Title: Marriage Problem
Post by: maggie-may on Wednesday 23 January 13 20:59 GMT (UK)
On the Irish Civil reg. Indexes I have been trying to find the spouse for

Anne M'Grath New Ross marr. Jul - Sep 1888, vol 4 page 343 but found no matches

Mary M'Grath New Ross marr. Jul -Sep 1888 Vol 4, page no.341  I found 4 matches

Anne Magrath  New Ross  marr. Jul- Sep 1888 Vol.4 page 342  I found 4 matches

I have no idea who Anne married so I'm totally confused as to where to go from here.

Did the three women stay in Ireland or did they emigrate?

I don't know if any of these women are related. I was only interested in Anne M'Grath's marriage.
I found two Anns but no matches  for one of them.

I’d be inclined to order the certs, and then judge from the fathers’ names and the brides’ townlands whether they are the women you are looking for and whether they are related to each other. You can get a photocopy of each cert for €4 from GRO Roscommon provided you give them the year, quarter, location, volume & page numbers (which you obviously already have). Put that information clearly on the order form.

Thank you Elwyn Soutter for replying and your advice. I think it must be an error in transcription  and that Anne M'Grath page 343 and Anne Magrath page 342 are possibly the same person.

As the page numbers are different it's more likely 2 separate marriages.

Hi Aghadowey,

Thank you for replying. I cannot understand why there are no matches for Anne M'Grath page 343

What details do you have on 'your' Anne, is she an ancestor ?

Without some clue to her husbands name you will need the certs to check if there's match - usually using the details like father's name & occupation, or address at the time of marriage

Hi Shane,

I have just started checking out All Ann/Anne McGraths who could possibly have been an ancestor. father's name James , mother's name Joanna.

Sorry you've lost me... If Anne is a possible ancestor do you not know her husbands surname at least ?

Maybe start with a search for slightly more recent records - do you have details on the next generation after Anne ?

looking back at your previous posts, and wonder if maybe this Anne might be a sibling to your greatgrandmother Margaret, rather than a direct ancestor.

Quote
My greatgrandparents were Michael Rossiter and Margaret Rossiter nee Mc grath

If you are sure Margaret's sister was Anne, and she married in 1888 in New Ross then as Elwyn mentioned, the best way to  verify this, or not, is to order a cert and she if the father's details match up..

Hi Shane,
no I don't think she was a sister of my g/grandmother because of the time span. I shall order the cert and see what it throws up.

many thanks to you all for your help
