Hi Mel

Try this site and e-mail them with your request, nothing ventured, nothing gained.

There are two possible names for his wife, Elizabeth Armitage or Eliza Ann Fowler, I would go for Armitage.

According to Yorkshire BMD the marriage is between William MARTIN and Elizabeth A PRIDDY, Free BMD has Elizabeth's surname as PUDDY.

Should be able to look it up in the Registers sometime for you but can't promise when just at the moment.

Hi

Thanks for the replys. Have been on to the link but been told to try Borthwick Centre.  This is in York and too far for me to travel  ;)

Pinetree, yes looks as though he did marry Elizabeth Puddy ( according to war records). Would appreciate a look up whenever.

Regards

Mel

Managed to check the register for you:

23 December 1884

William MARTIN: 36, bach, Occ: ?? Major, of Brompton, Kent, Father: Samuel MARTIN, Bricklayer
Elizabeth Annie PUDDY: 22, spin, -, of Fulford, Father: William PUDDY, Labourer

Marriage by banns, both signed, witnesses James MARTIN and Emily Ann BRISTOW.

Sorry the writing was difficult to read and I just couldn't make out William's occupation - I hope this wasn't the key bit of information you were looking for  :-\

Hi Pinetree

Just seen your reply. Many thanks for the look up. William was a serjeant major in Brompton.

Another piece of the puzzle solved.
