I understand that in the 1831 census Hackney recorded names, occupations, and other household members. If anyone has access to this census for High Hill Ferry, I would appreciate a look up of John and Esther Langston/Langsdon/Langsden and the offspring, please, including all information about them that is included in the census.
With thanks in advance.

Do you mean 1841 census ? , as there's no 1831 census on line
-
I do mean 1831 census. It may not be online but it exists, Mostly in was just enumeration but I understand Hackney didn't follow instructions and actually recorded names, occupations and household members. There were also other census records taken prior to 1831 (1801, 1811, 1821 I think but without names).

Ah OK , I've found them on 1841, but wouldn't know where to look for the Hackney 1831
-
According to this you will find them at the Hackney Archives
http://www.hackney.gov.uk/c-archives-comprehensive-page4.htm
(There may also be copies at the National Archives if you search their site)

The nearest I could get for the name and area -
Henry Langford Upper Clapton Road no.occ listed.
None of the names you have requested.

You used to be able to buy the 1831 Hackney on disc from East of London FHS, should still sell it.

Thanks to those who have provided information re the 1831 census of Hackney. If anyone has the CD or any copy of the census, I would appreciate a lookup of the names requested for High Hill Ferry. If no one has easy access to the information then I will have to approach Hackney Archives and/or EoLFHS.

Hi, I have the Disc and it is not set out in street order like other census, it is alphabetical name order.
I have looked under the names you have asked for but they are not listed.

Your effort much appreciated, Jennifer. Most peculiar as I have the family members with baptism records showing High Hill Ferry, Clapton Common, St Thomas from about 1830 to 1840 when they moved to Lea's/Lee's Brick Field and are shown as such in the 1841 census. Perhaps the names have been mistranscribed in the 1831 census (in a later census the 'L' has been transcribed as 'S') and has also been shown with the variants as mentioned in the subject line. Am not sure where to go from here; any suggestions welcolme.

I don't know how many years I have had that disc, just looked again and found a street indexed part!!!!!!!
Looked at High Ferry Clapton names were-
Rayner
Wakenden
Lynch
Watts
Bennett
Wilson
Becket
Bailey
Marshall
Booth all had the same ref. and an ag.labourer so wonder if it was a farm?

Again, thanks for your time and effort, Jennifer. I am now completely flummoxed as Clapton Common, High Hill Ferry, St Thomas are all mentioned in baptism records and the parents would be John and Esther Langston/Langsdon/Langsden. I wonder where they had gone in 1831 (rhetorical, that).

Hi
Only seems to be heads of householders who were recorded though the occupations in the household were also noted. If not a head of household John wouldn't appear and the rest of his family certainly wouldn't be named merely counted.

Thanks Valda. Some 750 parishes pre-1841 have names recorded. Gibson Guide which lists them all - "Local Census Listings 1522-1930: Holdings in the British Isles" by Jeremy Gibson and Mervyn
Medlycott. As well as the surviving returns from 1801-1831, this booklet lists other unofficial censuses such as ecclesiastical censuses, incumbents' visiting books and Easter books and
communicants' lists. It is available, like the Marriage and Census Indexes book, from the
FFHS at:- www.familyhistorybooks.co.uk
As it seems my Langston/Langsdon/Langsden were not recorded at High Hill Ferry, could someone please also check Upper Clapton and Clapton Common for them?

Hi
Further information on the 1831 Hackney census
http://www.rootschat.com/links/0snt/
The information detailed from that source states it only includes the names of heads of households.
The Rootschat guide to censuses at the top of the London and Middlesex boards gives a link to the main source/list for all early surviving censuses in England. Each census is given a type to show what information it contains such as 'I' to indicate individuals are named and 'H' to indicate only lists of householders. The 1831 Hackney census is listed as type H.

I have not read through all this - so sorry for jumping in without researching - this website came up in a search for other things.
I have a general curiosity in the High Hill Ferry area and have had some discussions elsewhere.
I am posting this link so that others can jopin in and share info and perhaps gain some if they wish.
There are some interesting images and I suspect that it is an ancient root from central London to what is now North East London and such places as Walthamstow and Leyton - across the marshes
It is just supposition but I also suspect it is a place of resort for Londoners long ago.
