Robert Beattie is buried in the cemetery at Lochmaben. His headstone reveals that he died 26th June 1851 aged 81 years. He married Janet Chalmers at Lochmaben on 16th August 1811. They are my 3 greats Grandparents.
In 1795 Robert had married firstly Mary Graham also at Lochmaben. (The OPR states that they married clandestinely. What does this imply, please?). Based on his calculated year of birth he was 15 or 16 at the time. So much I know.
In 1917 my great uncle (Robert's great grandson) went to Watcarrick in Eskdalemuir and around to find information about his forebears and apart from some photographs some information was written down including details about William Beattie and Ann Scott of Watcarrick taken from their headstone. and he noted 'Robert Beattie was born there'.
After many, many years I cannot find a positive record for Robert's birth/baptism that links him to Eskdale but - - -maybe somewhere else.
Can anyone help please?

Hi Reiver
Regarding a clandistine marriage, see www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,629742.msg4777123.html#msg4777123

Hi Monica
Many thanks for the information about clandestine marriages. It was superb.
Can I take it further please?
First of all I made an error in ascribing the marriage to Robert Beattie - just in case I've confused somebody else. It actually concerned a marriage in 1775 in Canonbie. However two days later there was another one designated the same 'were married clandestinely'. If though there was the likelihood of extreme consequences why would the minister carry out the marriage and secondly why publish that he had done such a thing.
Could money or power be talking? ;D ;D

More than likely both ::)
A check of the Kirk Sessions might reveal more, but not sure if this is practical for you to do...

Thanks Monica for the suggestion. That could go some way to solving my mystery but I think it will have to go on the back-burner.

Hi Reiver,
Were you after information on William Beattie and Ann Scott plus their offspring?
-
Hi Briellin
I am pretty positive I have all the information I need - and more - about William Beattie and Ann Scott. I have been acquiring it for a long time with the main reason to try and establish a recordable link with Robert Beattie. But I haven't yet found it. All I have is what my father's uncle wrote some 100 years ago which is the basis really for this topic.
But if you can help in any way with this I would be highly delighted. :) :)

I am trying to find Robert in the 1851 Census. After various options on ScottishPeople I wonder if he is in an institution/hospital somewhere where he may be recorded only by his initials. How does one search for the initials RB via SP please?

Hi Reiver,
I spent hours going through my Beattie info and SP and other sites looking for info on Robert Beattie. I did find a few things, though nothing groundbreaking. I just have to find the file I put it all in as I got sidetracked looking for Scotts and it is mixed in with that. I saved all I found whether it seemed relevant or not so you can sort through it.
I have a friend who has worked on the Beattie line for the last 25 years. She is in the middle of moving house but once she is settled in I will ask her for any info she might have.
In an old book I was doing research in I came across the term of clandestine marriages. In those days they were titled as "Green Marriages" - hence Gretna Green.
Kind regards,
Briellen

This I found on Janet Chalmers :
Janet Chalmers, b. 26 Oct 1769 , chr. 5 Nov 1769 in Ratho, Midlothian
Parents Thomas Chalmers and Isabel Aitken
I also found a few Mary Graham's attached to Lochmaben, plus the birth of 2 children William and Chatrin (female) to both Robert and Mary.

Thanks Briellin.
I look forward to hearing what you have found about the earlier Beatties. As I've said I have done a fair bit myself so I maybe able to help you and your contacts.
Thanks also for Robert's entry in the 1841 Census. As far as age is concerned this more or less tallies with his age at death in 1851. He died in June 1851 after the 1851 Census - end of March 1851 -was taken. But I have not been able to find him. Hence my query about how to find someone on the census if initials only were recorded.

I read your information on Robert Beattie 1769 - 1851 with interest as I am trying to trace what happened to William Beattie, the son born to Mary Graham on 12th March 1799. Do you have any information on him - whether he died before 1824 or married in Scotland. My 2xgt grandfather was born in Dumfriesshire about this time and I have researched most of the William Beatties born in the 1790's without much certainty. My William Beattie was a tea dealer, married in Shropshire in 1824 and died in Welshpool in 1874. His eldest grandson was called Robert Beattie. I have traced
Robert Beattie's family back from Lochmaben to Westerkirk. What happened to Mary Graham ?
Best wishes

How absolutely marvellous :) :) :) :)
I do know that Robert married Mary Graham before he married my direct ancestor Janet Porteous in 1811. Assuming that Robert and Janet's marriage was not bigamous I looked for a death / burial of a Mary Beattie and found one in the OPR in the parish of Langholm / Stapelgorton on 28th April 1809. I cannot find a headstone inscription for her, however.
My interest in Robert is pretty well set out from the start of this series of posts.
Robert and Janet's son - my gg grandfather - was named Benjamin (an interesting choice of name). However his son, my g gf, and his son, my gf, and his son my father were all William :)
Not me, however :) :)
You say you can link Robert to Eskdale. That would be interesting to say the least :)

Hello Neil, I have received a tree, which you probably have (because you are on it as the Blackburn branch ) WALTER Beattie b. 1679 m Marion Black d. Craig 1752. Children John d.1866 Watcarrick Elizabeth born 1736 d. 1804. WILLIAMb. 1724 m. 1767 Anne Scott d. 1800 Fingland. Children Walter d. 1769 Watcarrick Andrew d. 1860 Margaret b. 1770.d. 1782 ROBERT b. 1770 Watcarrick m. Mary Graham 1795(d. 1810). d. 1851. Children:Chatrin b. 1796; WILLIAM 1799 d. ? ;WILLIAM 1803 d. 1860 ? Ann b. 1805; Barbara b & D. 1810 . Robert married (2) Janet Chalmers 1811 daughter of William Chalmers (miller) and Elizabeth Farish Son Benjamin b. 1812 -1894 m. Janet Mcnairn 1849( 1824-1884) One of his sons was William Chalmers 1853- 1896 m,. Janet Porteus 1875 (1851-1885 ) I have some Porteus marrying Beatties but Janet doesn't feature in it. Anyway William 1799 is out of the picture !!

Thanks Briellin for the tree information. It is something I am aware of however. I am reluctant to accept it in total. Is it a tree from Ancestry? is a name given?
Really, until I can find a positive date of birth/baptism for Robert i would rather not accept the tree beyond him. As I said earlier William Beattie and his wife Ann Scott are buried at Watcarrick Burial ground as are his parents Walter Beattie and Marion Black. So also are some of William and Ann's children. I may have information to take it further back from Walter.
One of these was 'baby' Walter who died in February 1769 only months old. Say born 1n 1768. Robert based on his age (1841 census - 72) and his death (Lochmaben cemetery - June 1851 age 81) was born seemingly 1768 - 1780. Is it practical for Robert to fit in after Walter???
I do have information on the Scotts in Eskdale / Ewesdale. I suggest using a PM if you think I can help.
