The Mackenzie family are all living at number 7 Rereabhach, Lochbroom, Ross- Shire, Scotland in the 1901 census. The parents are John and Margaret Mackenzie.
I'm just wondering if three of the children left the UK to go to Canada or the USA, but I am unable to access the records without purchasing a worldwide subscription - and hope that maybe some kind person out there might be able to help me 8) 8) 8)
The children in question are:
Peter Mackenzie, born 1897, Lochbroom.
Simon Mackenzie, born 1898, Lochbroom.
Rodena Mackenzie, born 1901, Lochbroom.
All three names come up with the following: Detroit Border Crossings and Passenger and Crew Lists, 1905 - 1957 record.
In addition, Simon's name comes up with the following: Canada Ocean Arrivals (Form 30A) 1919 - 1924 Record.

The Simon Mackenzie on the Ocean Arrivals cards lists his destination as Moose Jaw Saskatchewan, but also lists his father Allan in Inverness as his contact so I don't think this is your Simon...
The Rodina Mackenzie on the Detroit cards IS your Rodena. She lists her birth place as Lochbroom,
father as John at Ferry Inn, Ullapool(?) Scotland. Heading to her sister Mrs (Ivanville?) at 4810 Fernwood (no city, assume Detroit?) Rodena is 27 years 8 months old and a telephone operator who was living in London Ontario. She lists her date of landing at Nov 20 1926 at Quebec onboard the Montclair.
I cannot find a Peter or Simon to match yours in the Detroit cards....
-
Rodena did arrive on the Montclair on the date provided on the border crossing document. The image can be found on ancestry.ca. She is indexed as Rhedina Mac??
It shows that she was a nurse in Scotland and was going to the Salvation Army Lodge in Toronto and her intended occupation - domestic. Under settlement schemes women came in as domestics and men as farmers.

Hi,
If you would like to see the image of the passenger list that cosmac found, it is available for free at the Library and Archives Canada site. On the search page, she is listed as Rhodina Mackenzie. Here is the link to the image. She is number 10 on this page.

Thank you RunKitty - this looks like the Rodena Mackenzie I am researching.

Hi,
The image of the border crossing found by cccarson is on the familysearch site too. You can see it for free from this page.

Hi again,
Just having a look through the Detroit border crossing records on familysearch... I have no idea if this Peter is yours or not, but in 1933, he says he is 34 years old and was born in Rosshire. His mother is Margaret MacKenzie, living in Inverness. This is the right birth place and approximate birth year and mother's name. It says he was in the US before - from 1929-1933.

Again, RunKitty - many thanks.
I am 99.99% certain, that this is the Peter Mackenzie I am researching.
Perhaps Margaret's husband has died, and she is living in Inverness.
I'll have to do a little more digging...................

I wonder which sister Rodina was going to live with - would it be possible to find out from the address?
Rodina had four sisters, Katie (Catherine?), Bella (Isabella?), Mary Ellen and Alexina (Alexandrina?)
Why does every question answered give more questions ::) ::) ::)
-
Hi,
I am not amazing at all... others did all the work finding the records in the first place :) :).
I had another look at the border card and I think the sister's last name is actually Goodwillie. My first guess had also been Ivanville. However, I didn't see any families by that name in Detroit - doing a census search on the familysearch site. However, there are several Goodwillie families in the Detroit area in 1930 and 1940.
Do you have birth year information for the sisters? That could help.

The 1930 Detroit US census shows Alex Goodwillie (38) b. Scotland with wife Mary (35) b. Scotland. His immigration year is 1906 and hers is 1914. There is a Canadian passenger list with an arrival of a Mary McKenzie with her destination shown as Brantford. Hard to know if this is her.
A family tree on ancestry (perhaps accessible through the free Mundia site) shows that Mary Ellen Mackenzie b. Sep 1895 Ullapool Cromarty d. 1999 (no location given) married Alexander Hay Goodwillie b. 09 May 1888 Elgin, Scotland and died 1955 Detroit.
2 boys and 1 girl to this marriage. If you looked at the 1940 census at FamilySearch you should be able to pull up the Christian names of the children. Since they were born 1929 and later they can only be referred to as T., G. (boys) and E. (girl).
The 1930 census also shows that the marriage had taken place when Alex was 35 and his age on the 1930 census was 38.
-
Hi,
Alexander's middle name seems to be Gunn. His WW2 draft card is on familysearch. The address matches with the address on the 1940 census (image also available on familysearch). His birthdate is the same as the one mentioned in the tree found by cosmac.

The Find a Grave site has a record for Mary Ellen Mackenzie Goodwillie. she died on Jan 31 1999 and she is buried in the White Chapel Memorial Park Cemetery, Troy, Oakland Co. Michigan. There is a transcript of an obit too. She lived to be 104. The transcript says her husband died in 1957.

The Peter MacKenzie who arrived in 1929 could be this person in 1930. He is a boarder.
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/X7SZ-5FK
Familysearch has a 1940 census record for a Peter Mackenzie, born in 1899 Scotland. He is an Assistant Manager (like in the border crossing document). He is married to Hilda and they have a daughter. You can see the image of the 1940 census on the familysearch site. I won't post the daughter's name here because she was born about 1925 and may still be living. I wonder if this is your Peter and his family?

Katie was born about 1890.
Bella was born about 1892.
Mary Ellen was born about 1895.
Alexina was born about 1900.
Rodina was born about 1901.
According to the 1901 census, they were all born in the Parish of Lochbroom, Ross-Shire.

I have downloaded the birth certificate for Alexander-Gunn-Hay-Goodwillie.
It shows that he was born on 09 May 1890, in 11 South Guildry Street, Elgin.
His parents were William Hay-Goodwillie and Fanny Goodwillie, nee Gunn. They were married on 06 October 1882 in Detroit, Michigan.
I cannot find any marriage record for a Mary Ellen Mackenzie to a Alexander-Gunn-Hay-Goodwillie anywhere in Scotland.
Strange?
-
Alexander Goodwillie is on the 1891 and 1901 Scottish census with his parents. Two older brothers were born in the U.S. and 3 year old Robert (1891 census) was born in Scotland as was Alexander. Ellis Island has the image of the families return to the U.S. in 1906 at the port of New York. Alexander is shown as Alick.
Since the family returned to the U.S. and Alex only married when he was 35 and Mary Ellen emigrated in 1914 the marriage record is most likely in Michigan. I can't see Alex in the 1920 US census.
Have you checked out the FindAGrave site for Mary Ellen's tombstone? RunKitty found a great resource for you as it gives details of Mary Ellen's family and a wonderful photo of her mother. Rhodina seems to have used Rhoda and Alexina became Enid.

I certainly have checked out the FindAGrave web site and have had a really good afternoon looking through it at the various family members with their obituaries and photographs.
What a shame I hadn't started researching this particular branch of my Mackenzie family before, as two years ago when I was in Ullapool, I actually wandered through the West Argyle Street Cemetery.
