Title: swain
Post by: tinabrown1953 on Wednesday 30 January 13 05:40 GMT (UK)
Could I please have the 1901 census info for Ellen Swain b 1871 Yorkshire (spouse Frank).
Would like to know where she was born and where living.

Also the 1871 census for Charlotte Swain b 1832 Belper Derbyshire. (household no 347)
Trying to find husband's name. She was widowed by 1881 but has child aged 4 by then.

1871 (not easy to read this page)

Butler's Hill, Hucknall, Notts.

RG10 piece 3491 folio 61 page 51 (Schedule #347)

Charlotte SWAIN / Head / Unmarried / 39 / Belper
William do / Son / 16 / Dudley
Frank do / Son / 15 / Cinderhill
Hannah do / Dau / 8 / Ripley[?]
Joseph do / Son / 3 / Hucknall
Absalom do / Son / 10[or 16?] months / Hucknall

(Definitely shows Charlotte as "Unm" - that's quite clear ...)

2 possibles...

there is a marriage in Derby  for 1st quarter March of 1853 to a William Fritchley or William Heath 7b509

which is sorta about the period charlotte would have married if born in 1832

anyway it would warrant further investigation as i might be clutching straws....

Belper DBY 1837 1974 Belper

theres one in september 1860 william swain  at belper  7b612   spouse missing in freebduk

This Charlotte Swain married William Heath, and can be found with him on subsequent censuses up to 1891, so she can be ruled out.

William Swain married Alice Howarth.

I think I've possibly found Charlotte with the two oldest children in 1861:

RG09/2434/45 /22
30 Holden Square, Greasley, Notts

Aaron CARY  Head  27  Coal Miner  b. Ripley, Derbyshire
Charlotte CARY  Wife  23  b. Belper, Derbyshire
William CARY  Son  3  b. Oldhill, Staffordshire
Francis CARY  Son  1  b. Greasley

Aaron is on the 1841 and 1851 censuses with his parents in Ripley, when the surname is given as KERRY, and his death registration is also under KERRY in 1880.

However, I can't spot him in 1871, and I can't see a marriage to Charlotte...  ???

As Aaron didn't die until 1880, it looks as though he and Charlotte separated prior to 1871.

There are possible birth registrations for all the older children as KERRY, but Absolom's birth seems to be registered both under SWAIN and KELLEY.

Interesting!

From FamilySearch:

Frank SWAIN (22), son of Aaron SWAIN, married Ellen WHITHAM (19), daughter of William WHITHAM, on 6 April 1889 in Wakefield.

Married after Banns - 6th April 1889 - St Andrew's Church, Wakefield
Frank SWAIN / 22 / Bachelor / Miner / Stanley Road / Aaron SWAIN / Miner
Ellen WHITHAM / 19 / Spinster / Stanley Road / William WHITHAM / Moulder
Witnesses: G. BROOK & Annie WOODWARD

All signed

So, if Frank was honest about his age, this may be him ...

Births Mar 1868
SWAIN, Frank Wilson
Chesterfield 7b 535

There aren't really any other births that fit for that time. On the other hand he might not have been telling the truth ...

Charlotte's son Frank would have been 33/34 in 1889 ...
Although in the census he does appear to have aged from 26 in 1891 to 45 in 1901!
And in 1911 he is 50 ... wife Ellen's age seems to be consistent through the years ...

Thanks for the 1861 census info - definitely confuses things.
I'll add all the info you have given me to my family history sheet.

I think Frank's birth was probably registered as KERRY, although it seems unlikely that Aaron and Charlotte married:

Not sure about that birth because Ancestry and Freebmd has a death for a Frank Kerry in Radford in Dec 1/4 1870 aged 0 which sounds like could be this one.

Hmmmm, yes - missed that!   :(

To be honest, the only birth registration I'm 100% sure of is Absolom's, as the whole family is pretty vague about their age on census!

Frank Wilson SWAIN married twice (1891 and 1900), and is on the 1901 census with 2nd wife Annie, so it's not him either...  ???

Looks like Charlotte's son William married Mary Ann HURST in 1882. His marriage certificate would be useful, if it shows his father's name and occupation.

Marriages Jun 1882 / Basford 7b 286
BREEDON, Henry / MOODY, Sarah Ann
SWAIN, William / HURST, Mary Ann

(Henry BREEDON is with wife Sarah Ann in 1891).

1891 / RG12 piece 3747 folio 15 page 23 / 3 Camplin Yard, Stanley cum Wrenthorpe, Wakefield
SWAIN, William / Head / M / 34 / Coal Miner / Oldhill, Staffordshire
SWAIN, Mary A / Wife / M / 37 / Fairley, Staffordshire
SWAIN, Annie / Dau / 7 / Scholar / Hucknall Torkard, Staffordshire
SWAIN, Charlotte / Dau / 5 / Scholar / Hucknall Torkard, Staffordshire
SWAIN, Sarah A / Dau / 2 / Denaby Main, Yorkshire
SWAIN, Edward / Son / 7m / Denaby Main, Yorkshire

(Hucknall Torkard is actually in Nottinghamshire, not Staffordshire as the enumerator has written).

Aagh, just realised I posted the wrong birth reg for Frank - 10 years too late for the 1861 family!

Try this one:

Births Mar 1860
KERRY  Frank
Basford 7b 87

And brother William:

Births Jun 1858
KERRY  William
Basford 7b 105

Sorry about that!   :-[

Thanks for the info on William.

Ancestry has a Charlotte b 1838 Belper Derbyshire.
Also a death entry for a Charlotte b 1834 and dying in 1882 which seems most likely the right one.
You have been very helpful and I appreciate it

Jane SWAIN / Wife / Mar / 37 / Belper
