Title: Can anyone decipher this (Dutch?) woman's maiden name?
Post by: John1967 on Thursday 24 January 13 14:39 GMT (UK)
I need some help to try to read some of this section of a Scottish birth register that lists the parents' names. I can read this:

William Postma
Seaman

Carolina Postma
M S (problem name)

1856 December 9th
Greenock

William Postma was Dutch, so I'm thinking his Carolina was also Dutch. But I cannot come up with a credible interpretation of that maiden name. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

Horrible handwriting!

My best guess is K**kielsbergen

Had another thought! ;D
Looking at the "W" of William, is it possible her name was Von Vielsbergen?

I agree with Youngtug...I see an "R" at the end.

It's Kukelsberger on the IGI - might be worth checking the marriage for them, it might be a bit clearer (assuming it can be found!)

I see it as KuKelsberger, i.e., the third letter as a capital.

Wondering whether this means Ku is a prefix, like other nations
use Mac or de or von?

I've never seen Ku as a prefix, just van, van de etc, claytonbradley

Exactly my thoughts!

If you compare the W of William, and then imagine half of it, the 1st and 3rd letters could well be V's?

Hence Von (or Van) Veldberger/n.

Von is German.
Van tends to be Dutch.

Baptisms, Greenock RFW:
George William Postman 6 Mar 1859, and Christina Postma 24 Jun 1861,
parents in each case William Postma(n), Carolina Kukelsberger.

Now I am left wondering whether there is any difference in this
handwriting between 'K' and 'k'. Oh dear.

I found the name to be Kukelsberger on the Scotland's People website. Thanks to all who replied (and so quickly).
