My ancestor - David Colwell married Elizabeth Bleasdale
28 May 1865 at St John, Preston, Lancashire, England
David Callwell - (X), 21 Labourer Bachelor of Mount Pleasant
Elizabeth Bleasdale - (X), 19 Spinner Spinster of Atkinson St
Groom's Father: Maurice Callwell, Boot Maker
Bride's Father: William Bleasdale, Labourer
Witness: Henry Davis, (X); Elizabeth Knowles, (X)
So Elizabeth born abt 1846. The 1871 census agrees and puts her place of birth as Preston. David died 1873 and Elizabeth died 1875 aged 28 so born abt 1847. I have a newspaper article from 1874 which possibly/probably relates to her but doesn't tell us anything useful.
And that's all I have for her. I've have eliminated everyone trying to find any other record about her. She's my last dead end where I would have expected to be able to follow further back.
A fresh set of eyes would be appreciated.
-
I suspect this is her baptism.
Baptisms: 3 Sep 1848 St John, Preston, Lancashire, England

Occupation: -
Baptised by: J. Wilson Curate

Hi Mo.
Unfortunately I've already ruled her out. She was my last hope. ;D
These were the three youngest children of Mark Grundy and Margaret Bleasdale. Unless it was bigamous.....and she faked her death.....or there were two of them called Elizabeth....
Marriage: 25 Jan 1868 St Peter, Blackburn, Lancashire, England
Moses Brocklebank - 19 shunterman Bachelor of 36 Thomas St.
Elizabeth Grundy - (X), 20 weaver spinster of 2 Eanam
Groom's Father: John Brocklebank, ostler
Bride's Father: Mark Grundy, weaver
Witness: John Loynds; Margaret Loynds, (X)
Married by Certificate by: W. Hudson
Marriage: 9 Nov 1872 St Mary the Virgin, Blackburn, Lancashire, England
John Grundy - (X), 21 Weaver Bachelor of Trinity St
Ann Jane Whalley - (X), 20 Weaver Spinster of Adelaide St
Groom's Father: Mark Grundy, Weaver
Bride's Father: Jacob Whalley, Porter
Witness: Moses Brocklebank; Alice Grundy
Married by Certificate by: H. G. Youard
Marriage: 16 May 1875 St Luke, Preston, Lancashire, England
James Middleton - 20 Spinner Bachelor of 42 Deepdale Mill St
Alice Grundy - 21 Weaver Spinster of 30 Gillett Street
Groom's Father: Jacob Middleton, deceased, Spinner
Bride's Father: Mark Grundy, deceased, Weaver
Witness: Daniel Caton, (X); Margaret Ann Middleton
Bigamy I can believe - but successfully getting a fake death certificate as well?! Nah. But it's incredibly believable that's the right family. Atkinson st was parallel to crown st.
There's a lot more reason to believe that's the right family - but there's no escaping the double marriage.

Hi,
1861 Census - Preston - 7 Moorbrook St
William Bleasdale 46 (1815) born Blackburn - Bobbin ?? factory
wife Mary 40 (1821) born Ireland, West??? (could be Westport)
Daughter Elizabeth 15 (1846) born Lancaster, Throstle spinner
Daughter Maryann 13 (1848) born Ulverston
Son John 9 (1852) born Lancaster
Boarder Mary Hart 16 (1845) born Ireland
Anc****y have them indexed as BLEASDLE and FindMyPast have them indexed as BLUNDELL
Blundell is definitely wrong, when you look at the census page it does read BLEASDLE.
Also, Henry Davis who was one of the witnesses at the marriage of Elizabeth Bleasdale, if he is the same one in my tree was a Bobbin Turner and originated from the Garstang/Catterall area, not a million miles from Lancaster?
Henry Davis also married an Irish lady so a possible connection with William`s wife?
Hope this helps or not as the case may be!!
-
Thanks for looking Radcliff. That family in chipping had me going for a while as well at one point.
Barney, that one is a bit of a cat amongst the pigeons. I haven't seen that family before! I'll have a look into them.
-
Hi,
Further to the 1861 Census family I listed above, I have now found a marriage for John Bleasdale in 1877.
29th Oct 1877 St. George, Preston
John Bleasdale - Blacksmith aged 25 of 21 Mount Pleasant, Preston (this is the right age for the John Bleasdale in the 1861 Census i.e. 1852).
father William Bleasdale, cutter.
married
Elizabeth Wearden 22 servant spinster of 6 Mount Pleasant, Preston
father James Wearden, collier.
Witnesses William Blundell and Martha Blundell.
Address of both parties is interesting: Mount Pleasant - this was the address given for
David Callwell at the time of his marriage to Elizabeth Bleasdale in 1865?
Just a thought...
Janet
-
This family are like pulling teeth.
-
I know!!
Forgot to mention that in the marriage of John Bleasdale to Elizabeth Wearden, father William Bleasdale is described as `the late William Bleasdale`.
So, this being the case he must have died between Elizabeth`s marriage to David in 1865 and John`s marriage to Elizabeth in 1877.
The only deaths that come up on Lancs BMD in that time period are a couple of possible ones in Lancaster. I was hoping it might have been Preston.....
Janet
-
The William Bleasdale who died in Lancaster in 1875 was the suicide of the hairdresser born there in 1815 married to an Ann.
So definitely not that one. Which was the likely looking one.
-
That said this is a posibility
Burial: 21 Jun 1867 St Mary, Lancaster, Lancashire, England
William Bleasdale -
Age: 55
Abode: Damside Street
Notes: E. S. [In Margin]
because damside st is only around the corner from bridge lane and castle hill which might make these two of his children. Though where fanny was hiding on the 1861 i don't know.
Marriage: 13 Sep 1866 St Mary, Lancaster, Lancashire, England
David Boid - (X), 21 Bread Baker Bachelor of China Lane
Mary Ann Bleasdale - (X), 19 Spinster of Bridge Lane
Groom's Father: John Boid, Labourer
Bride's Father: William Bleasdale, Labourer
Witness: Bridget Lofthouse, (X); John Beckett
Marriage: 23 Dec 1866 St Mary, Lancaster, Lancashire, England
Joseph Corless - 21 Groom Bachelor of Common Garden Street
Fanny Bleasdale - (X), 19 Spinster of Castle Hill
Groom's Father: James Corless, Ostler
Bride's Father: William Bleasdale, Card Master
Witness: John Hawkin; M. D. Corless; Henry Corless; Sarah Agnes Bradley
-
Snap..I`d just noticed the Mary Ann to David Boid (wonder if that is Boyd?). Father William is a labourer but the other one, marriage of Fanny her Father William is a `card master`, just wondering if that is a bit of a leap from labourer to cardmaster in the space of 3 months between the marriages?
Both Mary Ann and Fanny are 19 as well?
I have found a marriage in 1843 in Crosthwaite, Cumberland of a William Bleasdale and Mary Carrigan,
sounds Irish?
Father of William Bleasdale was John Bleasdale (Williams son was named John).
The 1843 marriage would fit in with the births of the 3 children 1846, 1848 and 1852?
This is beginning to annoy me now!!
Janet
-
I have found a marriage in 1843 in Crosthwaite, Cumberland of a William Bleasdale and Mary Carrigan,
I've been looking for that.
The elizabeth bleasdale born 1846 at lancaster has mother's maiden name of Carragan.
-
I`ve been trying to find the family in 1851, Elizabeth and Mary Ann were both born before that census but just can`t find them anywhere...
Glad you found that marriage anyway.

