I am Brian from the states, trying to research my Ancestors and family in England. I am looking here in Yorkshire for information on my gg grandmother Annie B. Clark(e)'s mother and her mother's family Amelia Ann "Annie" Sherwood and her folks.
Although on most Census records Annie and other Sherwoods gave "Hull, Yorkshire" as place of birth, it was NOT always consistent, therefore when I search at BMD site I got this record which seems to be closest match. How would one go about getting this actual record or a copy of it at least? Would love to see if the parents of Amelia Ann Sherwood are who I suspect they may be.
this is the info. I have on the records location:
Amelia Ann Sherwood
Oct-Nov-Dec 1842
Sculcoates
Volume:22
Page:491
Any help or information or contact with others researching this family would very much be appreciated!
cheers,
Brian

Hi and welcome
www.yorkshirebmd.org.uk shows the birth was registered in the sub district of Sutton in Hull if that helps at all
-
Do you believe her parents to be Richard and Sarah?
Did she marry Frederick Clark in 1865
Ignore next bit - different Fred & Amelia
Edit - Frederick & Amelia in Stepney in 1871 - Amelia shown as b Malta
-
If it helps - I was born in Sculcoates, which is definitely a part of the city of Hull (full name Kingston Upon Hull)
.
Here's a description of the parish of Sculcoates some twenty years before your ancestor was born. http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/YKS/ERY/Sculcoates/index.html

THANK YOU all (Ya'll) for your help and valuable info.!
She INDEED married Fred Clark(e), their eldest child, daughter was born in London (i have her record) Annie B. Clark(e) my gg grandmother.
And YES, I do believe that Richard and Sarah (possibly Wray) were her parents!
It's great to also finally know that "Sculcoates" is actually part of or in Hull. wow. I love learning new things. :)
cheers

This is what I found at FreeBMD site for possible marriage record(s) for Richard Sherwood, but what I find strange is that none of these are in the same "Volume" yet are in same district of HULL and same Year Jun 1841 (which is right time) and all on same Page. I may not be correct on how records are kept and which if all (possible marriage to both women due to death?) or maybe more than one Richard Sherwood at that time in Hull?
One reason I believe maybe Richard was married at a "Wray/Ray" is that when Annie went to live in America on family she lived with was Henry Vincent and his wife Anna Wray.
Marriage June 1841
Wray, Sarah, District: Hull, Vol. 20 Page 266
Sherwood, Richard, District: Hull, Vol 22, Page 266
Smith, Sarah, District: Hull, Vol. 25, Page 266

This is Amelia Ann "Annie" Sherwood's brother:

Thank you very much CaroleW. Wow, I so appreciate the help and kindness!
Now my Sarah Wray/Ray theory and connection to that family has just been blown apart! :)
I have that Richard Sherwood was born 24 Jul 1817 inBilton With Harrogate, Yorkshire, England
with father being William but have clue who his mother was or where this record would be, do they have records this early online to view or at GRO offices or do I need to look at the church records this early?
-
The 1861 census shows his birthplace as Harrogate but there are no online baptismal records to confirm his parentage.
He and Sarah were married by the time of the 1841 census so no joy there
His 1851 age was 32 and 1861 = 42 giving a birthyear 1818/19

Just found him in Kent in 1871 - aged 50 b Harrogate

When trying to trace family and why/how they moved about the country it's useful to enter GENUKI and the town name into your browser to see the possible connections. For instance the Harrogate page shows it is a Spa town (with curative waters) and belongs to the church parish of Knaresborough a couple of miles away. The Knaresborough page shows links to a few trade directories plus the churches in Harrogate and also it lists the main produce of the area is growing flax to make linen cloth, but importantly it's on the River Nidd which flows down to the River Humber Estuary and coincidentally the town of Hull is also on the River Humber. travel by barge, boat and ships was the means by which people travelled most easily and from the big rich port of Hull you could end up in London, or Kent or anywhere across the world. Fairs were important because not only did they bring traders to sell their wares they were also job markets. For example when ports started to thrive stonemasons were required to build houses for the newly rich merchants and you'll find masons were brought from all parts of the UK.

Given he says he was 50 in 1871 - this could well be his baptism from the IGI
