Title: Brighton St Nicholas TAYLOR Baptism Lookup
Post by: royOfBristol on Saturday 26 January 13 09:38 GMT (UK)
Hi all
Could someone with access to the St Nicholas records please look for a THOMAS TAYLOR, the son of ELIAS and DIANNA, who should have been baptised some time around 1830. All his brothers and sisters seem to be baptised there, but the FamilySearch site (which seems to be the only online source) doesn't have him in there. I'm hoping the transcribers have missed him.
Thanks in advance
Roy

I can't see a Thomas.  Three children born to an Elias book seller of Russell St and wife Elizabeth are James, 1813, Sarah 1817 and Mary 1821.  That Elias died age 57 in 1825.
Then Elias labourer and wife Dianna have three.  William 1812, Elizabeth 1824 and James 1829.  Maybe they moved to a different parish?

Hi Sillgen
Thanks for that. In 1841 they were living in Trafalgar Court - opposite the station, I think. Isn't that still the St Nicholas parish?

Does Thomas's M/C name his Father as Elias?
Do you have the Cert?
Relationships are not shown on 1841 Census and by 1851 Thomas is not with Elias/David/James in Brighton.
(noticed some Trees do not have the 1851 for Elias and Family, Dianna is not at Home and they are still in Trafalgar St)

Hi Trish
M/c does indeed have Elias on it. Thomas disappeared after 1841 until the marriage in 1857.
Diana was living with daughter Elizabeth Spering in Hackney in 1851. Elizabeth was witness to Thomas's marriage in 1857 as Spering, so they all tie up - its just a missing baptism for Thomas.
Another puzzle is why I cant find Diana's burial in 1870 or Elias' (sometime between 1861 and 1871 I'm guessing). Maybe there's another church involved somewhere?

Thanks Roy,
So you dont have the 1851 Census for Thomas?
He appears to be with a Brother GEORGE born c 1828 Brighton, Occp Plumber.
Thomas is down as born c 1833 Brighton.
HO107/1637/161/33

1861 Census George is in Middlesex with Brother WILLIAM born c 1824 Brighton.

So by these Census entries George/Thomas/William appear to be Brothers.

I followed that lot before I worked it all out (which took ages!).
There may be a lot of Taylors, but very few Eliases and even fewer Dianas. Not only can't I find their burials, the marriage and both their births have proved impossible. Thats why I was wondering about other (independent?) churches?

Hopefully someone can help you with Churches, not my area of expertise, sorry.

Children of Elias & Elizabeth / Elias & Diana, reaffirmed from Sussex Family History Group baptismal database.
Elias (Bookeeper-clerk in a brewhouse) & Elizabeth had James 1813, Sarah 1817, Mary 1821
Elias (Labourer) & Diana, had William 1823 Albion St, Elizabeth 1824 Gloucester Lane, James 1829 Albion Cottage, then Add DAVID TAILOR 1827 Albion St.

Diana appears on the 1841 census of St Peters district Brighton as Diannah Taylor born CIRCA 1806.  Elias as born CIRCA 1791
