Hi Folks
I am interested to know which parish Kings Worthy and Abbots Worthy would have been before 1750 in particular between 1650 and 1715.
Any help would be very much appreciated.

Richard

Hi Richard
The following link may help. Loads of info there.

Hi ccrail
Thanks for your reply. This site is interesting but it doesn't clarify issues of parish records as the church in the parish seems to have been mainly around since the mid 1800's.

Hi Richard
The text for St Mary's appears to say that it has parts of the church dating back to the 1500's and a check of Phillimores registers states the following:
Four of these Registers commence in the sixteenth century,
one, that of Kingsworthy, dating back to the earliest period,
viz., 1538.
So I guess that for Kingsworthy at least it has existed in Parish terms since then.
Not sure about Abbotsworthy, i'll have a look and see.

Kings Worthy parish records date from 1538 (marriages and burials) 1541 (baptisms).
Abbots Worthy was a tithing within the parish of Kings Worthy, so in the 17th and 18th centuries, you would need to look in Kings Worthy records.
Would you like to share the names of who you are looking for?

Hi Little Nell and Ccrail
Thanks for your replies. I am looking for a record of marriage of my 5th great grandfather Robert Garrett and his wife Mary and his birth which may also have been in Kingsworthy / Abbots Worthy area.
Robert was I believe born in 1669 as indicated by his burial record which (according to the Hampshire Genealogical Society Burial Index) says he was 74 when buried in Kingsworthy on 14 Sep 1743. His wife was also buried in Kingsworthy (I am not sure what age) on 28 Feb 1742. Their son John (my 4th great grand father was buried (according to HGS) age 83 in Kingsworthy on 19 Nov 1788.
I am also interested to find parish baptism records for Robert and Mary's children including John Garrett and his siblings.
Do you know if the Kingsworthy area church records can be viewed online?

Hi Richard
I have a transcript of Philimores that covers Kingsworthy (and from what Little Nell says) Abbotsworthy as well and there is no marriage for a Robert Garrett (or any variation of spelling) at or around those dates. Indeed the transcript covers other parish's as below and it's not in any of them either. There are other Garrett's in this transcript, some male and some female of various dates from early 1600's through to 1800's.
The other parish's are:
Winchester College, Weyhill, Hannington, Crawley, Kingsworthy, Nateley Scures, Rotherwick, Bentworth, Boldre.
It may be that the marriage was in a parish close to Kingsworthy and on another vol of Philimores?

Ho Ccrail
Thanks for your reply. Looks like I will have to widen my scope for potential places of marriage for Robert Garrett and Mary outside of the Kingsworthy area.

As far as I know, Kings Worthy records for this sort of date are not available online.
I too am struggling to find a marriage for Robert & Mary anywhere in Hampshire :(
I have found the following baptism records in a register transcript that I have:
Elizabeth bapt 26 Mar 1699,
Thomas bpt 18 Feb 1702/3
John bapt 1 Mar 1704.5
Sarah bpt 14 Nov 1707
Robert bpt 26 Dec 1713
all in Kings Worthy. Robert is recorded as living in Abbots Worthy.
I did find a baptism in 1669 for a Robert Garrat - in Andover, which a few parishes away.
Robert son of Robert (!) bpt 26 Aug 1669
If Robert & Mary married in a parish other than Kings Worthy, it might be difficult to trace if the records for that parish do not survive at that date :(
I have checked the Winchester diocese Marriage allegations which begin in 1683, without luck.

Hi Nell
Thanks for checking the Kings Worthy parish records. Andover looks promising. I will have to widen my search for Robert's marriage to Mary possibly out of the county maybe Wiltshire.
Best wishes

Hi Richard,
I am also researching a family from Abbots Worthy and came across this group online: The Worthy's local History Group who appear to have some records of "Garretts" in the area. I don't know if you have already seen this group but here is the link:
http://www.communigate.co.uk/hants/worthyslocalhistorygroup/page10.phtml
I am going to Hampshire Records Office in the near future so if you need me to look in the Andover records for a marriage please let me know.
Best regards

Hi Lainey
Thanks for your message. Sorry I didn't get back to you before now. I am rather stuck with my 5th Great grandfather Robert Garrett (1669 - 1743). I am not sure where he was born but possibly in Hampshire and in the Worthys area or possibly Andover. I believe his wife's name was Mary but do not know her maiden name.
Thanks for the link to the Worthys group which I will contact for further advice.
Best wishes
Richard
