Title: Approximate dates required for photograph
Post by: jimr on Monday 14 January 13 14:07 GMT (UK)
I wonder if anyone can help me with an approximate date for this photograph, sent to me by a friend in the USA. The only information that I have on it is that the lady on the left is Agnes Proctor Blackhall b abt 1860 and the lady next to her is her daughter Evelyn b abt 1892.
Agnes died in 1949 but I am thinking from the clothing and the formality of the photograph that this was taken much earlier. I'm sorry that I can't supply more details

I think the lady on the far left looks about 80, and her daughter late 40's/50 so that would put the picture in 1940's.

I think the clothing will match that sort of date, too - the daughter's skirt looks roughly knee length as far as can be seen - but the daters will give their opinion.

I note that the man in the back centre has a pin in his collar.

Ivan
Thanks for that, I thought perhaps the photo was earlier and my friend had mis-identified the oldest lady. She has been in touch with a daughter of the small boy, at least a daughter of who I think he is, and she doesn't recognise anyone, there again she wasn't born until 1967, and the young boy, if I am correct, died in September 2012. Just 5 months too late with this.

I'll see if anyone else comes up with ideas and maybe try to find some other living descendants

I would put it in the late 30s or into the 40s, which would make the ladies' ages about right :)

Skirt!  :o It's The Kilt, Sassenach!  ;D   OK, probably not an authentic one, but nevertheless the length is about right for a kilt.  The lad is wearing one too  :)

It's definitely back to the drawing board, I reckon the children are about 5-7 years old, the boy I am guessing it is was b abt 1939 and the girl abt 1941 Which would make it post 1945

Oh well thinking cap on again

Well, that's me told!  :-[ ;D
Sorry about that.

Your eyes are better than mine - I can't see the younger lady's skirt at all!

It was just being called a Sassenach, Prue  :o

Whilst I'm afraid I am one  :), I hate to be found knowingly ignorant about the cultures of others  ;)

I apologise, IS - it was my fault for misreading your post.  I should have known you knew what you were talking about! I'm a mixed-breed myself, including Scots, English and Irish, so I shouldn't throw stones  ;)

Now, back to the pic...I'm fairly certain that the younger lady's and the girl's hairstyles are typical of the late 30s or very early 40s, not sure it would be as late as post-1945 but I'm happy to be proven incorrect.
