Title: Broughton family of Lancashire
Post by: Will4406 on Sunday 13 January 13 08:46 GMT (UK)
i was wondering if maybe i could get a little guidance of where to go from here as i have hit a wall.

I have been able to find my family back to my 2nd great grandfather John Broughton (born 1859 in England) who married (feb 15 1880 Habergham Eaves, Lancashire, England at the Church of the Holy Trinity) Mary Ellen Kelly (born 1861 England). They had 3 children (George born 1883 England, Frederick born 1892 Burnley Lancashire England, and Herbert Born 1897 Burnley Lancashire England).
I have a scan of the 1916 Calgary Alberta Census to Confirm and it also shows that George emigrated with his wife Winnie in 1907 and everyone else came in 1909.
I Believe John's father was named George and Mary Ellen's Father is named John (thru marriage info) but i have been unable to figure out how to find out any other info nor how to proceed. i have 0 money i can spend (makes this especially tough) but i could really use a guiding hand.

I hope i posted this properly and i appreciate any and all help. Maybe the tree will help tie in someone else's loose ends too!

and this looks like it could be John Broughton in 1871: https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/KDXQ-694

John Kelly was a photographer

John Kelly was a photographer

That looks right as the marriage cert. confirms that John Kelly was a photographer and George Broughton was a Spinner.

In the 1861 census, John Kelly is away from home at the Show Ground in Todmorden - he's on a schedule of "persons not in houses".

His family are in Blackpool (Clifton Street - number 17 or thereabouts):

Mary Kelly 27 - Photographer's Wife, Huddersfield
Mary   Kelly     5  - March, Cambridgeshire
James Kelly 4 - Blackpool,
Catherine Kelly 1   - Blackpool
Elizabeth Smith 12 Servant - Bradford, Yorkshire

Per Lancs BMD it looks like Mary Kelly's maiden name was McKey or McKay. There's a possible marriage in Preston in 1854: John Kelly/ Mary MacKay (Preston Register Office or Registrar Attended).

There's an interesting item in The Era for 26 September 1875:

"Married, at Glasgow,on the 20th inst, William Campbell, the Scottish Giant, to Polly, daughter of Mr John Kelly, photographer,Burnley, Lancashire"

There's an ad in The Era for July 9th 1876 (page 14):

WILLIE CAMPBELL, the Scottish Giant, has met with an enthusiastic reception in the Channel Islands where he has shown to upwards of 30,000 persons. Now creating a tremendous furore in CHERBOURG in FRANCE. Would like to hear from Charles Jameson. Also John and James Kelly, photographer.......

address Messrs NORMAN and CAMPBELL, Post-Office, Cherbourg, France

how did you figure out thats the right Mary?  I only ask because i can't find any records that link "Mary Kelly" to specifically "Mary McKey/Mckay/Mackay" vs any number of "Mary so and so's" that John could have married. ( I'm still fairly new (less than 1 year) to genealogy and i'm still learning the process of elimination game)

Thanks!

Have you looked for the birth registrations of the children on Lancs BMD? You will see that the mother's maiden name is shown

I am responding to this post because John Kelly is in my family tree (and David Chappell's).  William Campbell (24) married Mary Kelly (20) at 33 Connely Park Street, Glasgow, which was also their home address.  William is a ? - Pressman.  William's father is also William Campbell who was a Victualler.  William's mother is Marion Campbell (formerly Barron).  Mary Kelly's father is John Kelly who was a photographer.  Her mother is also Mary Kelly (formerly MacKay).

Hope you find this useful.
