  In the 1911 census it says one of their six children has died, but of course I've no idea when this would have been.  I never knew Aunt Nellie, as my mother didn't keep in touch with her.  She died in 1980.

On this day in 1879 my paternal grandfather, Percival Wilson, was born in Hackney, London, the son of Frederic Sewell Wilson and Clara Rosina (nee Giovannelli).  He was a loving grandpa to me and my brother and sister, and we used to enjoy visiting him and grandma in Leytonstone.  I was the eldest granddaughter and he always made an extra fuss of me, I think because I reminded him of the two daughters who had died in their thirties, leaving them with just sons.

One of the ladies who sold me a glass angel for my Christmas tree was one of the first people we saw on our TV . I have a good bit of the Cathedral on film and of  the little children  putting presents under the tree and singing carols .There was a lot there that day

On 23 February 1883 my 2 x great grandmother, Catherine Ashwell, died in Bedford, aged 65.  She started her working life as a laundry maid at the Bedford County Lunatic Asylum and was there at the time of the 1841 census, but left when she married William Crowsley later that year.  I had some difficulty finding her on later censuses because she was also known sometimes as Kitty, and the name Crowsley had many variations.

On 26 February 1681 my 6 x great grandfather, Thomas Ashwell, was born in Cardington, Bedfordshire, the son of Matthias (or Matthew) and Elizabeth or Sarah.  According to records on Ancestry he was baptised on the same day a year later in 1682, but I'm not sure whether this is right. Information this far back is rather sketchy, but I count myself lucky to have found this much!

On 27 February 1889 my second cousin 1 x removed, Alice Martha Lydia Rogers, married Joseph John Donoughue at Upper Holloway St John, London.  His occupation was acrobat!  In the 1891 census I have found them using the name Leopold, so think they were involved with the Leopold Brothers acrobatic troupe.  Living with them is Kate Rogers, Alice's sister, an actress.  Just last week I found Kate in the 1911 census (no longer an actress, but a clerk!) with a Joseph William Donoughue in the same household.  I believe this is Alice and Joseph's son, who was aged 1 in 1891.

Hi, I am new to this site so hope I am doing this ok. George Woodward and Mary Bell were also my 4x gr grandparents. I was at Norley today and was looking at their grave in St. Johns churchyard. I would love to find out which line you are from.  Sue

Sue - Welcome to Rootschat.

George Woodward and Mary Bell had 9 children, that I know of.  I am descended from their son John born 1771, baptised 1 June 1771 at St Laurence Church, Frodsham, died 17 Jan 1848 at Crowton and buried on 21 Jan 1848 at Frodsham.  He married Elizabeth Hayes and they had 8 children.  Their 4th child Elisabeth (Betsy) Woodward was my 2 x g.grandmother.  She married Peter Pemberton.  They had 11 children, and number 6, Alice Pemberton, was my g.grandmother.  She married Seth Hobson.  They had 6 children, number 3, Mary Hannah Hobson was my grandmother.

I hope this helps.
