At the suggestion of a replier to that I'm trying a further request on this board.
The trial of the convict in question, Henry Pickett, was at the Essex Assizes at Chelmsford in July 1801, and then he was said to be a 'soldier' and 'late of the parish of St James...and of this county". I'm hoping to find his origins, age, marriage details, and military if any.
1. Is this parish a civil one or religious as well?
2. Where was this parish geographically in 1801?
3. I have a possible baptism of a child of this convict at St James, Westminster, Middlesex in Oct 1801. Would this fit with him being in the St James parish, Essex? I know the counties are different.
What I have on him so far is here:

Any other thoughts or directions of research would be appreciated.
Regards and thanks,

Hi
Trying to help with #3, the baptism in 1801, do you have a name and actual date as there's nothing obvious showing up in the register for that month.

FindMyPast has this baptism as Henry Picker s/o Henry & Mary, although the page is very hard to read, to me it is Henry Weber, definitely not Picker/Pickett. Sorry!

Hi Jo
I don't know what image you are looking at but the entry that has been transcribed by Westminster Archives for FindMyPast doesn't appear at either the bottom of the first column left hand page or top of the 2nd column right hand page.
The page has been cropped or covered by a ruler and the actual entry is missing.
There is a corresponding entry in the IGI for Henry Picket with the same dates which would have been transcribed at some point from the same register.
Referring back to Henry Pickett's trial, I wonder if there is a more full article in a different local newspaper?

Thank you all for your ideas. I do believe the baptism is from IGI. Still not sure of its substantiation yet. I have some updates on the other posting which may help me further.

I don't think the dates of his crime, appearing at the assizes and going to jail before transportation with a wife & childs baptism later in the year all belong to the same Henry Pickett snr, the maths is a bit skewed, although Mary was supposed to have been baptised at St Martin in the Fields, an adjacent Westminster parish. Do you know when they married?
If this is the same Henry Picket jnr baptised 1801, he would have been conceived, just weeks before all these goings on.

Just a few thoughts for possible further research. St James could be Chignal St James.

A newspaper of the time described all of these men as soldiers 'quartered at Colchester'.
Hampshire Chronicle - Monday 03 August 1801

Hi,
I suspect there could be quite a few churches named St James in Essex and other counties so possibly quite a few Parishes of St James although I haven't checked that statement out but I know there is one in Colchester at least.

Mind you with the assizes in Chelmsford, Chignal St James looks a likely candidate.

Made a correction and pressed Quote instead of Modify, I think, not sure how I did it but it was easy der! ::)