ES in margin WHAT DOES THIS MEAN
-
Radcliffe,
I have no idea what ES in the margin means, just a guess `Evening Service`? Other than that haven`t a clue, perhaps someone else may know?
Janet
-
I've no idea what ES means either. But on the original (on ancestry) half the page's entries has that ES marked on it so it's probably not significant.
BUT.
you are my hero janet.
This baptism
Baptisms: 19 Sep 1865 St Mary, Lancaster, Lancashire, England
Ellen Colewell - Child of David Colewell & Betty
Born: 31 Jul 1865
Abode: Bridge Lane
Occupation: Labourer
and this birth certificate on lancsbmd.
COALWELL Ellen Lancaster Preston BLEASDALE LAN/33/90
(Colwell spelling variations 9 and 10! to go with - Colwell, Corwell, Calwell, Calwall, Cowell, Coldwell, Caldwell & Cauldwell ) link the families together.
So even if I've no idea where they are in 1841 or 1851. Why the igi has that marriage at crosthwaite, kendal when the GRO index has it in cockermouth or where the brother is in 1871 if he's marrying in preston in 1877 or any other of a few random questions (more to be determined later).
This is the first breakthrough I've had with this nightmare family in quite a long time.
Thank you, thank you, thank you.

ES was the initials of the person that buried him. There is also EP for E Pedder etc.
MO
-
Brilliant! I was beginning to doubt whether this was going to be the right family!
Will just throw this one into the mix, I had a `wander` down Mount Pleasant, Preston in the 1861 Census and found this family:-
James Carrigan age 23 (1838) born Ireland
Wife Betsy age 21 born Ireland
Dg Catherine 3 born Preston
Dg Margaret infant born Preston
and
Dennis Caragan boarder age 18 born Ireland
Mary Caragan boarder age 20 born Ireland
I don`t know whether it`s coincidence or whether they are connected to Mary Bleasdale nee Carragan or not but the Mount Pleasant address figures in the marriages of John Bleasdale in 1877 to Elizabeth Wearden and prior to that David Colwell/Elizabeth Bleasdale in 1865.
Checked again in the 1871 but no sign of them...hmmm!!
Janet
-
Part or all of Piece 4213 for Preston is missing from the 1871 census, so that may be why you can`t find them.
Mo
-
Mo, the way this has been going so far it wouldn`t surprise me if they are in the `missing` bit!
Thanks for the explanation of ES, that clears that one up, many thanks!
Janet
-
I'd say the chance of a connection is a strong possibility. Those Corrigans are on page 45 - my Colwells are on page 44.
-
Catherine Carrigan
birth Preston,Preston
1858
mothers m name Bracken
Elizabeth Bracken marriage
Preston register office or registrar attended
1858,
spouse James Carrigan
-
There doesn`t seem to be anymore births after Margaret mmn Bracken in 1861 so perhaps they went back to Ireland. :-\
Mo
why are the smilies so small?
-
I`ve checked the marriages for St. Wilfreds RC Church for James and Elizabeth but no joy
there.
However, there is a baptism for JOHN CARRIGAN b 20/12/1862 father James Carrigan, mother
Elizabeth Carrigan nee Bracken but no baptisms there for the first 2 children Catherine and Margaret!!

Have just seen posting re suicide of William Bleasdale in Lancaster 1875. This is my wife' s 4x great grandfather and she was totally unaware of this. Can you help with any other details please?
-
Hi,
Re the suicide of William Bleasdale in 1875. If you can access old newspapers there is a report on 8th May, 1875 in the Lancaster Gazette which details what happened to him.
-
Many thanks for the very swift reply. We live near Lancaster and I can easily look this up now in the local history library. Another family mystery about to be solved!
-
Page 8 Second Column. 'SUICIDE AT LANCASTER'
I'd type it but it's fairly long.

Just read your challenge Bleasdale Preston. I was interested in it because I've been searching for a Martha Bleasdale b 1843 Turton but couldn't find her on BMD . Eventually found her as Blazedale.
