Hello listers
Does anyone know anything at all (no matter how trivial) about the above hospitals? My older siblings were born at Wharenana Hospital, Hataitai, in the late 1940s, that information gleaned from their birth notices in the newspaper. The only reference I have found to this hospital is a death at Whare Nana Private Hospital, Kensington St. My map does not put Kensington St as Hataitai. I was born in the Bethany Hospital on Kensington St, I have written to the Salvation Army for any information, haven't heard back yet, but any information from you would be welcome. Any photos would be doubly welcome.
Regards
Helen

Hi Janette
No, I hadn't seen it, thank you so much, precious photos.
Wharenana remains a mystery.

There was a Wharenana Nursing Hospital in Timaru.

Thank you twiggytree, the one I am after was definitely Wellington.

This article is not specific on where the Whare-nana it mentions is, but I wonder if tracing the two nurse's who appear to have run and owned it, might net something?

That one appears to be the one in Timaru http://www.rootschat.com/links/0ssb/

Hi and thanks again twiggytree, in the article this Wharenana was turned into flats in 1928 so it can't be the one I am after (1946-1949). Wharenana Timaru was up for sale in 1920 so could be that one.

That is interesting reading. I see that there were a lot of small private maternity hospitals with only a few beds, so I may never know, but it is worth trying.

Hi Helen,
I was born at Wharenana Private Hospital 9 Hinau Road Wellington - this is noted on my birth certificate. I believe it closed in the early 1950s.
