Title: Terry Family - British Columbia
Post by: bkr188 on Monday 14 January 13 02:39 GMT (UK)
Hello,
I am researching the family of Arthur and Harriet Elizabeth Terry who immigrated from England, arriving in Montreal 1907.  They moved to British Columbia and died in Victoria BC.  I have their death certificates and an article from the Westcoast Logger written in 1991 about their son, Arthur Norman Terry, plus the Find a Grave information on Arthur Norman Terry and his wife Ann Alicia Terry.
BC Archives have a Arthur Norman Terry married to Lucy Hazel Gibson in 1934.  My questions.  Is this the same Arthur Norman Terry with two marriages?  Did Arthur Norman have any children or siblings?  Any help much appreciated.

I found Arthur Norman and his wife on the Canada Voters List for Vancouver South 1954 He and his wife are living in Olympic Street and next to his name it says BC. Service (forest).
The bad news is that his wife is down as Mrs Arthur Norman Terry!!

Living in the same street is a Harry J C Terry manager steamships and his wife Mrs Francis Terry.
A possible son?

Harriet died in 1932? Could it be Arthur senior marrying Hazel Gibson (Not Lucy on the record) in 1834 although the groom is listed as Arthur Norman. I can't see a death for a Hazel or Lucy Gibson but there is this
Anne Alicia Terry
Birth Year - abt 1902
Age at death 83
Died 2 May 1985
Death Location - University Endowment
Registration number: 1985-09-008093

I am hoping to get to the family history society library to do some BMD lookups this week.  I can check the marriage registration for Arthur Norman Terry and Lucy Hazel Gibson if you like.

The article referred to in the first post.  It mentions Arthur meeting his wife, Anne Alicia Crawford, and their eventual marriage 11 years later but there is no mention of a first wife.

There was a Norman Terry married to a Lucy on the voters lists - his job was accountant.

Hi

The Harry J.C. Terry who was married to Frances was born in Australia and is the son of Henry Terry and Clara Campbell.

Hopefully this link will take you to a copy of their marriage registration

Is your Arthur from Australia by any chance?

Hi - not sure if you cleared up whether your Arthur Norman Terry had two marriages or not.

I checked through some of the Vancouver City Directories that are available to search online in the Genealogy Section of the Vancouver Public Library.

http://www.vpl.ca/bccd/index.php/browse/index

There are 2 Arthur N Terry's listed in the 1944 city directory.
- A. Norman (Anne) log scaler BC Govt 5762 Olympic and
- Arth N (Lucille) hlpr WCS 5556 Joyce.

The second Arthur N Terry lived for most of the 1930's with Ada (widowed/possibly his mother) and Robt M Terry at 1647 E 41st Ave. Lucy H appears with him in 1935.

Hope that helps.

Hello,
Thank you all for your information.  Am always amazed at the great info. through Rootschat.  Arthur Terry (father of Arthur Norman Terry) was actually born in Woodchurch Kent, and died in Victoria British Columbia March 4 1964 aged 91 years as per death certificate.  The certificate also gives his only wife as Harriet Elizabeth nee Bishop who died 1932.
Arthur Norman died in 1994 aged 90 years. and is buried in the same plot as Anne Alicia Terry.  As per the Westcoast Logger article he was a timberman.  It is interesting to get the voter list information, thank you. As I write this another post has come in which makes it feasible there are two Arthur Norman Terry's.
When a cousin found the marriage information of an Arthur Norman Terry to Lucy Hazel Gibson we wondered if it was a 1st marriage gone wrong.  The dates fit to him being in Vancouver at the time.  The marriage listing is Date 1934.04/07 Event Place Vancouver; Registration No. 1934-09-415423 B.C. Archives Mfilm No.B13767 - GSU Mfilm No 2135986 Event Type Marriage.  To date I have not been able to access the actual marriage certificate.  He was born in Ware Hertfordshire England in the 1st qtr of 1904; his parents were Arthur Terry, an accountant and his mother Harriet Elizabeth Terry nee Bishop.  Thank you for all your help. I really appreciate such and hope I may be able to contribute to someones information in future.
Cheers

Thank you Susan.  Your help has been invaluable.  Have taken the lead of sami and looked at the 1944 city directory which shows the 2 AN Terry's and their wives as Anne and Lucille.  Would be wonderful to get absolute verification.
Cheers

No additional information on the marriage(s?) happening, but this is a short blurb on the life and that he appears to mostly go by Norman....

Norman Terry - Forester (http://news.google.com/newspapers?id=c2hkAAAAIBAJ&sjid=onwNAAAAIBAJ&pg=5060,2760726&dq=norman-terry&hl=en)

There are many possibilities in the early directories, and the marriage registration may clear things up or muddle them further!

Thank you cccarson,
Yes, you have just reminded me he did seem to prefer being Norman, as per the article from Westcoast Logger.  Might have been something to distinguish him from his father who was also Arthur, without a second name.  I looked up some of the voter lists and have concluded he was only married once and Lucille was married to another Arthur Norman Terry, also living in Vancouver.  It also seems he did not have children.  From the newspaper articles it sounds he was well respected and made a large contribution to the BC forestry industry.  Thank you for the article - much appreciated.  The information from everyone has been wonderful and I now have a concluded picture of ANT.
